Chapter 971: Not ready

"... because I would never have the heart to take away her life support even if she loathes me for it."

Another moment of silence dominated the room while their expressions turned gloomy. Except for Primo, who had no idea what Dominic was talking about for the most part, Dominic maintained a straight and solemn countenance.

’I’ve always thought my wife was easy to understand, but now I’ve understood her deeper,’ Dominic thought, moving his gaze to everyone around the room. ’These people... her people only cared for her. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration that she was the center of their world. I’m still unsure if this is the result of something she worked hard to make them as loyal as dogs, but what I’m sure of is that because of them... because of all of us... she never had the luxury to be selfish.’

It wasn’t like their loyalty was a bad thing, but in a way, it wasn’t entirely healthy.

They cared for Hera to the point that their lack of regard for their lives was concerning. Thus, in her twisted and wounded mind, she made herself believe that since they always thought of her, it was her role to put them in her priorities. It wasn’t like she was selfless, she just had to be one.

Perhaps it was also the reason she hadn’t done anything to Dragon in the past when the man betrayed her.

Dominic wasn’t sure, but if his theory was correct, he believed it was because she was glad Dragon thought of something for himself. Even if he betrayed her, he removed himself from her life to do something else for himself.

’She must be very disappointed to know what Dragon had been doing all along.’Another thought crossed Dominic’s mind, letting out a heavy sigh. ’Instead of pursuing something else, his goal was her.’

"If you understand my argument, then I guess that’s settled." Dominic cleared his throat, breaking the silence that had been reigning in the room. "Pushing me away right now isn’t needed anymore."

"Hah..." Wolf let out a short chuckle, nodding in understanding. "Well, I guess that made sense. Even though our problems are just starting, finding her help is still the most important."

Bear pressed his lips into a thin line, eyes on Dominic. After hearing Wolf, a deep breath escaped him.

"If that’s your plan, then we won’t be forcing you to do anything else," he said. "Though if you had plans in mind, we would reconsider it. More heads are better than a few."

"Whatever." Tiger shrugged, ruffling his hair irritably. "Anyway, what are we talking about again?"

"Joker is now being held hostage," Primo unhesitatingly answered, putting them all back on track. "But the lead we got is that Dragon’s ally got him. Hera Cruel and Dragon were probably with him as well. After all, I saw the people who took them after the accident and someone also had a sun tattoo on his nape."

"Sun..." Moose, who had been quiet and distracted since the start of the meeting, whispered. He snapped his eyes back to everyone, brows raised. "Aren’t they the syndicate where that bishop works for?"

"A bishop?" Primo furrowed his brows, only to turn his head to Wolf as the latter explained.

"It’s a part of the past. To make it short, there was a time in the past when some groups took advantage of our organization’s silence. They kept blaming any big crimes on us for anything that would occur in the underground," Wolf explained, keeping it short but comprehensive. "We didn’t care initially, but when our boss heard about a particular crime, she couldn’t stand it."

"It was human trafficking," Bear added. "And one respected bishop was part of the operation. He would conduct ’charities,’ saying he would help those in need. Obviously, it was just a front. He does those charity causes to find what his clients need."

"They sell organs, huh?" Primo rocked his head in understanding, getting a grasp of what they were saying. "So, this explains why those guys allied with Dragon. An enemy’s enemy is a friend."

"After we meddled with their operation, I heard they stopped this business entirely," Wolf added confidently. "They shifted their interest to other crimes and stayed away from us. At least, until now."

"Hmm." Primo rubbed his chin as he pondered. "What should we do then?"

He snapped his eyes up to them. "Dragon might be injured. If his injuries were bad, he wouldn’t make a move for at least a few days or weeks. But that god-forsaken Dimitri is left unscathed. He might be planning his next move now as we speak."

"I hate to say this." Primo ran his tongue across his inner cheek. "But I feel like we’re cornered. Aside from lacking manpower, our enemies were coming from all directions."

"Dane won’t make his move on us yet," Dominic remarked with certainty. "I know him. He’s meticulous and when it comes to patience, he’s gifted with it a lot. He managed to fool everyone for years, not doing anything aside from the little ’slip-ups’ he would deliberately do."

"Hah..." Primo let out a laugh. "Mr. Zhu, he might’ve been your assistant for many years. But now that you know the man behind that mask, I don’t think there’s a need for him to exercise patience."

"That’s true, but at the same time, Dragon’s alliances were also his enemies," Dominic argued. "Compared to us who are obviously short in numbers, Dragon’s alliance is the biggest threat to him right now."

"Dom is right." Wolf nodded in agreement. "It’s not like you’re wrong, Alexander. But if you look at the entire picture, all participants in this battle also think cornered. Dragon and Dimitri are our enemies, but in Dimitri’s mind, we and Dragon are his enemies. It’s the same for Dragon."

"What I’m saying, it’s just a matter of who would we all go first?" he continued. "Isn’t that why we initially decided to split the group for this mission?"

Another moment of silence befell them until Primo raised a question. "So, what now? Let’s say that’s the case. What should be our plan then?"

"We rest," Dominic answered without a second hesitation, making Primo scrunch up his nose.

"We, what?" Primo scoffed. "Oy, Dominic Zhu."

"I agree with him." This time, Moose chimed in the conversation. "For now, we should rest."

Primo shifted his eyes to Moose, in disbelief at what he was hearing. "Mr. M, why are you..."

"Don’t misunderstand. We rest while we make up a proper plan," Moose explained solemnly. "If this didn’t happen to Heaven, Fig, and Joker, going through the next phase of the plan is ideal. But since things didn’t work in our favor, our already small group is down to six people. Minus Mr. Zhu, it’ll only be five."

He leaned back and scanned everyone. "Do you get the gist of what I’m saying? If we’re going to go all out, we should at least step on the battlefield in our best state." He snapped his eyes at Tiger and jerked his chin mildly.

"Admit it or not, your existing injuries are hindering you to an extent," he continued, then shifted his eyes to Primo. "You too. You were lucky today, but you might run out of luck if you keep testing it. As a doctor, I advise you to rest as much as you can."

Primo could only scoff but was unable to argue. How could he? If Moose says it that way, then Primo would only look like a fool if he argued.

"I know the situation is dire and resting seems like a waste of time. But..." Dominic trailed off, setting his eyes on the hot-blooded Primo. "There’s a reason my wife specifically ordered we rescue them and avoid engaging in a fight. It’s because we’re not ready yet."
