Chapter 940: Escaped... or nah?

"Our boss told me to check on how the children were doing. I’m sending some people to pick them up — Sir Dominic’s orders."

After hearing Dane’s short phone call, Alfred couldn’t help but cast Dane a side-eye. "Do you think that would work?" he asked out of plain curiosity. "If Dominic Zhu is here, I’m sure he already told his other people about your betrayal."

"That’s right." Dane placed the phone down, his expression dark and solemn. "Knowing him, he surely would’ve given out a memo about me."

"Then why did you do that?"

"This is why I sometimes find partnering up with you irritating, Alfred." Dane clicked his tongue. "You’re strong, but sometimes, slow."

Alfred frowned but wasn’t surprised by Dane’s remarks. It wasn’t a secret in their group, after all. And even when he first met Dane, the latter directly told him the reason for recruiting him. It was his strength and fearlessness, despite his lack of intelligence.

"I only called one of his bodyguards because, for sure, he would tell Dominic about what I did," Dane explained nonchalantly. "It’s my warning to him. Considering Alexander Cafre is attacking Dragon as we speak, then that meant they probably knew what happened to him and those little runts. I don’t think they would even dare try to escape without considering confronting us."

Dane paused as he tapped his finger against the rifle on his lap. His brief silence compelled Alfred to cast him a quick look.

"What is it, boss?" Alfred asked. "Why did you turn quiet so suddenly?"

"I’m just worried about one person."

"Worried?" Alfred furrowed his brows, his guard was all up the soonest he heard his boss use the word ’worry.’

"Mhm." Another glint flickered across Dane’s eyes as he focused on the black sedan. "I’m curious if his wife joined this operation or stayed behind."

"His wife? That Dominic’s wife?"

"Don’t underestimate her, Alfred." Dane lifted his chin as he leaned back, holding the handle above the door as he could see a turn up ahead. "Dominic Zhu worries me since I know what he’s capable of, but that wife of his is crazy. Insane."

He squinted his eyes as he recalled that particular person. "After all, she’s the only person who didn’t trust me, no matter how careful I was. Now that I thought about it, she suddenly, after five years of locking herself, had her eyes on me. I even considered recruiting her. Her instinct is one thing, but her skills are another matter. She’s the reason Dominic Zhu is still alive right now and if she’s in this place, killing her is our priority."

A moment of silence enveloped the vehicle as Alfred processed everything Dane spewed. Because of the turn ahead, he couldn’t look at Dane. However, he didn’t need to see his boss’s expression to see if he was serious.

It was rare for Dane to speak of someone with such high regard and caution. There was only one person who Dane had stayed away from in the past and that was Hera Cruel. If not for Dragon, their syndicate wouldn’t even consider the Reapers as enemies. Dane would rather ally with the reapers than make an enemy out of them.

"Heaven Liu," Dane remarked. "Remember that name. She has the face of an angel, but the soul of a devil."

"Got it!" Alfred replied and right after, he twisted the steering wheel to the right, following the black sedan ahead of them.

[DRAGON’s DEN]

"Ahh!" Hera squealed as another explosion came from behind them. She and Dragon jumped away from instinct, making her roll to the ground and cover her ears.

Meanwhile, Dragon clenched his teeth and covered her from behind. He grunted and clasped the grass as something flew in their direction and hit back.

"Damn it," he breathed out, his entire body was shaking. But when he gazed down, he ascertained she was safe, although screaming.

"Hera," he called under his jagged breath, forcing himself to look back.

There, behind them, was a burning chopper. By the looks of it, Fig made sure it wouldn’t land on them. Probably because of Hera. The spot where the chopper landed was in the direction where Romnick fled. Even so, the fire and heatwave made it feel like they were right next to the burning chopper.

"Come on, Hera!" Dragon, despite the pain in his back, clasped her biceps up. "That chopper will still explode the second time."

"Huh?" Hera looked back, but before she knew it, she was once again getting dragged by him. "Wait!"

"We don’t have much time!" Dragon yelled back, almost limping his way as his vision suddenly shook.

Hera, on the other hand, simply allowed him to drag her with him. Her eyes shook, keeping her focus on the blood trickling down his temple. Ever since waking up in this body, there was never a moment she saw Dragon this haggard.

Now that she thought of it, even though he had dragged her with him, he didn’t act like the captor dragging his captive. If anything, he had been protecting her from everything since the first explosion.

Did he get hit while protecting her?

’No, don’t think like that!’ she mentally scolded herself, pulling her arm from him, but his grip just tightened. "Let me go!"

Whatever drug in her system still made her weak. Or perhaps she was simply weak emotionally and mentally with everything that had happened.

"Shut up!" Dragon yelled back, tugging her arm to keep her moving. "If you keep stubborn, you and I will die!"

"I don’t care! Let me go!"

"Hera!!!" This time, Dragon stopped and screamed his lungs out. His eyes blazed and his grip on her arm tightened as if he was planning to break her bone. "Stop this madness right now. If your claim is true, then you should know how serious this situation is."

"Hah!" Hera laughed. "Dragon, this situation is only dangerous for you and not for me. Didn’t they come to rescue me?"

He ground his teeth, knowing she was right. "Come on!" he tugged her arm one more time. "Don’t force me to knock you unconscious again." Dragon breathed out as he shoved his hand in his suit.

"The plan is interrupted. Get us out of here."

Hearing him, Hera stopped walking and put all her weight on her feet. Although she regained a bit of strength, she was still like a withered leaf, with barely enough strength. Surely, this body was on the brink of a drug overdose.

"I don’t want to go! Let me go!" she yelled and yelled, but to no avail. When she heard tires screeching and a black sedan stopping in front of them, her struggles grew more violent. "Stop! No!"

"Hera!" Dragon shouted, launching a powerful punch into her stomach. Her breath instantly hitched, lips parted, hunching in from the pain.

Dragon caught her in his arms. "Damn it," he ground his teeth.

Dragon panted, dragging her to the backseat and throwing her inside. He then went inside the backseat, shoving Hera to the other side so they fit. And once he closed the door, the vehicle sped away from the scene as if their life depended on it.
