Chapter 925: Let’s get the party started

"Dimitri, this mission is doomed to fail. I’m retreating."

Dane’s expression darkened as soon as he heard Romnick’s jagged announcement. Doomed to fail? For his trusted henchman to say something like that, something must have gone horribly wrong.

But what was it? What did Dane miss before planning this attack?

Dane and Dragon had been partners for years now. He knew how the latter operated and how cunning Dragon could be. However, because Dane studied Dragon so well throughout the years, he was confident he had considered whatever card his former partner had on his sleeve.

Silence dominated the line momentarily before Romnick’s jagged voice was heard again.

"That guy... is he working for Dragon now? I don’t think so. He almost killed the both of us."

Deep lines appeared between Dane as he subconsciously glanced to his right. It seemed Romnick was talking to himself and by the sound of it, he was running and in pain.

"Romnick, what’s going on over there?" he asked, pressing the earpiece as if that would give him more hint of what was happening on Romnick’s side. "Who is this person you’re talking about?"

"Dimitri," Romnick spoke once again, his heavy breaths laced his voice. "Remember that guy you warned us about the most?"

The guy that he warned them most about?

It took a few seconds for Dane to rummage through his memories. He had been out on a mission and had spent day and night working for Dominic. Therefore, many of his memories in the past before his employment in the Lyon Group were hazy.

’The guy I warned them about?’he repeated in his head, and his eyes dilated. ’That guy?’

When Dane set his eyes on Dragon, he already had a general idea of the Reaper’s dynamics. Dragon also helped, giving out some details that a non-member of the organization wouldn’t find out. According to Dragon and also backed by Dane’s research, all the core members in the said organization were extraordinarily skilled. But there were a few who excelled the most and should be watched out for.

One of them was the only person in the Reapers who had a hundred percent success rate on his mission.

"He’s here. I’m not sure if he’s working alone or if his appearance is somewhat connected with Alexander Cafre. Either way, we didn’t expect that these guys would be here. We still don’t know yet if all of them are here, but if that’s the case, then I call everyone for retreat."

Dane drew a deep breath as he rocked his head. "So, that is my miscalculation, huh?" he whispered, eyes glinting maliciously.

’I knew it was strange for Alexander Cafre to be in that place, considering he was locked up behind bars not long ago.’Dane clenched his teeth and already had a good grasp of what was going on on the other side. ’Why, though? Is Dominic also there?’

His eyes glowed that they almost appeared red, and his teeth clenched tightly. In some stroke of fate, a few core members of the Reapers became Dominic’s bodyguard. No matter how Dane protested about it, Dominic hired them without even knowing who these people were.

In other words, Dominic might have been also behind this attack. But why? Dominic had no reason to attack Dragon. Sure. They met once because Dragon was careless about showing up during the anniversary event just to end Alexander Cafre.

’It was also possible he wasn’t behind this.’ Dane nodded, considering this possibility. ’Those people had every reason to be in that place, considering Hera Cruel was held captive. It was possible they resigned and are now back to their old ways.’

The thought of Dominic having nothing to do with any of this brought this trance of calmness to his heart. Perhaps it was the thought that Dominic was admirable in anything he would do. As much as Dane hated to admit it, Dominic was truly an exceptional one. Dane’s only advantage over Dominic was his lack of conscience. But if Dominic was given the proper resources — the Reapers, for instance — he would be a terrifying enemy. For sure, Dominic would also use these resources to their maximum potential.

As Dane was taking his precious time processing Romnick’s remarks, Alfred, who was sitting across from him, never looked away from him. Deep lines resurfaced on Alfred’s forehead while observing his boss.

’This is strange,’he thought. ’I’ve never seen him this shaken. Even when we lose people in mission, he never showed this side of him. I wonder what’s going on on Romnick’s side.’

"Ugh!"

Dane snapped back to the current lapse when he heard Romnick grunt.

"Insanity," Romnick breathed out. "Surely, Dragon didn’t deserve the title."

From what Dane could hear from the other side, there was a symphony of Romnick’s deep breaths, some crackling sound that even the noise cancellation couldn’t conceal, and this pulsing silence in between. Dane took a deep breath as he recomposed his thoughts. But before he could say anything, he noticed Alfred’s darkening expression.

Alfred also had an earpiece, but it wasn’t connected to Romnick. While complaining to Dane earlier, he was multitasking and listening to some reports from a unit under his command.

"Boss," called Alfred as he slowly rose from his seat. "There’s an intruder in Sorrento."

Dane immediately looked back at Alfred.

"From what I heard, they came from Dragon’s new alliance," Alfred announced solemnly, not giving out more details, as he knew Dane already understood everything.

Ram was also on the move... just as expected.

Dane smirked as he took another deep breath, huffing sharply as he leaned forward to pick up a rifle.

"A full retreat," Dane ordered to Romnick as he slowly rose from his seat, eyes on Alfred. "Fighting them isn’t what we planned today. Don’t head back here either. It seemed Dragon also sent a surprise for me today. Heh. We’re truly alike in some ways."

The second he gave out that order, Dane tossed the rifle to Alfred. "Tell Katherine to stay behind. We’ll catch all the rats sneaking around Sorrento today."

"That’s what I’m talking about!"

With that being said, Alfred and Dane made their way outside to deal with Ram’s forces. They expected Dragon to attack them as well, but what they didn’t expect was another force driving their way straight to their front door.
