Chapter 923: Familiar name
"If that’s what my lady wants, then shoot me. Follow your heart’s desire. Kill me, Ivy Wei."
Ivy’s eyes blazed as Dane taunted her, holding the pistol in the middle of his forehead. The side of his lips curled up fearlessly, eyes shining in amusement. She clenched her teeth, which made her jaw tighten, swallowing the lump in her throat.
"You disgust me," she hissed before snatching the pistol from his forehead. "Killing you is easy, but if that is what you want, then I won’t give that to you."
Ivy rolled her eyes as she disassembled the pistol, pausing as she caught the single bullet in the magazine. She could tell that the firearm was loaded just by its weight. After all, during the time she was so obsessed with Dane, she did a deep dive into firearms and even learned how to use them. Assembling, disassembling, cleaning its parts, and precision in marksmanship were all the skills she learned and could now do with her eyes closed.
For sure, Dane knew that as well. He knew this pistol was loaded, perhaps, he was the one to put the bullet inside and threw it at her knowing that fact.
"Oh, goodness." Alfred, who sat across from them, patted his chest. "Boss! Why would you taunt her like that!? What if she shoots you?!"
Dane only chuckled in response before snapping his eyes to the muscled blessed Alfred. "I’m fine with that." Keeping his smile, he shifted his attention to Ivy. "If I’m going to die, how romantic would it be to be killed by her?"
Alfred gasped in disbelief, darting his eyes between Dane and Ivy. He knew his boss was crazy, and that woman was a trophy he had taken home from his long mission. But from what he had seen so far, it seemed Dane’s interest in his trophy was more than just a plaything.
"Romantic?" Ivy repeated in mockery, looking back at Dane. "Why am I surprised to hear this? You know I won’t pull the trigger even if I know it’s loaded, Dimitri."
"I was hopeful." Dane shrugged. "It would’ve been nice if you did. After all, killing me is the only way out of here."
"You don’t actually believe that, do you?" A ridiculing chuckle escaped her. "I know anyone could be a murderer if cornered. To tell you the truth, I am also capable of killing you and just now, I was an inch close to pulling the trigger."
A fierce glint flickered across her eyes as a layer of frost gradually coated them. "However, no matter how much I want you dead right this instance, I will never pull the trigger. Not because I am not capable of killing you, but because I don’t want any trace of you in my life."
The corners of Dane’s lips stretched as amusement shone in his eyes. One way or another, he expected that from her. The reason he was so daunting in taunting her into shooting him right in the head. Ivy was a prideful woman. He didn’t believe she couldn’t kill a human being. If only he would give her a great motivation, she would do it in a heartbeat.
But it seemed she truly loathed him this time. After all, killing him means Dane would stay in her mind forever. Not just as the first person she killed, but for unlocking a dark side of her that could take a human life. She would never be the same once she had taken a person’s life.
What an evil man.
"I was right when I first set my eyes on you," Dane commented as he looked away, shifting his attention to the other rifle to clean them. "You are worthy of my interest, Miss Wei."
Ivy paused as she gripped the parts of the pistol. "Worthy of your interest? Don’t make me laugh." The vein in her temple protruded, barely holding in her anger at the nonsense that came out of his damned mouth.
She had always craved love and attention growing up. That was why when Dane showed her what she had always sought, she fell in love with him so hard. But now that she thought about it, she couldn’t help but have a wave of chill down her spine.
Did Dane show her kindness and care, knowing she was vulnerable and unhealed from her childhood traumas? Did he do that on purpose to make her dance in the palm of his hand? Now that he had known the real man behind that kind face, Ivy couldn’t help but have goosebumps. All the memories she had about Dane gave off another perspective. Instead of the kind smile, she could imagine the smirk behind that amicable mask. The gentle eyes that made her feel seen were now glinting like a predator, and those caring gestures he showed her made her stomach turn.
As Ivy thought about it, she almost jumped when a sudden laugh broke out in the lobby. Turning her head, her eyes fell on Dane, who was laughing out loud for some reason. Deep lines appeared between her brows, shifting her eyes to get some hint from Alfred. However, Alfred cocked his head to the side, equally curious as her.
"Hahaha!" Dane held his head, holding his stomach as his laughter slightly subsided. He pressed on the earpiece on his right and then leaned back comfortably. "Romnick, I take it back. Hera Cruel, she’s truly an interesting one."
Ivy arched a brow as she studied Dane’s side profile. He spread his arm across the backrest, resting his leg over the other. She saw him press on his other ear, and she assumed he had an earpiece in it.
’Hera Cruel?’ she wondered, first time hearing the name. ’Who is she?’
"I’m sorry. I know I told you that you can decide the operation, but I want to see this Hera Cruel for myself. I’ve heard tons of things about her, but now I think it would be nice to meet her in person at least once," Dane continued, still chuckling faintly. "Will you take her back with you? If she doesn’t want and gives you a hard time, then kill her. It’s a shame, but I don’t want you to have a hard time as well."
Ivy studied Dane quietly, curious about who this woman Dane was talking about, which revealed curiosity and indecisiveness in his eyes.
’For some reason, I felt like I heard that name before.’
