Chapter 917: what would it take for you to let me go?
Meanwhile...
"Ugh..." Hera grunted, feeling a little dizzy at the bouncy movement she was in. With a throbbing head, she forced herself to open her eyes. Her vision was blurry, only getting clearer after a few careful blinks.
’Huh?’
Deep lines appeared between her brows as she lifted her head, only to see Dragon’s lower face. Only then did Hera realize he was carrying her in her arms after she suddenly lost consciousness of this knock on her back.
"You!" Hera clutched Dragon’s chest on instinct, wide-eyed. "Where are you taking me!? Let me go!"
Despite the ache on the back of her head and her throbbing head, Hera threw a weak punch at his chest. However, Dragon was unfazed. If anything, she only felt his grip around her tighten.
"I’ll deal with you later, Hera," warned Dragon under his breath, not gazing down at her as he approached the end of the west garden. "Don’t rush it now."
Hera clenched her teeth as her eyes shone irritably. Instead of listening to him, she wiggled and threw weak punches at him. Much to her dismay, it wasn’t enough to hinder him from taking her. Hence, she added a scream in her struggle when she realized she was too weak at the moment.
"Let me go!!" she screamed her lungs out while punching his chest. "Let me go! Help!!! I’m here!!!"
Dragon clenched his teeth, ignoring her screams without fail. It was a good thing he had a spare medication with him and administered it to her while she was unconscious. Normally, Dragon wouldn’t even consider that. But after everything that had happened, the last thing he wanted was Hera slowing him down, which explained her weakness even when she regained consciousness.
"I said let me go!!" she continued. "Help! He’s going to take me! Help me!!"
The more she screamed for help, the more his heart raced in his chest. Hearing her call for help and struggle in this weakened and pathetic state was annoying. It only reminded him of all the days and nights they spent together. If she remembered everything from start to present, does that mean she had been fooling him all along?
Those sweet nothings, those passionate kisses they shared, and the steamy nights together... she did all of those without flinching. And now she was telling him everything was just a farce to fool him?
What a great pretender.
What an evil woman. Truly wicked.
Hera was lucky that this situation was happening right now. If not, Dragon would surely take his time, making her feel the pain he was going through right now. Back then, she hurt him many times. But this level of pain she inflicted upon him was unspeakable — unforgivable. She made him bleed from the inside, ruining him and every meaning of the word.
"I can’t believe I believed everything," he hissed, eyes still ahead, but his grip around her trembled. He could barely hold back the anger swelling in his chest. "You must really think I was a pushover."
Hera froze on the spot, gazing up at him with shaking eyes. She could barely see the look in his eyes, but she could see the deep pain hiding beneath the fire within them. Her heart almost leaped out of her chest as her stomach dropped.
"Frank..." Her lips quivered as they drained of color. "Please let me go."
His grip tightened, making her bite her lips as tears coated her eyes.
"Please..." her voice broke, clasping his chest even tighter. "Just let me go. Holding on to me will only hurt both of us."
She didn’t wish to cry at him. She didn’t want to look more vulnerable than she already had. However, after seeing that look in his eyes, she wasn’t the only one falling apart right now. If there was more scared, more in pain, and more miserable, that would be him.
It was strange to put it that way, but that was what she felt.
Hera thought she would find satisfaction if she ruined him, but now she realized she wasn’t that kind of person. Not that she forgave him. If anything, she still hated him and that would never change. That was why she felt sorry for him, because no matter what he did, she would never love him.
Never.
Neither the current Hera nor the real Hera would reciprocate the affection he craved.
"You hurt me, and I hurt you," she added through her gritted teeth, resting her forehead on his chest to hide her tears. "Just how much more pain do you want us to inflict on each other before you give up on me?"
She punched his chest one more time, but this time, it was weaker than before. "You know I will never love you if I remember everything. You are not stupid, Frank. After everything you had done — after showing me your worst and best — the outcome is still the same!"
"Please... just let me go! Just let me die!" she raised her voice, now sobbing uncontrollably as she gazed up. "Just what would it take for you to let me go?!"
Dragon ground his teeth, trying his best to ignore her pleading. He swallowed the lump in his throat, keeping himself focused on leaving this place.
"You..." his voice cracked, making him pause as he gathered his emotions. "... shouldn’t have reached out your hand that time."
Hera froze, looking up at him blankly.
"You shouldn’t have smiled at me and held out your hand, telling me to take care of me forever," he continued quietly, still keeping up his pace to take her to safety. "If only you turn a blind eye just like everyone else or if only you were just as selfish as everyone else, then we wouldn’t be in this situation."
His fierce front broke momentarily as if some unpleasant memories filled his head in a split second. "But you... ruined yourself first, and you made everyone watch how you declined."
"I wasn’t the one who didn’t let go," he added under his breath, this time calmer than a second ago. "It’s you who clings to me... until now."
