Chapter 885: That dream and this reality — which one was worse?

[Meanwhile, in the Dragon’s Den.]

Hera stood in front of the window, bathing under the moonlight that was lighting through the glass window. She hugged herself, recalling the earlier events. Even though it seemed the dinner banquet Dragon hosted seemed to be a success, she couldn’t take her mind off of the fact she met Fig.

’She knew,’she told herself, a little relieved after knowing the real Hera already knew her situation. ’She will help me. I can... get out of here.’

The side of her mouth curled up into a subtle smile, only for it to fade away after a second.

’I can... get out of here,’she repeated in her mind. ’And then... what?’

Hera pressed her lips into a thin line. It never crossed her before what life had for her after she escaped. She only thought of escaping in the past, but now that the chances of escaping were high, a question suddenly lingered in her mind.

What sort of life has this face had once she escaped?

If she was still in this body, then she could only think of a few. One of them was being a recluse because this face was something she couldn’t display anywhere. Dragon was only one of the many enemies who wanted Hera dead. Even if she was able to survive this predicament, her life after that would be no different.

’I can’t go back to acting or stay being friends with Leo,’ she thought, clutching her shoulder tightly. ’I can’t be with Basti too. With this face, how would he know his mother is actually in this body?’

She didn’t even consider Dominic. She wanted nothing from him. That man was in love with someone else.

Her original body, or rather, the person who was now inhabiting her body, was now living as Heaven Liu. Even if the soul in Hera’s body thought how easy it was to be Heaven Liu, she couldn’t just wish to get her life back. After all, before waking up in this body, she gave up on her life. She didn’t value her life and now that she lived as another, it would be too shameless of her to even think of getting her life back.

’Can I live?’ she wondered to herself, turning around until her eyes fell on the bed where Dragon was sleeping. ’Hera, can I live as you?’

Hera slowly marched toward the bed, standing beside it, eyes on Dragon. Her lips were drawn into a tight and thin slash before she slowly sat down on the side of the bed. As her weight pressed on the mattress, deep lines appeared between Dragon’s brows before his eyes opened.

"Hera?" he called, confused. When his brain started functioning, he realized she was sitting on his side of the bed instead of her spot. He propped his elbows against the mattress, sitting up with his eyes on her.

"Hera, why are you awake?" he asked with a coarse voice. "Is everything alright?"

No. Nothing had ever been right since she woke up in this body. But Hera kept her lips shut while keeping her gaze fixated on Dragon.

"I had a dream, Frank," she whispered. "In that dream, I was someone else."

Dragon furrowed his brows at that strange look in her eyes.

"I didn’t like who I was and didn’t value the life I had. For me, being that person was more like a curse," she continued in the same quiet and sentimental tone. "I thought I was unlucky to be that person, and I kept asking why things happened to me. But then, in that same dream, after many years of lamenting, I woke up again. This time, my wish not to be me was granted."

The corner of her lips curled up, still not sure why she was telling Dragon this. Not that she felt attached to him. Her initial hatred and disgust toward the man remained in her heart. Perhaps it was even worse now. Even so, she wanted to find out why she wanted to tell him her side of the truth through a lie.

"But this body I woke up to... lives a much tougher life than I did," she added quietly. "Her life... her existence was the real curse. People want her for all the wrong reasons, and even if she is a little scary, she has a big heart to spare. It’s the reason some people break down pieces of her heart simply because they can’t understand that what she can give was all she had to give."

’Ah...’ she thought, mentally nodding in understanding. ’Now I know why I am doing this.’

At the end of the day, even though Hera knew Dragon was a sick bastard, she wanted to know why he had done this to the original Hera. She could simply think Dragon was an obsessed psycho who wanted to monopolize Hera. However, she wanted to know that wasn’t all there was. She wanted to hear he had a deeper reason; a reason that wasn’t as simple as what she believed. Something that would be a little more meaningful to her.

It wasn’t like she planned to forgive him or the sort. She simply wanted to know that Hera’s efforts in the past weren’t in vain. Ironic and illogical as it may sound, but maybe knowing he had a deeper reason would make her believe she could live as Hera Cruel in the future.

"Is that so?" Dragon smiled helplessly and cupped her face affectionately. "Don’t worry, Hera. It was just a dream."

’Right...’she whispered inwardly. ’What am I expecting? That he’d tell me everything just because I told him about a dream?’

"You’re here with me," he said, leaning his face closer until his forehead was touching hers. "That dream is nonsense. There’s no way we can live in someone else’s life and be a completely different person. Though the idea sounds tempting."

The corner of his lips curled up before he drew his head back. His hand remained on her cheeks, brushing them with his thumb.

"I’m glad you woke up from that dream and told me about it," he said, smiling in satisfaction. "Don’t worry. I might not be able to protect you in that dream, but I’ll always be with you in reality. I’ll never leave you, and I will always be by your side. No one else can ever hurt you as long as I’m around."

His words... sounded like the chains locking around her feet and bounding her entire body securely. That dream and this reality — which one was worse?

"Frank," she called. "Why... do you love me so much?"
