Chapter 848: Tarts
Chapter 848: Tarts
"Is everything alright?" Leo asked, looking at Hera cautiously.
Earlier today, he had seen Hera with an old man in the pavilion. Knowing he shouldn’t interfere, he went back to his room. However, about an hour later, Hera suddenly entered the guesthouse without saying anything. All she did was sit in the small lobby area, staring into nothing. It was concerning.
"Hera?" he called one more time, clearing his throat to get her attention. "Can you hear me?"
"I’m doomed," Hera whispered listlessly, her eyes fixed on the centerpiece in the middle of the coffee table.
"Doomed?" Leo repeated, confused. "What do you mean by that?"
Hera slowly blinked, shifting her gaze to him. "It means... I might not get out of here."
Deep lines appeared between his brows as he assessed the pale look on her face. A short smile turned up on his face as he exhaled deeply.
"Is that so?" he said. "Well, I guess that means I might not get out of here too."
"Leo."
"Anyway, I made you some tarts." Leo smiled proudly, tipping his head to the desserts on the table. "Why don’t you give them a try? It’s not my first time, but I lacked a few ingredients. So, they might taste different."
Hera kept her solemn gaze on him, lips pressed into a thin line. When she looked away, her eyes fell on the snacks he had prepared for her. She hadn’t noticed them since she had come in to take a breather.
"I’m sorry," she whispered, holding her hands in her lap to stop them from trembling. "I promised you that I will do everything so you can leave this place. But now..."
"It’s fine."
"It’s not fine."
"I know, but it should be fine." Hera slowly turned her attention back to him upon his remark, only to see him smiling. "I appreciate that you’re trying your best, but at the same time, I also understand we have limited options. It’s not like I am the only one who’s trapped here. So, don’t feel bad that your plans didn’t work. I’ll only feel bad if I get out of here, knowing you are still in here."
Hera bit her inner bottom lip as a thin layer of tears coated her eyes. The tension rising in her throat made her neck taut, almost hopeless in this scenario.
"Sorry," she whispered, unable to stop a tear from rolling down her cheek. "For putting you in this situation."
"Hey, hey." Leo moved closer to the end of the couch as she sat on the one-seater couch beside it. "It’s okay. I don’t hold a grudge about that anymore, so don’t cry."
As a kind-hearted man, he reached for her face and wiped her tears. He wore a small smile, nodding at her reassuringly.
"Don’t cry, hmm?" he hummed, brows raised. "Everything will be fine, Hera. It might not be now, but eventually, we’ll have more opportunities in the future."
"What if there won’t be any in the future?"
"Then... I guess we just have to be useful?" He shrugged. "To be honest, I’ve already accepted my fate the first time I met Dragon. At that time, I knew for sure I would die. But then, an opportunity arose. Although I’m not saying he might not kill me in the future, the fact that I am still alive right now proves I still have control over my death."
Leo took a deep breath as he smacked his lips. "So, don’t feel too bad about it. I’m an actor, so I can just think I’m preparing for a character role. I’m pretty flexible too, so if I put my mind to it, I’m sure I’ll learn my way around here."
"Including killing?" she asked under her breath, making him freeze for a moment. "Leo, these guys kill people. Do you think these hands haven’t taken a person’s life?"
A moment of silence befell the two of them, staring into each other’s eyes. Her sudden rebut took him off guard, but at the same time, Leo wasn’t as foolish as to believe he would keep his hands clean for a long time, especially if he couldn’t get out of this place anytime soon.
"Yes," he breathed out, nodding. "I’d do everything and learn everything, including that. And I don’t care about anything you did in the past as well. I’m sure you had your reasons."
Hera opened her mouth to retort about his answer. But in the end, she kept her mouth shut. The original Hera did have a reason for taking the path she did. And if there was someone who should understand the real Hera, that would be the soul who was now in this body.
"Anyway, will you try these tarts?" Leo picked up the tart with a smile. "I’m really looking forward to giving them to you."
Hera pressed her lips and gazed at the dessert in his hand. A subtle smile turned up on her face, taking the piece of delight from him. Before taking a bite, she cast him a quick look.
"I regret putting you in this situation, but at times like this, I’m grateful you’re here," she blurted out, almost biting her tongue as she let her emotion take over her for a moment. Thankfully, Leo simply laughed it off.
"Oddly enough," he said, grinning. "I’m quite relieved I’m in this place, though I’m not sure if that is the correct term."
He took a deep breath as he leaned forward, resting his arms on his leg, eyes on her. "Just thinking about you being alone in here with no one you can rely on is heartbreaking. So, in a way, it feels less lonely to have someone in the same situation."
Her eyes softened as her heart warmed up. But this time, she didn’t tear up. She just felt selfishly grateful to have him in here. He made this life a little less torturous.
"Thank you," she whispered, raising the tart slightly. "I hope this is good."
"I hope so too." Leo winked, watching her take a bite with a smile.
