Chapter 847: Didn’t want to risk it

Ram was one of the people in whom Hera had placed her hope. Given her situation, her options were limited. Since she had heard no word from Deborah, she wanted to believe their plan was underway. But alas, all hopes went down the drain in one minute.

How silly, she thought.

"Hera, this is your uncle, Ram," Dragon stood between Hera and Ram, introducing the two of them. "He already knew about your condition and what happened. So, it’s alright."

"Hera." Ram’s eyes softened as he reached for her hand, gazing down at it with an affectionate smile. "You’re really here," he whispered, relief evident in his eyes. "I can’t believe this."

Hera stared at the pair of affectionate eyes mirroring her face. Her lips were formed into a thin line. She had never met this man in her life, but many of the memories in her mind recognized him.

’He looked a lot older,’she thought, considering Ram looked way healthier in the original Hera’s memories.

"Uncle?" she whispered, looking at Dragon with confusion in her eyes.

Dragon flashed her a reassuring smile. "I didn’t mention it because it was meant to be a surprise. You’ve been asking about your family, so..." he trailed off, casting Ram a knowing look. "I’ll leave the two of you so you can enjoy your time together."

Dragon wore a quick smile, darting his eyes between the two. Just as he was about to turn around, Hera suddenly held his hand. Looking back at her, all he saw was her worries.

"It’s alright, Hera," he reassured, holding her hand gently. "I’m sure you’re a little worried, but Ram is a good man. He had taken care of you when you were a lot younger. You might not remember him, but once you talk to him, I’m sure you’ll like him."

"Hera," called Ram worriedly, watching her look at him. His smile had a tone of bitterness, snapping his eyes to Dragon. "It’s alright, Frank. If she doesn’t want to spend some time with me, let’s not force her. I’m just glad to see her."

"Are you sure?" Dragon arched a brow, and Ram nodded. "Well, if that’s the case..."

"I think it’s alright," Hera murmured, releasing Dragon’s hand as she looked at Ram timidly. "I was just caught off guard, that’s why I reacted like that. I’m sorry if that offended you."

"Hera, it’s not — there’s no need to apologize." Ram waved both his hands, smiling. "I understand the situation, and meeting someone who claims to be your relative can be quite overwhelming. So, don’t apologize for something you shouldn’t be."

Her expression softened as she nodded. Casting Dragon a look, the side of her lips stretched.

"I’m okay now, Frank," she said reassuringly. "I think I’m ready to talk to him."

"Feel free to call me when you need me." Dragon took a step closer to her, planting a kiss on top of her head. "I’m just around the corner."

Hera smiled brightly at him as she nodded. Dragon and Ram looked at each other for a moment before Dragon walked away. As he did, Hera faced Ram with a smile.

"Uncle Ram, do you want to go to the garden?" she asked, making Ram’s brows raise. "Flowers always bring me comfort. And since you’re a stranger to me, it’ll help so I don’t feel awkward or nervous."

"Of course," Ram answered with a light chuckle.

With that being said, Hera ushered Ram to the pavilion. The garden had always been the only place that gave her solace. That was why she was often there, and right now, she wanted to bathe herself in the sight of beautiful flowers to think properly.

In the pavilion, Hera and Ram sat opposite each other. Her kits, which she often used to arrange a vase, were already on the table.

"It seems you found a hobby here," Ram pointed out, recalling some of the pictures Dragon sent him of Hera making a vase.

"I initially thought of just making one for Frank, but eventually, I found it relaxing and rewarding. So, I kept arranging one whenever I have the time," she answered with a smile. "I didn’t know my uncle was visiting me today. If only I knew, I would’ve made you one."

Ram smiled warmly, staring at her with a myriad of thoughts circling in his mind. He was in almost disbelief. For five years, he thought Hera was dead. He believed he wouldn’t see her again, let alone hold her. But here she was, smiling so radiantly and beautifully. It reminded him of those days when Hera was still oblivious to the burden of her family name.

How he thought he would never see her smile like this again.

’I was almost grateful to Frank,’he thought, but deep in his heart, he couldn’t truly say so.

"Hera, are you happy?" he asked after a moment of silence.

Hera hummed a tune, raising her brows, looking at him with puzzlement. She blinked innocently, tilting her head a little to the side.

"Aside from your amnesia, are you happy now despite not remembering anything in the past?" he asked as this was what truly mattered to him; her happiness. Even for a little while — even if it was a life of deception — as long as she was happy, he would do anything he could to protect it.

Hera didn’t answer immediately, staring at the old man across from her. From what she could see, Ram was genuine about whatever he had in mind. However, because of her great acting skills, he failed to see her immediate and subtle answer‌ to that question.

"Of course," she said, smiling. "Even though I don’t remember anything, Frank and everyone were kind to me. Everyone is just patient with me and they just take care of me. So yes, you can say I am happy."

"Is that so?" Ram nodded and smiled. "Then that’s all I need to know. Frankly, I don’t like him. But seeing how you two interact and the way he looks at you, I’m reassured he loves you."

He nodded once more, looking at her straight in the eye. "I’m genuinely happy that you are okay, Hera."

"Thanks." Her voice was meek as her smile faded a little. "I’m also glad that you visited me, Uncle."

The two of them stared at each other with a smile. What Ram didn’t know was that Hera was biting her tongue, stopping herself from asking for help, knowing Ram was there because he probably joined forces with Dragon. Or maybe Ram was with him all along.

She didn’t want to risk it. So in the end, Hera could only play along like what she had been doing for a long time.
