Chapter 827: Too old for this gig
Twenty years ago, a gas leak killed a family of three, a story that the entire town would never forget. The Zhang family was renowned for being kind and generous neighbors. Despite the passage of time, everyone who knew them could never forget. Each person had at least a word or two of praise for the Zhang family.
"Dane Zhang..." Tiger breathed out, standing in front of the high school attended by the teenage son of the Zhang couple. "If this is not you, I won’t even bother."
Tiger drew a deep breath, swallowing hard. With a sharp huff, he marched toward the imposing gates of the establishment.
"Ever since the incident, there hasn’t been anyone from the Zhang family at the school..."
After asking around, Tiger finally met someone who could help with his investigation. Standing in the office, he watched an old man rummage through the files to find a yearbook from twenty years ago. Even though the teenage son of the Zhang family didn’t graduate, he heard that the school included his photo as a tribute.
Strange, but Tiger didn’t think much of it. After all, this was a small town with practices that might be a little different and old-fashioned compared to the city.
"That poor boy. I remember him because he’s such a nice kid," said the old man, picking up a thick yearbook. "Oh, here it is!"
Tiger perked up as he watched the old man turn around to face him. His eyes beneath his thin glasses squinted, walking toward Tiger.
"Why don’t you take a seat, young man?" the old man motioned to the sofa, to which Tiger responded with a short nod. "What is your name again?" he asked as they made their way to the couch.
"It’s... Lucy." Tiger stopped a step from the couch and looked at the man.
The old man furrowed his brows as he slowly handed the yearbook to him. "That’s a strange name for a boy."
"Everyone tells me that," Tiger humored, accepting the yearbook with both hands. "Woah. This is heavy."
"Every kid in the town and the neighboring town attends this school," said the old man. "Anyway, I’ll make you some tea."
"No need, thank you. I won’t stay long—"
"It’s alright. I insist." The old man nodded at him reassuringly. "I’ve always been indebted to the Zhang family, and it’s always been my guilt that I couldn’t do anything. Knowing that a relative came here makes me think I would at least relieve the guilt that always weighed my heart down by treating you well."
Tiger smiled and nodded in understanding. "Then I’ll bother you for a bit."
"Don’t mention it, young man." The old man cackled. "I’ll look for more pictures of him if I can. That kid is a smart young lad so he frequently joins school contests. So, it’s a shame his life ended so shortly."
"That’s true."
The old man lingered around Tiger for a while, discussing anything he remembered about the young student named Dane Zhang. He kept talking to the point it started to annoy Tiger. Fortunately, it didn’t last longer than Tiger expected, and he was left alone.
"Just when I thought he wouldn’t stop talking," Tiger murmured and shook his head, eyes falling on the yearbook in his hand. "Dane Zhang. For some reason, I don’t know what I’m hoping for at this second."
Tiger threw every thought to the back of his head, sitting down on the couch. He caressed the thick cover before opening the pages. Not going through every single one of them, Tiger immediately searched through the surnames that started with the letter Z.
"Zhang... Zhang..." he whispered repeatedly, sliding his index on the names on each page. Much to his dismay, the surname was quite common, with many students sharing the same last name.
"Zhang Abigail, Carly... Daffy..."
"Oh, you haven’t found it?"
While Tiger was getting closer to the names he was looking for, he heard the old man’s voice again. He ignored him, catching the old man placing a tray of tea on the coffee table in front of Tiger. The old man gazed at Tiger for a second but didn’t say anything.
Tiger glanced at the old man for a second, only to see the latter searching through the drawers in the corner. Knowing the old man was looking for more pictures, Tiger shifted his undivided attention to the yearbook.
"Zhang..." After some time of searching, Tiger finally found the name he was looking for. "... Dane." His next words came out barely above a whisper, lips parting open, heart sinking a bit.
His eyes remained on the old portrait of the young guy staring motionlessly into the camera. The young lad was wearing glasses, his eyes a little plain, and his face had a slightly long shape.
’This guy...’ Tiger drew a deep breath as he closed his eyes. ’... isn’t the same Dane Zhang I know.’
Even though this was an old photo and it was taken twenty years ago, this guy didn’t resemble the Dane Zhang he knew. Although this young lad in the portrait looked smart, just like Dane, they looked completely different. Tiger should’ve been suspicious since twenty years ago was quite a little long; adding Dane’s age to this incident would make him a lot older than he was.
As Tiger recomposed himself, he suddenly heard a familiar sound. Pressing on the back of his ear was a small, cold, round metal. Tiger slowly reopened his eyes, glancing at his shoulder. The old man was standing behind the couch he was sitting on, holding a pistol at Tiger.
"Old man..." Tiger drew another deep breath as he glanced down at the yearbook on his lap. "Don’t you think you’re past the age of retirement instead of doing this sort of gig?"
The old man smiled. "I was about to retire, but my boss told me someone is poking their nose where it doesn’t belong. I consider this as my last mission." The moment those words rolled out of his tongue, a faint ’bang’ resonated in the office.
