Chapter 787: Trying to be a mother for once

"Disgusting," Hera whispered, wiping her lips vigorously. Her gaze lingered on the door momentarily before she registered Deborah’s presence.

"Right." She sprang from the bed, darting toward the door to lock it. When the click of the lock reached her ears, she released a deep exhale. Turning her head, she spotted Deborah cautiously emerging from the closet.

"Hera," Deborah called under her breath, still in disbelief at what she had just witnessed.

Her lips parted, but no words came out. She stared at Hera, suppressing the tension rising in her throat. What she had seen and how Hera handled the situation sent chills down her spine. If Deborah didn’t know, she would also believe her. Thinking about it, Hera was probably been like this to everyone.

That moment when Hera invited Deborah to assist her for a bath — was it deliberate? The sudden doubt in Deborah’s heart sent another wave of disbelief through her.

"He’ll be back soon," Hera said as she marched toward Deborah, walking past the latter without a moment of pause. Sifting through the closet for a change of clothes, she asked, "Can you leave this room without being seen?"

Deborah glanced back, finding Hera rummaging through the closet. "Right now? I doubt it. I managed to sneak in by taking advantage of shifting guards."

"And yet, you were urging me to come with you moments ago?" Hera hissed, glancing over her shoulder. "Deborah, you’re disappointing me more and more."

"I had no choice. If you had come, we might have escaped."

"With him in the mansion?" Hera scoffed, shaking her head as she grabbed a random dress, facing Deborah squarely. "Deb, you’ve worked for Dragon for years. Do you think you can challenge him and win? Even if you use me as a hostage, you wouldn’t stand a chance."

"I wasn’t planning to use you as a hostage."

"If not that, then what? To rescue me?" Hera mocked. "Why would you save me?"

Deborah’s lips quivered as she pressed them together. "I hadn’t planned to save you either."

"Then, what?"

"I want to return you to your people."

"What?" Hera seemed puzzled.

"Hera, if their experiment didn’t succeed, I’m sure you’re aware that some high-ranking members here were originally from your group. Not all sided with him," Deborah explained, stepping closer to her. "If I could get you out and contact your trusted allies, they might help restore your memories. That was originally my plan, but obviously, there’s no need to restore your memories since you never lost them in the first place."

Hera furrowed her brows, processing Deborah’s words.

"Your former men... those who were once part of your inner circle..." Deborah paused, choosing her words carefully. "With them, there might be a chance."

Silence filled the room as they locked eyes. Deborah’s words were based on facts. Thanks to the original Hera’s memories, this body’s inhabitant recognized familiar faces around the mansion. Though most hadn’t approached her, the current Hera knew they were now allied with Dragon. They were not the people she could easily approach and ask for help.

Yet, that wasn’t the case.

The soul within this body knew exactly where were the people Deborah was referring to. She had seen a few of them. Thanks to the original Hera’s memories, she knew them. But...

"No." Hera shook her head after a moment of contemplation. "They won’t help." The original Hera, their leader, was already with them. They might know about Hera and Heaven’s situation, but if Deborah approached them, that would put Dominic on Dragon’s radar, consequently putting Sebastian in the same danger.

Hera had learned her lesson. Leo was proof. One careless call and she ensnared him in this curse. She wouldn’t risk that again. She wouldn’t make the same mistake again.

’I’ve already caused enough pain to Dom and Basti,’ she thought. ’I can’t do that to them anymore, even if Hera might handle this better than me.’

"Deborah, you don’t understand the Reapers," Hera began firmly. "When I died, I cut ties with them. I gave them a choice, one I never had. It’s their choice if they live it morally or side with a previous enemy. I won’t drag them into this mess I created when I took that dog out of that muddied cage."

"But, Hera—"

"This is non-negotiable," Hera asserted. "If you can’t leave now, hide in the closet. I’ll divert Dragon’s attention and create an opening for you. Leave quietly when you can, then."

She moved closer until they were almost face to face. Hera’s intense eyes met Deborah’s.

"Go to the guest house and..." Hera hesitated to ask Deborah to take Leo. It was too risky. If he was caught with this woman, Hera might not save him. So, before she could ask Deborah a favor, she changed her mind.

"Forget it," Hera said. "Just leave and stay hidden."

"What about you? Are you staying here?" Deborah gasped in disbelief. "Will you keep up this pretense? Don’t you plan to escape? Or have you accepted this fate? And gave up?"

"Who told you I’m giving up? If there’s a goal I have right now, that is to slit that man’s throat. Or kill him in any way I could." Hera’s tone was sharp. She grasped Deborah’s hands, locking her fiery eyes with her. "But right now, there’s nothing I can do. If I resist, he’ll erase my memories again. He might succeed when that happens. I can’t risk that."

"That’s why..." Hera drew a breath, her gaze hardening. "Leave quietly and find Ram for me." Ram was someone from Hera’s memories, who was equally capable enough to help her in this situation. And most especially, he was someone unconnected to Dominic.

’Hera might not know my situation,’she thought, nodding mentally. ’Let’s keep it that way... for Basti.’

The soul in this body hadn’t been a mother to her child. Therefore, at least once, she wanted to do something for Sebastian, even if it meant sacrificing every bit of her soul to win the battle the original Hera hadn’t resolved. It was foolish, but at the same time, this was the least she could do for her son.
