Chapter 776: Slower than a turtle

Meanwhile...

Ivy halted in the entryway of her apartment, furrowing her brows as she surveyed her surroundings with keen attention. A sudden wave of nervousness gripped her heart, prompting her to clasp her hand closer to her chest.

"Has someone been here?" she wondered, sensing that something was amiss.

Ivy took a cautious step back, holding her breath nervously. Living alone for an extended period had honed her instinct to be wary whenever someone entered her room or home in her absence. Fearful of an intruder lurking within her own sanctuary, Ivy tiptoed her way out, exhaling a deep sigh of relief as soon as she stepped beyond her door.

"Oh, god." Ivy retreated a few steps from the entrance, casting a wary gaze at it with trembling eyes. She reached into her purse with shaky hands, fishing out her phone. Despite not confirming anything, she immediately called for security. It was easier to be labeled paranoid than to risk her safety.

Within moments, a team of five security guards rushed to her floor. Upon seeing Ivy shaking in the hallway, concern filled their eyes.

"Miss Wei, are you alright?" inquired the first security guard who reached her.

"Oh, god!" Ivy perked up, holding her phone in front of her. "Thank you for coming immediately. I think someone is inside my place."

The security guards furrowed their brows, directing their attention to her unit. As they did, Ivy began explaining.

"I know this sounds crazy, but when I came in, I felt like someone was inside. So I hurriedly went out." Her voice quivered, and her entire body shivered as she turned her head back to the door. "But while waiting for security, I heard some noises inside."

Ivy swallowed nervously, looking back at the security. "Can you please check?"

"Miss Wei, it’s good that you left before anything could happen," the security guard offered her an understanding smile. "Please stay here while we check the unit."

"Yes." She nodded emphatically, making way for them.

The five security guards approached Ivy’s unit cautiously. As they got closer, faint noises emanated from inside. They instinctively placed their hands on the guns hanging from their hips, exchanging nods. When they stood in front of the door, their hands remained on their weapons, ready to draw them at the first sign of threat.

One security guard approached the door, reaching for the knob carefully. Before twisting it open, he glanced back at his colleagues and nodded. Returning his gaze to the door, he huffed, abruptly twisting the knob and pushing it open.

Upon doing so, they drew their guns, pointing them at the man inside, who seemed about to approach the entryway.

"Don’t move, hands in the air!" ordered one of the security guards, assessing the man inside.

Upon hearing that the intruder was caught, Ivy felt as if someone had splashed her with a bucket of cold water. Her eyes widened while her pupils constricted. She was right—someone was inside her place. Cold sweats dampened her back, and her heart raced nervously.

"Step out of there right now!" yelled the security guard, signaling to his colleague, who reached for his walkie-talkie, calling for backup.

"Hang on!" The man inside, Tiger, kept his hands raised. "What the hell is going on here?"

"You intruded on this place. Step out!"

"Huh?"

As the security and Tiger conversed, Ivy, trembling in fear, furrowed her brows. She barely heard the man’s voice, but it sounded familiar. Without thinking, she approached the security guard until she could see through the doorway and the person inside.

"Tiger?" she blurted out in surprise.

"Hello, darling!" Tiger grinned as his face brightened up at the sight of her. "Please tell these guys I didn’t trespass and to lower their guns. They’re pointing them at an innocent man."

The security guards furrowed their brows, slowly turning their attention back to Ivy. As their eyes met hers, all they saw was confusion dominating her face.

"Miss Wei, do you know this man?" inquired the security guard, curiosity evident in his tone, prompting Ivy to open and close her mouth in uncertainty.

"I’m really sorry for the inconvenience," Ivy reiterated, standing before the five security guards at her door. "I promise this won’t happen again."

"That’s alright, Miss Wei," reassured one of the guards, while the others nodded in understanding. "You acted on what you thought was right, and it’s our duty to ensure tenants feel safe."

A faint smile touched her lips, grateful for their understanding. After exchanging apologies and reassurances, Ivy saw them off, closed the door, and sighed deeply. Recollecting herself, she bit her lip and stepped inside her place.

"Tiger!" Her voice carried a tone of reproach as she halted near the couch where he idled. "Why did you come here without telling me? No. How did you even get in? Did you break in?"

"You gave me a spare key." He blinked innocently, causing her forehead to furrow deeper.

"No, I did not."

Tiger pondered briefly. "I mean, I took one from that drawer in your room."

"You stole it?"

"I borrowed it."

"Tiger!"

"Oops..." Tiger sighed, rising and taking a step closer until he stood in front of her. Without a word, he gently pulled her into an embrace. "I missed you. That’s why I came."

Ivy’s raised brows softened as she glanced sideways, his chin resting on her shoulder, his arms enveloping her petite frame.

"Also, I wanted to see how fast you walk or run," he continued, smiling softly as he briefly squeezed her. "You’re slower than a turtle. I caught up too easily. What a relief."

"Do you think saying all that will calm me down?" she murmured, lowering her head and pinching the fabric on his back. "You scared me, stole my spare key, and trespassed into my place. That’s not romantic."

He chuckled, drawing his head back slightly, his eyes partly squinting. "Fixing your leaking sink isn’t romantic either."

"Clark, I’m tired today... and I can’t..."

"Haha!" Tiger burst out laughing, a mischievous grin on his face, causing her to blush in embarrassment. "I didn’t come for that. I prepared dinner for you. Let’s eat together. I’m going to starve to death waiting for you."

Ivy pursed her lips, feeling a lingering embarrassment about her previous assumptions. But the thought of not having dinner alone tonight warmed her heart.

"It better be good," she warned playfully, a slight pout on her lips. "Or I might not forgive you."

"This time, I put thought into it." He winked, taking her hand to lead her to the kitchen for a shared meal, dispelling any remaining tension.

What started as a frightful encounter transformed into a memory evening shared with someone who cared. As the night came to an end, they found comfort in a routine of sharing stories, laughter, and enjoying each other’s company, creating a deep sense of intimacy and connection.
