Chapter 769: The reward
"You’ve served me for years, and your contributions have been invaluable. Considering your years of service, I can release you if you wish. Resign and be with your sister indefinitely."
"It’s not what you think. I brought you in because you were a skilled professional. You adapted quickly, and you even introduced that woman to me."
"Now that Hera and I are on good terms and my plans have come to fruition, I’ve considered giving you your freedom back. I can’t reward June anymore, but given her efforts and yours, I believe you’ve earned this."
Dragon’s words, not long ago, replayed in Deborah’s mind like a broken record as she stood motionless in front of her sister’s grave. She slowly balled her hands into a tight fist, eyes barely blinking, tears running down her cheek.
According to the university, a top student in their university had met with an accident weeks before graduation. They reported that Tarrah was on her way home when her taxi got involved in a traffic collision. Both she and the taxi driver died.
Everyone thought it was unfortunate. Tarrah was a bright student, a role model. If this unfortunate event hadn’t happened, she would’ve graduated as the top student in her class. But alas...
"Tarrah..." Deborah’s mouth parted as she breathed a jagged breath. "I’m... sorry."
Deborah clenched her teeth, unable to stop tears streaming down her face. Her eyes remained on the gravestone where her sister’s name was engraved. The withering flowers proved this happened not long ago.
Not long ago...
Her fist shook as her heart thudded painfully. "This is my fault," she whispered, discerning all the emotions swelling in her chest.
Deborah should’ve known Dragon wouldn’t let her go so easily. She should’ve known it was strange for him to suggest retirement. After all, he wasn’t the type to let people go, especially people like Deborah who knew too many things. She should’ve known what sort of retirement he meant and the meaning behind the word "reward."
When he said he was letting her go and that she should be with her sister, Deborah should’ve known he meant he already planned to release her from this life.
"That psycho..." she clenched and ground her teeth, taking a deep breath as she started to feel suffocated. "I’m so freaking dumb to believe he was being sincere."
Her lips closed into a thin line. What Deborah did to Hera was something Dragon wouldn’t forgive. No wonder he was so calm. Dragon didn’t do anything to Deborah because he had already taken her sister’s life.
An eye for an eye.
Deborah touched Hera, and Dragon touched his sister. A fitting revenge.
"Hah..." After a moment, a short and dry laugh of mockery slipped past her lips. "Hah... ha ha. Is this what you really want, Dragon?"
A glint flickered across her eyes as a series of sinister laughter slipped past her gritted teeth. She rocked her head in understanding as madness and anger slowly consumed her grieving heart.
"Fine," she breathed out, tears still falling from the corner of her eyes. "Fine. Let’s kill each other."
Deborah closed her eyes, and tears pooled underneath her eyelids. She wiped her tears, and when she reopened her eyes, she dragged another deep breath and huffed it. She stared at her sister’s gravestone with bitterness before she forced herself to look away. When she turned around, Deborah stood still for a moment.
"I’m sorry, Tarrah," she whispered, lifting her sharp and swollen eyes. "After all these years... I still ruined everything. I’m sorry, but since you’re already there, I have nothing to lose anymore. I’ll kill him. For you and me... I will kill him."
Deborah glanced to the side, noticing a car that had been parked there since the beginning. When she looked to the other side, she caught more cars approaching. Her jaw tightened as she steeled her heart, marching away from her sister’s grave.
She knew it was impossible to reunite with Tarrah even in the afterlife. Tarrah was a smart and kind young lady. Unlike Deborah, who sold her soul to the devil long ago, the pearly gates of heaven would surely open their doors for her sister. Deborah, on the other hand, would surely go straight to hell.
Despite that, Deborah pledged to take Dragon with her.

"Oh? You mean Deborah?" Hera blinked innocently as she ate her meal in Leo’s room. The man was still on the bed with a tray over his lap while she ate at the small table in the room. "She resigned."
"Resigned?" Leo furrowed his brows, only to see Hera nod.
"Deb had been working since she was young. She worked hard and thus, she retired young." Hera smiled subtly as her eyes softened at the thought of Deborah. "She probably reunited with her sister by now. I’m so happy for her."
"I see." Leo nodded in understanding, setting his eyes down on the food. ’Didn’t that brunette say there’s no way out of here? Was she lying?’
Thanks to Deborah, Leo managed to pluck up the courage to bargain with Dragon. Although Leo believed Dragon agreed not because his plan was perfect, but because he found it amusing, he still had to give some level of credit to the woman.
"Good for her," he said with a short smile, and Hera nodded in agreement.
"I know, right?" Hera slowly turned her head to the small window near her spot. The side of her lips curled up as her eyes gleamed. "Deb is a nice person. So I’m glad to hear she was being rewarded for her hard work all these years. She deserved it."
Leo studied Hera’s side profile quietly, lips pressed into a thin line. When Hera looked back at him with a beaming smile, she said.
"Let’s eat?" she proposed, earning a short hum from him.
Unbeknownst to them, Deborah’s reward wasn’t as ideal as they thought it was. Deborah wasn’t enjoying her life with her sister. Instead, she was mourning the death of her sister and was in deep pain as she came to face the reality of how she wasted her youth. While Leo and Hera ate their meal peacefully, Deborah was fighting for her life, fueled with revenge.
