Chapter 760: I wonder... what’s in there?
[Two days later...]
Hera savored a cup of tea in the garden, immersed in the beauty around her while skillfully arranging flowers in the pavilion. Deborah, joining her, disrupted the serene atmosphere.
"You’re leaving?" Hera frowned as she looked at Deborah across from her. "Why? Did Frank scold you?"
"Haha. No." Deborah chuckled, shaking her head. "It’s not about a scolding. I’m retiring."
The lines on Hera’s forehead deepened, assessing Deborah’s beautiful face. "Retiring? But you seem too young for that."
"I’ve been working since I was sixteen, Hera." Deborah breathed out. "Countless odd jobs led me to this point. My life was dedicated to supporting my little sister, especially during her fragile health. Minimum wage wasn’t enough, and being deemed ’uneducated’ due to my incomplete education made finding stable employment difficult."
A subtle smile appeared on Deborah’s lips. "Your husband was the only one who trusted me and saw me for my character. If not for him, I don’t think I can provide properly for her. Thanks to him, I could afford my sister’s medical expenses and send her to prestigious schools."
Hera’s expression slowly relaxed as Deborah spoke words of gratitude toward Dragon. Although Deborah had more negative experiences and comments about the man, she had to acknowledge the positive impact he had on her life since joining the organization.
Being a person who used to sell her body for a living and being in a crime organization was the same. What mattered was that she persevered and lasted this long. Her younger sister was graduating now, and she was no longer as sickly as she used to be. Deborah had a significant amount of savings, so even if she retired now, she could still live in comfort.
"I’ve used this body for far too long and I can’t deny that I wasn’t tired anymore," she continued with a peaceful smile. "It’s surprising, but I’m glad that Frank supports me in this."
Hera slowly smiled affectionately as she moved her hand over the table, holding Deborah’s hand with both her hands. "I’m sorry, I didn’t know that. I spoke without thinking and that was selfish of me."
"It’s fine, Hera," Deborah reassured her. "I’m just telling you because I want to thank you."
"Hmm?" Hera’s brows rose, confused. "For what?"
"For waking up." Deborah pressed her lips into a thin line, maintaining her short smile. "And I’m sorry for everything."
"Deborah, I don’t understand why you’re thanking me and apologizing."
Deborah shook her head as she squeezed her hand. "It’s because you woke up, Frank is doing much better. I don’t have to worry about him anymore because you’re here." — to keep him busy. "Also, I’m saying sorry because I have to leave you." — to fend for yourself.
Deborah carefully chose her words, concealing some details to avoid complications. After careful consideration, she was convinced Hera had a lot of things to do with Dragon’s positive changes. Although she felt a little sorry that she would leave Hera on her own with a monster like him, Deborah wanted to graduate from this life.
Selfish? She had been one since the very beginning. Moreover, by the looks of it, as long as Hera doesn’t recover her memories, her relationship with Dragon would be much more bearable than one would expect. He wouldn’t hurt her if she behaved and made him happy. Well, Hera seemed happy with him, so there was nothing to feel sorry for so much.
This was for the better for everyone. So long as Dragon was happy, everyone would be.
"Well, I don’t think I deserve the thanks, but don’t apologize for doing something for yourself." Hera squeezed Deborah’s hand mildly. "Debi, I’ll miss you."
"I’ll keep in touch," said Deborah even though she knew for a fact she would cut off all connections she had from the underground. "I hope you continuously recover and live a happy life with your husband now."
"You too." Hera nodded. "I wish that you could now relax. I’m so proud of you, Debi."
"Thank you." Deborah chuckled as her eyes softened, looking down as she thought of her bright future. "I also hope I can now relax once I leave this place."
She slowly lifted her eyes to Hera, holding the latter’s gaze softly. Deborah offered to accompany Hera for the last time as she would leave tonight. Both women enjoyed their last bond together with Deborah, allowing herself to be a little more carefree around her.
After an hour or so, Deborah assisted Hera back to her room. She stayed for a bit to chat more, but when it was time, she had to bid her farewell. It wasn’t like Deborah felt so much attached to Hera to the point their farewell involved tears. She was simply happy to be able to live this life and not just try to survive and endure it daily.
"I’m so happy for her," Hera smiled subtly as she caressed the vase on the bedside table. She stood before it, admiring the flowers with soft eyes. "If only I knew, I would’ve given her flowers."
I’m so happy for her," Hera murmured, caressing a vase on her bedside table. Turning toward the window, she opened it, taking in a deep breath. Observing people in the distance heading toward the guest’s room, Hera pondered, "Isn’t that the way to the guest’s room? Debi mentioned an inspection, but why do people keep going there? Does inspection last this long?"
Questions about the bungalow near the main mansion filled Hera’s thoughts, sparking curiosity about its purpose.
Hera tilted her head to the side, humming a long tune, eyes on the people headed to the bungalow. Since waking up, Hera hadn’t had a proper house tour. There were still many areas of the mansion she hadn’t stepped foot in. But for some reason, she felt curious about that particular bungalow.
"Debi..." she murmured. "... it’s strange how she looks like she wanted me to drop the topic of the bungalow when I brought it up."
"I wonder... what’s in there?"
