Chapter 757: Vase

[Dragon’s Mansion]

"Deb!" Hera sprang up in front of the flower bed, waving excitedly at Deborah.

Deborah, who was walking on a loggia, stopped. She squinted her eyes as she turned her head toward the voice.

There stood Hera by the garden, adorned in a long dress with a hat perched gracefully on her head. The basket and gardening tools near Hera’s feet revealed her recent activity.

"Come here, quick!" Hera called, motioning for Deborah to join her.

"I’ll follow you in a bit," Deborah replied to the man walking beside her before hopping over the low concrete railing at Hera’s call. "If anyone asks, tell them Hera called me."

The man glanced at Hera and nodded. "Don’t force yourself to come if you can’t. I heard she can be a little demanding."

"Are you complaining?" Deborah arched a brow at the man. "Don’t forget who she is and her position in this family. Keep running your mouth, and see how it will fall even before you know it."

"Tsk." The man clicked his tongue, watching Deborah walk away. He shook his head and turned on his heel, heading toward his destination.

Meanwhile, as Deborah approached Hera, her eyes fell on the plucked flowers in the basket. When she stopped three steps from Hera and lifted her eyes to her, she noticed a different radiance and color on Hera’s face.

’What happened to her?’ Deborah wondered as Hera’s usual sickly appearance seemed transformed today.

"You’re gardening?" Deborah guessed with a smile.

"I’m going to arrange a vase," Hera corrected, picking up the basket and facing Deborah. "I’m planning to use these flowers and put them in Frank’s office. What do you think?"

Deborah glanced at the flowers again, pondering the relevance of such a gesture in Dragon’s office. Nonetheless, she smiled at Hera and nodded. "I think they’d make a pretty combination. What are you doing here all alone, by the way? Where’s your husband?"

"He left this morning."

"He came to see you?"

"Yes." Hera giggled. "He didn’t intend to wake me up, but I did. So, I knew he would be out for the day. I asked him if I could go to the garden, and he said yes."

"And he didn’t ask anyone to look after you?"

"I don’t know." Hera shrugged. "But when you didn’t come to my room, I asked the guard outside if I could go to the garden. He said yes but didn’t accompany me."

’That’s weird. Why didn’t he let anyone look after her? Does this mean he’s giving her enough freedom?’ Deep lines resurfaced between Deborah’s brows momentarily. ’Why, though?’

In retrospect, Dragon’s watchful eyes on Hera were more about preventing accidents during her activities than ensuring she wouldn’t escape. But right now, even if Deborah looked around, no one was watching Hera.

’He’s acting out of character,’thought Deborah, keeping her thoughts to herself. ’Not to mention, by the looks of it, she seems a little more alive than usual.’

Hera was still skinny, but she didn’t look pale or internally struggling.

"Are you okay?" Deborah asked, earning a questioning hum from Hera. "I mean, you might overexert yourself."

"No, not at all!" Hera grinned, raising her fist to show off her almost nonexistent muscle. "I woke up this morning a little more energized than usual. I feel like I can even lift you if I want to, but of course, that’s not true. How can I carry a grown person?"

"So, you’re okay?"

"Of course!" she nodded profusely. "The doctors also told me it’s fine and that I should do some light exercise. This is light exercise."

Hera wiped her forehead with the back of her hand. "Though I might faint if I continue to stay here. It’s a little hot today. Help me, Deb. I want to arrange these flowers before evening. Frank told me he’d be back at around nine, and it’s already three in the afternoon."

"Oh..." Deborah rocked her head as she glanced at the basket in Hera’s hands.

"Oh, wait. Do you have something important to do?" asked Hera curiously. "Sorry, I just felt excited and didn’t think you might have something else important to do. If you aren’t available, then that’s fine."

"No, it’s okay." Deborah offered a short smile, taking two steps to lessen the gap between them. "It’s not really important. I’m sure everyone will not mind whether I come or not. Give that to me; let me carry it for you."

Deborah reached for the basket of flowers from Hera’s hands without a second hesitation. The latter smiled brightly, allowing Deborah to take the basket.

"Let’s go in?" Deborah cast her a look, and she nodded excitedly.

With that being said, Deborah and Hera made their way inside the mansion. As they did, Hera couldn’t help but turn her head in the direction Deborah seemed to head before she called for her.

The mansion was surrounded by acres of land, and near the mansion stood another small house. Hera had seen it before, but never got the chance to ask.

"By the way, Deb, what is that house for?" asked Hera as she trod carefully through the walkway, head turned to the bungalow that stood on the same land as the main residence.

Deborah glanced in the direction Hera was looking. "That’s the guest house."

"Oh? A guest house?" Hera set her curious eyes back to Deborah. "Why are you headed there? Does Frank have a guest? If so, should I make more vases for the guests?"

"You don’t have to." Deborah smiled. "There’s no guest, so don’t worry. I am simply headed there for an inspection. After all, even if there’s no guest, it still needs regular maintenance. So, it’s not that important."

"Oh, I see..." Hera rocked her head in understanding, keeping her curious eyes on Deborah’s side profile longer than she should have.

Sensing that Hera was still looking, Deborah cast her a side-eye. "It’s not important, Hera."

"Okay." Hera pressed her lips and nodded, continuing on their way to the mansion in silence.
