Chapter 749: Leo’s fate sealed
Deborah’s role in the organization involved running background checks, spying, and gathering information from individuals who might pose a threat to Dragon or be useful in some way. However, since Dragon hadn’t provided her with specific orders beyond obtaining information, she was well aware of a man named Leo Wu, a superstar who had recently piqued Dragon’s interest due to a call from Hera.
Despite extensive research, there was no apparent connection between Hera and Leo. Even after a thorough investigation, they were certain Leo wasn’t one of Hera’s covert agents deployed for a mission. Deborah initially thought Dragon had dropped the matter, dismissing it as a simple dialing error.
As she stood by the bedside, observing the man lying on it, she realized she was mistaken. Dragon never let go of something once it had caught their attention, regardless of whether others considered it insignificant. If it bothered Dragon, he wouldn’t cease until all the questions in his intricate mind were resolved.
"What the hell?" she whispered, her brows furrowed. "It’s really him."
"Ugh..."
Her brows rose when Leo emitted a sudden grunt. He weakly opened his eyes, squinting at the figure standing beside the bed. As his vision cleared, deep lines appeared between his brows. Instead of asking the most natural question a person like him would ask, the question that flew out of his mouth was something else.
"What do you want?" was the first question he asked, his voice tinged with panic.
"Is that your first question?" she replied, realizing that this man had likely already encountered Dragon. Inquiring about her identity would be futile, and she had no intention of revealing it.
Leo looked away, finding himself in the same room where he had been confined. Propping his elbow against the mattress, teeth clenched, he exerted every bit of energy to sit up.
"You should stay in bed," she monotoned, watching him struggle. "I’m certain you’ve been injected with something to keep you there. All attempts to resist are futile."
She wanted to say more, emphasizing that once Dragon had taken him in, leaving freely was highly unlikely. This was Dragon’s stronghold — escaping alive was a challenge for anyone, including her.
"You don’t have to tell me that..." Leo panted as he rolled to the side, determined to leave the bed. "I don’t know you people... but I’m not just going to stay here and wait."
"Fool," she whispered, watching him crawl out of bed despite his weakened state. After a moment, she bent over to grab his shoulder, gently pulling Leo back to lie flat on his back.
"I can’t tell you where you are because ignorance is better for you, and I don’t know what Dragon wants from you," she said, her knee resting on the bed’s edge, her face hovering over him. "Stay on the bed."
Leo’s breath hitched as he assessed the eyes staring down at him. "Then... what do you want?" he asked with quivering lips. "I already said what I know. There’s no need to keep me in here."
For a moment, Deborah didn’t answer because she didn’t know the answer herself. She had come out of curiosity, and upon recognizing him, she stayed to contemplate.
"I want nothing," she breathed out as she pushed herself away, sitting on the bed’s edge. Deborah lifted her foot, resting her leg over the other, arms folded underneath her chest. "Just know that compared to the man who ordered to bring you here, I am much saner."
Leo stared warily at her back, sensing that she didn’t exude the same danger as the man who had been there before. Still, he remained on guard.
"Please," he whispered desperately. "I don’t know what I did. That phone call... you can try to recover our conversation if you can. But I’m telling you the truth. I don’t know anything about that man’s wife. I am not his lover or whatever you think I was to her."
"No one thinks you’re her lover," she replied nonchalantly, glancing over her shoulder. "And even if you’re telling the truth, it’s too late, Mr. Superstar."
"What...?"
"Dragon — I mean, that man — already brought you here. He won’t let you go, even if you cry tears of blood. And even if you beg on your knees, it’ll be futile." Deborah looked away, sighing. "Anyone he takes in can never leave this place alive. Considering you’re a popular celebrity, he won’t risk letting you talk. Unless he wants to become popular, which I doubt. He dislikes unnecessary trouble and unwanted attention."
Leo’s eyes shook as his heart thudded against his chest, processing the woman’s words. Although her language wasn’t his first, he perfectly understood the message.
"Are you saying... I’m... going to die here?" he forced out a breath, his voice sounding ragged.
Deborah didn’t answer, nor did she look back at him. Her silence conveyed the answer clearly. Leo’s heart sank as he slowly shifted his shaking eyes to the ceiling. His lips quivered as he opened and closed them, his voice stuck in his throat.
What sort of people were these? One wrong phone call, and it could cost him his life. How could this happen to him?
"Why... is this happening to me?" His voice was barely above a whisper, but it echoed in the room.
Deborah glanced over her shoulder, her lips drawn into a thin line. "That’s a question I used to ask back then," she replied quietly before pushing herself up. Turning around, she faced him with a stern look.
"If I were you, just rest. Don’t do anything stupid like running away or hurting yourself," she advised sincerely before leaving. "The only advice I can give you is to think of ways to be useful. That might prolong your life."
Having said her piece, Deborah left the room. She had no business with him, and Leo could only stare at the closed door with blank eyes, his mind filled with fear and confusion about the bleak outlook she had presented for his future.
