Chapter 734: She’s become an idiot.
Deborah’s pupils slowly dilated as her mouth fell open. Her attention was fixed on Hera’s back as the latter slowly took off her dress in front of the tub. She had always known Hera was barely skin and bones, but she didn’t expect that underneath her usual clothes, her body was covered with bruises. There was barely an area of her body that wasn’t bruised; it was as if Hera had gone through a fraternity initiation.
"So warm..." Hera whispered in delight as she dipped her foot in the warm tub. A satisfied smile turned up on her face, holding the rims as she raised her other foot. Slowly, she bent her knees until her entire body was covered with the warmth of the water.
"Thank you," she expressed once she settled in the tub, turning her head to the toilet where Deborah sat. "The maids wouldn’t allow me to take a bath all on my own. I’m surprised they didn’t make a fuss when you told them you’d help me."
Deborah’s lips parted for a moment, but her voice didn’t come out of her throat. All she could do for a moment was stare at Hera with blank eyes.
"What happened to your body?" she blurted out after a moment, making Hera raise her brows.
"Oh, this?" Hera instinctively placed her hand on her bruised shoulder. "I don’t know. It just appears for no reason. I easily bruise."
’No reason?’Knowing that Dragon wouldn’t physically harm her now, Deborah could only think of one possible logic behind her bruises.
It was the effect of drugs on Hera’s body. After all, even though Hera woke up after years of being in a coma, Dragon would still make her take different sorts of drugs. Not to mention, to erase her memories, they electrocuted her brain with just enough shock not to kill her.
’She’s no better than a guinea pig,’ Deborah thought, feeling a little sorry for Hera. ’I know I’m the one who tried to kill her years ago, but this... is sickening.’
Deborah’s action back then originated from the guilt she felt for June, mixed with dissatisfaction that Dragon never told them about his real plan. She had no personal grudge against Hera, and she never felt sorry for what she had done to her, either.
But now, something within Deborah was tugging her heart to the point she could barely breathe.
"Deborah?" Hera called, raising her brows curiously. "Are you okay?"
Deborah blinked as the side of her face twitched as she forced a smile. "Do you need help?"
"I’m okay." Hera smiled subtly, taking a handful of water to wash her shoulder. "I can do this all on my own."
"You should stop taking the drugs they give you."
"Huh?" Deep lines appeared between Hera’s brows. "I’m sorry? I didn’t hear you."
Deborah’s lips quivered as they parted. "Nothing," she breathed out and smiled. "It’s nothing. I’m just mumbling. You should wash quickly, else you might catch a cold."
"Yes."
With that being said, Hera washed her body delicately to not get another bruise on her body. Meanwhile, Deborah kept her gaze on the woman dipped in the tub.
’He’s killing her...’she thought. ’After keeping her alive all these years, he’s going to kill her slowly and painfully... what a sick bastard indeed.’
Deborah looked away from Hera’s direction and folded her arms underneath her chest. Her eyes slowly fell on the floor while her mind drifted elsewhere.
’Why... did he keep me by his side when he already figured out what I did to Hera?’
One thing about Dragon was that he was insane, the most twisted of all, and the most unpredictable she had ever met in this lifetime. Deborah knew she was playing with fire the second she realized Dragon had already found out her secret. However, she couldn’t help but wonder what Dragon was up to and why he hadn’t killed her, even when he could’ve done so easily without lifting a finger.
Deborah slowly shifted her eyes, and her gaze instantly lingered on Hera’s back. ’I can’t believe I’m saying this, but she’s better off dead without her memories. I wonder if there’s a way for her to regain her memories?’
The thought was tempting, but then again, Deborah knew her hands were tied. She couldn’t possibly walk into the infirmary and bribe the doctors attending to Hera. There wasn’t a single person in this place who wasn’t moving under Dragon’s order.
’It’ll take a miracle for her to recover her memories.’ She pinched the bridge of her nose in distress. ’For now, she’s useless.’
"Hera, you should finish up," Deborah remarked. "Dragon—Frank will scold me if you catch a cold."
Hera, who was sitting in the tub, didn’t react. She heard her, but her eyes remained on the water’s surface.
"This is the first time... I saw my face," she whispered, touching her face, realizing her cheeks were hollowed out, her complexion was pale, and the dark bags under her eyes were darker than she expected.
"What?" Deborah arched a brow. "What are you mumbling about over there?"
Hera didn’t answer as her fingertips reached the corner of her eyes. She then moved her hand away to look at the back of her hand. She didn’t realize it before, but now that she was paying attention, her hands just looked a little dead. It was like bones covered with skin. No fats or muscles within.
"Hera," Deborah called once more, and when she got no response, she marched toward Hera. She held the latter’s shoulder, pulling her back a bit so Hera would face her. The moment they locked eyes with each other, Deborah furrowed her brows.
"Why are you crying?" she asked, catching another teardrop rolling down Hera’s cheek.
"I’m..." Hera’s voice shook while the other woman held her breath on instinct. Much to Deborah’s dismay, her expectations for the miracle that could happen soon disappeared upon hearing Hera’s dilemma.
"... ugly. Deborah, how can Frank look at me so affectionately with this face?"
’Yep. She’s useless. No wonder he enjoyed accompanying her. She’s become an idiot.’
