Chapter 359: [Bonus Chapter] Twin flames
VOLUME 3: TWIN FLAMES
PROLOGUE
A child with huge and thick eyeglasses sat in the corner of a vacant room. The place was dusty, with some used beer cans and condoms scattered around. Despite the flimsy emergency light in the other corner to give light in the room, the child could see the spiderwebs decorating the enclosed space.
The child, who was around the age of seven or eight, hugged his knees. His eyes underneath his thick glasses that had a broken lens lowered, biting his bottom lip to stop himself in an attempt to give himself courage. However, being held captive in a place he was not familiar with was enough to fill his young heart with dread.
’Mom...’ he whispered in his heart, flinching when the door creaked.
The boy instinctively peeked over his folded arms that were on his bent knees. As soon as he saw the person coming inside the room, the life in his eyes glowed.
"Uncle!" the boy unfolded his arm and grinned. "You came!"
The man donning a black fitted suit smiled, squatting down in front of the boy. He raised a hand and ruffled the boy’s hair.
"I told you," he said. "That Uncle will always come to you when you need me."
The smile on the boy’s face stretched as relief surged in his heart. He was saved, he thought. From the time those masked men ambushed the car he was in and took him against his will, the boy didn’t shed a single tear. He didn’t want to show weakness, just like what his grandma would always tell him. However, now that his uncle was right before him, a layer of tears coated his eyes.
"Oh, boy." The man smiled subtly as his eyelids drooped. "Don’t cry, Dom. Everything will be okay."
"Uncle..." the boy, the young Dominic Zhu, wiped his tears with his little arms. His thick eyeglasses moved up a bit as he did so.
Another minute went by before the young Dominic calmed himself down. Even at this tender age, he understood how dangerous this situation was for him and his uncle.
"Uncle Leon, are you with Dad?" he asked, looking up at him again.
"Well, your dad is looking elsewhere." The man, Leon Zhu, Dominic’s father’s twin brother, maintained a gentle smile.
"How did you find me, Uncle?"
"I had to look everywhere." Leon shrugged. "Good thing I found this place."
"I see..." Dominic sighed in relief, not doubting a word from this man.
Leon was Lionel’s twin brother. His father and uncle had a great relationship, as that was what it appeared to the young Dominic. Unlike their relatives, who always found each other a competition, both Lionel and Leon were different. Lionel stood at the helm of the family while Leon supported his brother in the shadows.
Both brothers were a team, and thus, Dominic trusted his uncle.
Leon was like a father to him as well. Dominic was even closer to his uncle than his own father. Therefore, the relief in his heart seeing that Leon came to save him was beyond words.
"We should go, Uncle." Dominic huffed, mustering the courage that he kept failing earlier. He tilted his head to the side, glancing at the only entrance and exit of this abandoned room. "Once the masked men come back, they will hurt you."
"Right." Leon breathed out heavily, looking back at the shut door. "But Dom, I can’t take you yet."
"Huh?"
Leon slowly faced the little boy. "It’ll be too dangerous if we get out of here now. Those guys were just outside and if they saw us, there’s no telling what they’ll do to us. So, you have to stay here for a bit while we’re waiting for backup."
Dominic pressed his lips into a thin line, assessing his uncle’s countenance. From face value, it seemed Leon was telling the truth. There was also some logic in his remarks.
However...
"Uncle, how did you get in?" Dominic blurted out, remembering how smoothly Leon came in as if he was not in danger whatsoever.
Even at this very second, it didn’t seem Leon was in a rush or panic. If anything, Leon was calm as ever. One could say it was because Leon wanted to keep a sound mind in such a dangerous situation. But then again, how would he explain his presence in this place without getting caught if the abductors were just outside?
"About that..." Leon ran his tongue across his inner cheek. "... I just snuck in while they weren’t looking?"
Dominic gulped, hearing it echo in his ear.
"Just... behave for now, alright? Your abductors are ruthless people. If we do something that can anger them, who knows what they’ll do?" Leon sighed, ruffling his nephew’s hair again. "I need to find a way to buy us some time and negotiate with them. Until your dad comes, stay here."
Leon pressed his lips and smiled as he retrieved his hand from his nephew. "Do you trust me, Dom? I’ll get you out of here. I promise."
"But I’m scared..."
"I know, my boy." Another sigh slipped past Leon’s nostrils, keeping his lips tight shut. "Me too. I’m scared, but we have to stay strong and calm, okay? I came all by myself and they’ll soon find out I found you. So, before they can do anything, I need to buy us some time."
"Don’t worry," he added. "I already notified your father that I found the place. I’m sure he’s already on his way with the entire military with him."
Dominic kept his lips drawn into a tight slash, nodding. His uncle ruffled his hair once again before he pushed himself up. Leon turned around and strutted away while Dominic kept his gaze on the man’s retreating figure.
’No,’told the child to himself, shaking his head as he hugged his knees again. ’Uncle is here to save me. He had nothing to do with this situation and is telling the truth.’
Dominic was always proud to be called a genius, having a voice in their family, even at this tender age. However, right at this second, he denied what his mind was telling him and turned a blind eye to the seed of doubt that was growing in his young, innocent heart.
Leon would never betray him. Never.
