Chapter 1131: Welcome Back to your post, Elliot.
"I’m going to catch her, but I can only do so if you let me get out of here to do my job. I am not a traitor and if treason is upholding the Interpol’s mission and purpose, then I’m guilty as charged."
A moment of silence descended in the empty conference hall as if considering Elliot’s remarks. The man had been confined here since he crashed his own funeral, going through a series of interrogations. And all the purpose of the investigation was to find out where he was all the time he disappeared.
Elliot’s lips opened again, knowing he was close to getting his position back. But before he could say anything, the door suddenly flung open.
"President!" a man panicked, rushing inside the conference room and straight to Elliot. "We sighted the Reapers headed in here. We sent out most of our manpower to the 11th District."
Elliot clenched his teeth, shifting his sharp eyes to the empty seats. "Underestimating Hera Cruel will ruin everything we worked hard for years. I need to get out of here and do my job. Unless you want this headquarters to fall into the Reapers’ hands."
Another wave of silence reigned in the empty conference room until a woman spoke.
"President Dunkell is right," said the woman, making others furrow their brows as it sounded different. "He had been after felons like Hera Cruel. If there was someone in here who knew her more than anyone, that would be him."
"Who is that?" one of the voices remarked.
Elliot scanned the devices on the long table, but it was hard to detect which device that the woman was talking from with everyone speaking all at once.
"Who is that?" after another second, another woman’s voice was heard. "Are you all pretending not to know her? Or... you guys actually don’t know someone has been sitting in your meetings?"
This time, however, Elliot’s breath hitched, as it was a voice he was so familiar with.
Hera.
"Oh?" None of the devices light up, making it even more impossible to distinguish where Hera was speaking. "It’s suddenly so quiet. Very well. Since it’s so quiet, allow me to use this time to send my greetings to Madam Ursula."
The other woman let out a short chuckle, but by the sound of it, she didn’t seem too pleased.
"You didn’t expect me here, did you?" Hera mocked. "My goodness. How come? You’ve been messing up with me and it’s so hard to have communication with you. I went out of my way just to reach out."
There was another brief silence before the other woman spoke. "I’m just surprised it took you this long, little missy."
"Well, I’m sorry. It took me an overnight stay in the prison to reconsider," Hera remarked playfully. "I realized I’d die of boredom in prison and you might just keep me busy for a while."
"Arrogant, as I heard."
"And a coward, as I heard."
The other woman didn’t retort at Hera’s quick response. Hera, on the other hand, let out a short chuckle.
"Dearest General Assembly and Madam Karen, let me ask you one thing." Hera cleared her throat. "What do you think is my plan at the moment, hmm? Getting arrested and silencing a person who is proudly claiming to be me? Bombing the Interpol Headquarters? Or heading straight to your homes and maybe eating whatever’s in your fridge? All the above? Or none of those?"
"President Elliot Dunkell, go back to your post. We’re disconnecting." A member of the General Assembly kept his remark short and precise. "Deal with her and make your call."
With that being said, members of the meeting disconnected one after another. It was only right to disconnect, knowing Hera Cruel or that other woman who joined the meeting unannounced might be stealing their data.
Moreover, Hera threatened them.
Who knows? Members of the Reapers were already on their way to their homes? Or perhaps they were already there. After that meeting, all the members of the General Assembly immediately sent their orders to check their families and homes. They couldn’t just shrug off Hera’s threats because they knew what that demoness was capable of.
As the people outside the conference quickly tried to ease their worries, Elliot remained frozen in the empty conference room.
"Madam." Hera’s voice was heard. "Or whoever you are. I hope your bedroom has really advanced security system because if not, you better start losing sleep from now on."
"I’ll look forward to the day you find me," said the other woman with confidence. "I hope my hair won’t turn gray until then."
"Oh, no. That would be rude of me," Hera chuckled. "Wait for me. I’ll be there on the shore in a minute."
The other woman didn’t answer anymore before Elliot heard her disconnect. Hera chuckled playfully once more before she spoke again.
"Welcome back to your post, President Dunkel," she mused. "My men will be there to celebrate your reinstatement. Don’t blow it up. And before you assume, I haven’t found her. It’s just a bluff and obviously, she didn’t buy it."
Elliot furrowed his brows, wondering if that was safe for her to say that. Considering this meeting was recorded, that was akin to shooting himself in the foot. But then again, this was Hera. She wouldn’t blatantly say that if she knew it would put him in a tight position.
She needed him, after all.
"That..." the assistant who announced the emergency furrowed his brows. "President Dunkel, why would..."
Elliot unhesitatingly took out his small pistol and shot the assistant under his jaw and straight to his skull. The body landed with a heavy thud while Elliot gazed down at it.
"She said that, knowing you are here because that means you can’t get out of here alive," he muttered, walking over the body. Elliot searched the body, unfazed by the blood crawling underneath them. When he found the assistant’s phone, Elliot smashed it on the floor.
"Hah," he let out a scoff, picking up a small golden chip he found on the phone. It was the same one Hera showed him before he left the Reapers.
Elliot clasped the chip securely before he rose to his feet. "That’s one out of who knows how many moles this agency has," he whispered, marching outside the conference room to welcome the party Hera sent him.
This was not in their plans, but Elliot was certain of one thing. Hera wouldn’t have sent a party just to display his incompetence right after his reinstatement. But rather, a gift to secure his spot.
"Send out the rest of our soldiers," Elliot announced as soon as he stepped out of the conference room. "Let’s welcome the Reapers to their doom."
