Chapter 1103: Walk with me

"Say... do you know anyone who scares Dimitri?"

Both men looked at Hera with furrowed eyes. They couldn’t see her properly with the dimness of the room, but based on her tone, it sounded like a genuine question.

"You didn’t torture us, knowing that would be a waste of time because we won’t talk," Romnick weakly hissed. "What made you think you’d get an answer just because you asked?"

"I’m not talking to you, Paula. Pick up your rosary and start praying. You’re more amusing whenever you do that." Hera shifted her eyes to the other man. "Do you know?"

Romnick scoffed, moving his eyes to his lackey. "He won’t talk."

"You, Paula, think he won’t because...?" Hera cocked her head to the side. "You chose this life and pledged your life to the wrong person. But not everyone is as foolish as you."

She snapped her eyes back to the other person. "I’m sure you’re smart enough to figure out why you’re in here and not dead."

The man lowered his head, peeking in Romnick’s direction. It might be dark, but his eyes had already grown used to this darkness. Therefore, he could tell Romnick was looking at him.

"Dimitri is already dead," said the man. "His fight is over. There’s no use in holding on to a dead man’s ambition."

"You...!" Romnick hissed, tempted to jump to the other man but didn’t. It wasn’t like they were shackled or bound by anything. Matter of fact, they were quite free if that door was left open. However, Romnick wasn’t so confident that Hera didn’t lay any trap.

"I don’t know much about Dimitri," said the other man, shifting his attention to Hera. "His associates and clients were all top secrets. Even some officers don’t know about them — I’m not saying this just to save Romnick, but Dimitri trusts his men very too little."

"I’m sure you know how the organization operates," he continued. "Your best bet to get more information is Dragon. Though I’m not sure if you kept him alive after everything he had done."

"He’s alive... barely. Can’t wait for him to wake up." Hera shrugged. "Anything else you’re not telling me? You better say it now if I were you."

The man drew a deep breath, running his tongue across his inner cheek. Romnick, on the other hand, clenched his teeth.

"What will I get if I say anything?" the man returned. "Will you let me go?"

"Depends on how useful the information was."

"You won’t kill me?"

Hera shrugged. "That depends too."

"If you won’t let me go or will keep looming over me, then will you take me in?" the man suggested, his voice shaky but determined.

His suggestion made her arch a brow. "You want to join me?"

"I can be an asset."

"Like a cannon fodder?" Hera nodded. "Fine. Now? Let me hear what you got."

The man didn’t answer immediately as he mustered his courage and rummaged through his memories. "Like I said, Dimitri’s associates were kept a top secret. However, he once mentioned a madam."

"A madam?"

"It could be a code or an alias or just a diversion," the man clarified. "But from what I noticed, Dimitri was wary of this madam. I also overheard him once talking to someone."

"And?"

"I think he mentioned about not wanting the madam’s help. It was confusing and strange, but if I guessed correctly, he never saw this madam as his ally. So, he was conflicted and adamant about not wanting her help." The more he talked, the more natural his confession became. "Is this helpful enough?"

Hera didn’t answer, leaning her back against the wall. She played with her hands in between her bent knees.

"Madam, huh?" she murmured, furrowing her brows slightly. "That’s... new."

"We never saw her nor we ever heard her voice," the man repeated in case she missed that part. "So, this madam could actually be a mister."

"It’s a woman, you idiot," Hera asserted, looking at the guy with disinterest. "Have you ever met a mob boss or even a foot soldier call themselves madam unless they were gay?"

She rolled her eyes. "Men in the underground call themselves any silly nicknames — even embrace an idiotic alias for their own self-identities. But you’d never see Birdman hide himself under the name Butterfly."

The man lowered his head and cleared his throat out of embarrassment. She was right. If Dane called his associates a madam, then that means it was a woman. He missed the idea because he intended to get on Hera’s good side.

"A madam, huh?" Hera hummed, reviewing her memories of the past. ’Nothing comes to mind. I missed this person? Or had she hid from me all this time?’

It could also be that she didn’t know this madam because she didn’t have any personal problems with Dimitri in the past. But then again, this person probably knew Dragon as well.

"Interesting," Hera smiled subtly. "A powerful person for Dimitri to have second thoughts, and Dragon to ignore... she must be very powerful."

Hera could just ignore everything and treat this case as a new one. A problem that might keep her busy for the next few years. However, her patience might not last that long. Therefore, she wanted to believe this "madam" had always been watching in the shadows.

Who knows?

At this point, Hera could see all the threads of life attached to her every pore that connects to someone else. Everything was connected. Hera, Dominic, Dane, Dragon, even Primo... everything was connected. So, it wouldn’t be surprising if this madam was one way or another connected to them as well.

"Well done, Andie." Hera smiled. "I knew coming here and bonding with my besties was a great idea."

Once Hera said that, she immediately pushed herself to sit up. Seeing this, the lackey cleared his throat and panicked.

"Are you going to let me go?" he asked. "I mean, am I coming with you now?"

Hera squinted her eyes. "Well, a promise is a promise. Come here," she crooked a finger and then pointed it at Romnick. "You too, Paula. Walk with me."
