Chapter 1084: Hera’s little secret

"Yet, she did none of those because she knew that keeping you close also means taking away your freedom. It’s not that you couldn’t change anything, you changed her."

How Dominic could wish to retort Heaven’s remarks. How he wished he could say "he regrets being the cause of Hera’s change." Because if Hera didn’t change, then they would have been together. Instead of talking to Heaven, he would’ve been talking to Hera. Instead of holding a divorce paper, he would have been spending sleepless nights trying to help Hera concoct a flawless plan.

But he couldn’t.

Because they were nothing but his selfish wishes. Ridiculous, but Dominic wasn’t anything better than Heaven. He was just as bad, or probably worse parent than her. The only real parent here was Hera, who put those innocent children’s well-being before hers.

"Why are you telling me this?" Dominic inquired under his breath. "Yes, I couldn’t change the outcome, but I did change her. Was I supposed to feel good about that?"

"I’m saying if you’ve decided to wait, then do so." Heaven smiled subtly. "Like I said, I shared memories, body, organs, and everything with her. Not just in her body, but also in this body. It’s ironic how traumatic Hera’s memory was, but the memories she had as Heaven were the stark contrast."

"She might not come back, or she might. I don’t want to give you false hope. All I’m trying to say is if you wait, it’s better to expect it might be for naught," she explained. "If you do, then I wouldn’t have to worry about you."

"Haha." Dominic shook his head. "How can you worry about me when you don’t even care? It’s too late for you to act as a hypocrite."

"I never said I care about you. But I do care about Hera." Heaven smacked her lips. "I owe her my life — everything. She fixed my life and even when I didn’t want or know how to do it on my own, she still went out of her way just because she knew me."

"I’m not divorcing you just because I think it will make me the hero. I’m doing it for myself and because... Hera is their real mother." Her eyes slowly fell on the divorce papers in his hand. "Those papers were my first step in doing something for myself. It might hurt Basti and Miracle, but I believe we’ll only hurt them more if we’re together."

"And talking to you, speaking my mind, not hiding the fact that I don’t like you, is also part of that first step," she continued as she met his eyes. "Also, I’m sorry for everything, Dom. That night..."

This time, hesitation laced her voice. Clasping the sheet over her lap, she took a deep breath and looked back at him.

"I’m sorry for that night," she huffed in one go. "I was high, but I should’ve listened when you refused. I’m sorry for blaming you for everything, even when I know the reason we were in that situation years ago was because I couldn’t stop myself."

"Sue me if you want. I’ll take it. I’ll pay for what I did wrong. Though a little late, at this point, I simply want to correct myself and my life. Be it in prison or somewhere else. I want to start again."

Saying those things to him somehow felt like someone pulled out a splint in her throat. It wasn’t like she expected him not to do that. But Heaven sincerely wanted to start anew, correct her wrongs, and move on with her life.

"If I’m better, then maybe I’ll become a tiny bit better for Basti and Miri," she whispered, eyes softening. "It might be a little late for that, but I still want to try."

Dominic assessed Heaven quietly, keeping his thoughts to himself. It wasn’t like he completely believed her. Her talent was acting, and she was very good at it. However, he was hopeful that this was progress.

"What happened that night is something I’ve already come to terms with," he said, sighing. "Not just because we ended up having Basti, but because I met her through you. You shouldn’t get any credit for it, but I’d rather make peace with that night instead of my children carrying whatever title you’d get if you were put behind bars."

"Thank you."

"Don’t. Because if we didn’t have Basti, I would’ve pressed charges even if it’s humiliating for me."

Heaven nodded, forcing a smile.

"Anyway, I will review the divorce papers and add more clauses. Also, in case there are any custody concerns here, I want sole custody. You can have visitation rights, but my kids stay with me." Dominic raised the papers. "If that’s not fine with you, then I’ll make your life hard."

With that being said, Dominic pushed himself from his chair and turned his back on her. As he walked away, Heaven kept her gaze on his retreating figure.

"Dom," she called, watching him slow down. "Do you think... it’s possible that we can still create a healthy environment for the children?"

Dominic raised his brows and glanced over his shoulders. "They never had a healthy environment to begin with. At least, before Hera."

"Don’t you want to stay?" she returned, this time making him look back at her. "You’re in a comatose. I’m sure you didn’t have so much work to do aside from crying in your room, longing for Hera."

Heaven pursed her lips while its corners curled up. "I’m free to talk. We don’t like each other enough to stop ourselves so we wouldn’t hurt each other’s feelings. However, we also, somewhat, understood each other. Moreover, I don’t think we have ever had a proper conversation since we got married."

"If we’re going to be separated, isn’t it better if we stay... friends?" she added. "It might be a little late for that, but there’s never too late for anything if only we try, right?"

"I’ll send these documents tomorrow with my signature," was his reply, taking another step to leave her alone. However, when Dom reached the door, he halted.

Heaven raised her brows, tilting her head a little. Slowly, Dominic looked back at her.

"You mentioned you lived in her mind," he remarked, earning curiosity from her. "Do you remember an incident that took place about a chubby little boy getting abducted by his uncle?"

As soon as Heaven heard that, a smile turned up on her face. She didn’t know that part of her memory when she was in Hera’s body, but when she returned to her own body, she connected the two.

"She threw a big tantrum when they left you," she quipped, watching him return to the chair.

"And?"

"She kept checking abandoned places and containers, hoping you got yourself in trouble again." Heaven shrugged while Dominic chuckled mildly. "She didn’t tell anyone, but she actually was pissed at the fact she took home kids that weren’t that specific kid. It’s one of her little secrets."

"If this reaches some particular ears, it won’t be good."

"It’s also the reason she was too fond of Fig." She smiled widely while he looked up at her. "Fig reminds her of that kid. From a different angle, it’s alarming. But she learned how to cook good food, not because she doesn’t trust the food served to her. It’s because she wanted to make sure Fig stayed in ’shape.’"

"Haha. Now he was unstoppable. Chewing was practically his exercise."

Heaven and Dominic talked, and the more they did, the more they felt comfortable. Before they knew it, they were uncovering Hera’s little secrets one by one, even criticizing her sanity sometimes. In a way, even for a moment, it helped Dominic escape his misery.

Talking to someone who knew Hera deeply, and not just the leader of the Reapers, helped.
