Chapter 1083: She is the real monster among all the other monsters

Meanwhile...

"You barely call your son, but you got time to call a lawyer for this?" Dominic gazed at the paper Heaven handed to her. "I’m almost amazed."

"Being a witch is my talent. No need to sound so condescending about it," Heaven returned, her tone and aura giving off determination. "This should’ve happened a long time ago. Matter of fact, the marriage shouldn’t have happened in the first place. I’m sure we can agree on that."

Dominic slowly lifted his gaze on her, assessing the assertive look plastered on her face. Heaven already healed up from her injuries and from what he heard, she could get discharged and continue her recovery at home. Despite the assassination attempt she faced not long ago, he was surprised she wasn’t hiding in the sheet. Instead, she looked determined.

"You’re a coward in many things, but whenever you’re divorcing me, you’re always... determined," he remarked, setting his eyes on the divorce papers to skim through them.

"Does that hurt you?"

"Not one bit."

"Dom," Heaven called, but he didn’t bother looking at her. "We can’t continue this marriage just because of Basti and Miracle."

Dominic didn’t speak, keeping his attention on the clauses in the papers.

"We don’t love each other; you love someone else and I..."

"Leo Wu," he remarked, making her nod.

"Yes, I love him still and will always do."

This time, Dominic slowly lifted his eyes at her. "Heaven, you don’t have to sound like you have to convince me. You only beat me to it, but divorcing you is part of my plan. However, I don’t want you to think you’re making a big sacrifice for me or anyone. I’m not going to thank you for divorcing me, just so my children won’t blame me for leaving their mother."

"You already abandoned us a long time ago. At least, you’ve abandoned Basti even before he was born," he continued in the same cold and flat tone. "And even now that you got the chance, you went back to treating him the same. You’re the worst."

Heaven swallowed the lump that appeared in her throat, rocking her head in understanding. A thin layer of tears covered her eyes, but she didn’t cry. What Dominic said was something she already realized a lot sooner. Or rather, it was almost the same as what Hera said, just worded more kindly.

"I know," she forced out her words, her voice barely cracked. "I know, Dom. Everything you’re saying, I know."

"I hate you for it," he added, even if it was clear Heaven didn’t need to hear more berating. "Even if you know, I still had to say it."

His jaw tightened as the papers in his hands crumpled, staring at the same face he used to look at every waking day and the face he loved seeing every night. Dominic’s and Hera’s separation was already hard, but it was even harder when he had to see this face as well.

This face, whom Hera wore all this time.

Whether or not he wanted to, he couldn’t help but remember his wife. He couldn’t help but remember all the memories, the laughs, the arguments — petty or not — and every single detail about her. Harsh as it may, but even though Dominic knew the woman in Heaven’s body was someone else, he created memories with that face. That was the unbending and harsh truth.

"Anyway." Dominic cleared his throat and drew a deep breath, setting his focus on the paper again. "I’ll sign these documents once I go over them thoroughly. I need my lawyer’s approval —"

"You’re still in a coma," Heaven spoke before he could finish his sentence. "I saw it in the news. People know you’re still in a coma. You might lose your position."

"That’s none of your business."

"Do you think she’ll come back?" she asked, watching Dominic’s reaction. "She won’t. I’ve been in her body and shared her mind and memories. If you’re here and she isn’t, that means she’s never going to come back."

Dominic ran his tongue across his inner cheek. "I’m not waiting."

"You love her."

"Haha." Dominic let out a short chuckle, this time, with ridicule in his eyes. "Get to the point. You’re saying I shouldn’t wait for her? Why? Because you think that’ll save me from the greater pain of waiting?"

"What do you know, Heaven?" he mocked. "You got her memories, her skills, her secrets. Yet, you couldn’t change a thing."

"Did you?"

Dominic’s breath hitched, forced to say, "How I wish I could."

"You did." Heaven let out a shallow breath. Pursing her lips, smiling subtly. "When I woke up in her body the first time, I almost lost my mind, Dom. I wasn’t even shocked to be waking up again, just as one would expect when they woke up in another person’s body."

"Hera’s memories... I’m still surprised until now that I survived living in her mind," she continued. "She has a lot of enemies, just as many as her allies. All of them are formidable and scary, fearless and ruthless. I never met anyone capable of killing another human being. But in those memories, most people she knows kill people as naturally as breathing. It was a scary and dangerous world."

Heaven paused as her body started trembling as if recounting a traumatic experience. "But do you know what truly scared me? The real reason I almost lost my mind?"

"It’s not her enemies, Dom," she added quietly, but clearly. "It’s Hera. Her thought process, her pain, her trauma, and her coping mechanism. She is the real monster among all the other monsters in the underground. It would’ve been better if she did everything while doing drugs; it would have helped. But she faced everything while conscious, and aware, and that’s what made things worse."

Dominic listened, even though he knew he didn’t have to. His eyes remained fixated on Heaven’s face, catching every subtle emotion in her eyes. Fear, relief, anxiety, awe, and many other more took turns in her eyes.

"She’s selfish, decisive, and pure ruthless. Yet, she’s not here," she stressed. "If she’s still the Hera I saw in those memories, you, Basti, Miracle, even me will not be in here. For her own selfish greed, she’d keep us all close, no matter how dangerous it was. Whether or not we want to. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say she would kill me just to avoid more complications."

Heaven paused, holding Dominic’s gaze. "Yet, she did none of those because she knew that keeping you close also means taking away your freedom. It’s not that you couldn’t change anything, you changed her."
