Chapter 1029: Sly jerk

Meanwhile...

The sound of mechanical heart rate rang in the ward. Dominic sat steadily beside the bed, staring at the patient, who had the same face as him. His eyelids drooped, recalling how he got Silas to agree to his plan.

It was hard to convince the man, especially since what he was asking was for Silas to give up his life. Dominic thought Silas wouldn’t change his mind, until one day, Silas wrote him a letter. Everything from there onwards was done with discretion.

"He said... he had always envied me," Dominic broke the silence with a quiet voice. "He had always lived on the sideline, watching me and comparing my life to him. All he could see was how I live so easily and how easy things come in my way."

Bear, who was standing guard by the corner, kept his eyes on Dominic.

"So, I asked him if he wants to live as Dominic Zhu even just for a day," he continued in the same somber tone. "He sneered at me and said he didn’t have to anymore. When he was incarcerated, he realized what it’s truly like to be Dominic Zhu."

"I never hated my life, nor have I ever thought I would. It wasn’t as perfect as how others see it, but it was good enough for me," he added, smiling subtly. "Heaven and I might not have gotten along, but it’s tolerable. I didn’t love her, but she gave me the greatest gift I never thought I deserved. She gave me Basti."

"Even if we got divorced, I still planned to take care of her. And I will continue living the way I do. As I said, it’s not perfect and I never want it to be perfect." Dominic lowered his eyes as he looked back at the life he had. "Do you know what Silas told me?"

Bear didn’t answer, but Dominic still spoke.

"He said my life... is not any better than his. It’s just as bad as seeing his mother still on that noose everywhere he looks." Dominic rocked his head. "He’s right. So, he pities me. He said all he wants is to stop seeing his mother everywhere, and all I want is to be anyone but Dominic Zhu."

He paused. "We finally had something to agree on after all these years. Isn’t that ridiculous?"

"Why did you give the phone to Basti?" Bear asked, changing the subject, knowing Dominic was simply diverting the attention. He had been with Dominic ever since Tiger was suspended. And thus, he knew Dominic had been visiting Silas every single day in prison.

"Because whatever she wants to say..." Dominic slowly turned his head in Bear’s direction. "... I don’t want to hear it. Do you think she already called?"

"I don’t know, but she will."

"Will letting her speak to my son piss her?"

"Knowing her, she’ll be pissed enough to get your neck on the chopping board."

"Then, that’s good." Dominic chuckled, peeling his gaze from Bear to the unconscious Silas. "No one had ever crossed Hera Cruel and got away with it. How do you think she will kill me?"

"Hera doesn’t kill those who cross her so easily." Bear let out a deep exhale. "She’ll take her time until your body, mind, heart, and soul screams for death."

Dominic’s smile stretched a little wider, rocking his head in understanding. "That’s plenty of time to win her back." He planted his hands on the armrest, pushing himself up.

"The doctors told me he wouldn’t die," he said. "I don’t know if that’s good or bad news. He wanted to die, after all."

Bear glanced at his wristwatch and looked up at him once again. "Ram’s men are already waiting on the rooftop. We had a change of location since Elliot was busy shutting down all the information about the intrusion in the Interpol."

"And Axel?"

"I told him the details as fast as I could," Bear answered monotonously. "He’s been pulling off a show in front of the cameras since then."

Dominic chuckled, nodding. His eyes fell on Silas once more, staring at his cousin, who willingly sacrificed himself to end his pain.

"Silas, thank you," he whispered sincerely. "And I’m sorry."

He reached for Silas’s shoulder, squeezing it mildly. "We are one big mess of a family, aren’t we? Once I return, let’s fight and say all the hurtful things we held back from saying all those years. Maybe throw our fists in the process. And then hopefully, we can share a drink and talk about how messy this family is."

Dominic pressed his lips into a thin line, maintaining a subtle smile. He slowly retrieved his hand, bowing deeply to show his sincerity to the man he never thought he would ever forgive. But alas, no matter how complicated their past was, they were family.

Bear kept his silence, waiting for Dominic to straighten his back. When the latter stood straight and faced him, he nodded at him.

"Let’s go, Bear," said Dominic walking away from Silas’s bed. "Dane is probably celebrating. I’ll pop the champagne for him."

[Reapers]

Hera stared at the phone, letting her tears land on her arm. She wiped it multiple times, but her eyes wouldn’t stop welling up. For the next several minutes, Hera would only stare at the phone and replay everything Sebastian prattled from the brief phone call.

"That... sly jerk," she scoffed. "He can really be a jerk sometimes."

Hera bit her inner bottom lips, thinking Dominic probably planned this all along. By the looks of it, Tiger didn’t know about it too. Well, not that it was important. She made the phone call and fell into the trap Dominic set for her.

"How annoying," she muttered, regaining the smile she thought she also lost. It was subtle, but it was a genuine one. "Not many pressed my nerve and got away with it, Dominic Zhu. You’ll regret ever tricking Hera Cruel."

Hera drew another deep breath, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. She turned to the window, catching more people being searched before they were given access.

"That’s right, Basti," she whispered, nodding. "One will feel better once they finish crying, and I’m done sulking."

Her lips curled up once more as peace and resolve shone in her eyes. "I might not be Heaven anymore, but whoever I am... I am still a mother of two beautiful balls of sunshine."
