Chapter 1025: Take your target to hell with you.
Hera Cruel.
A name that people would either praise or fear. A name that eventually turned into a status symbol for those under her wing. And a name she wished she never had. Because that name could give her anything: power, wealth, influence, hate, and unwanted love.
Anything but what she truly needed.
Hera stood in front of the sink counter, eyes on the phone that Tiger left.
"He’s worried," was what he said before he left. "Give him a call when you’re ready."
If Hera wanted to see Dominic or call him, she could, without anyone’s help. But why hadn’t she done so? Because even if hearing Dominic’s voice was the only thing she wanted right now, she couldn’t. Hera knew once she heard him or even just the sound of his breath, she would run to him like a dog, regardless of the mark on her back.
"Maybe that’s the point of everything," she whispered as a tear rolled down her cheek. "Waking up in Heaven’s body, and coveting the life that is not mine... it wasn’t a second chance, but a punishment."
She bit her inner bottom lip until the tang of iron filled her taste buds. She held her hands into tight fists, eyes on the phone resting on the sink counter. She shut her eyes and turned on her heel, taking a step to leave without the phone with her. However, she stopped as hesitation shone in her eyes.
"Don’t, Hera," she whispered to herself. "Don’t do it."
Hera felt her feet stuck on the floor, taking a lifetime of strength to lift her foot and take a step. Just after three steps, she found herself panting as if she had already run a marathon. Looking back, her eyes instantly fell on the phone.
"Damn it," she breathed out, marching back to grab the phone before storming out of the shower.
Hera didn’t bother changing her silk robe or putting on anything aside from her lingerie. She paced back and forth in front of the bed, biting the tip of her thumb. She would glance at the phone on the bed once in a while, picking it up and then tossing it back just as quickly.
For the next hour, Hera would find a momentary courage to make one last phone call to Dominic. She wanted to tell him they should end it. Ending what was between them was only the right thing to do. Not just for their sake, but also for the children. Even if it hurt, even if it would break their hearts to millions, and even if it was a hard thing to do... they had to let each other go.
But then, she knew she wasn’t ready.
She knew if she called him, all the ’right’ things she wanted to tell him would probably disappear. Hence, the dilemma.
"Fuck it." Hera jumped on the edge of the bed, snatching the phone and immediately going to its contact. There was only one name in it. All she had to do was click on it.
Just one tap.
One.
Yet, her thumb hovered over it until her hands were trembling.
"I am Hera Cruel," she muttered. "I never hesitate before and I shouldn’t hesitate now."
Hera drew a deep breath as she closed her eyes, dropping her arms to her lap.
"Damn it," she whispered. "I can’t do it."
Before Hera could even open her eyes, she heard a faint noise from behind her. Her brows rose, fluttering her eyelashes ever so slowly.
"I’ve only been awake for less than ten hours," she murmured. "And all of them are already after me."
Hera slid her eyes to the corner, catching a shadow standing near the open window. A deep breath slipped past her lips, closing her eyes to give the intruder the chance to end her pain. Maybe it was for the better, she thought. This was probably a chance, not an end.
The person wearing all black who managed to sneak inside Hera’s bedroom carefully caressed the trigger. Without saying a word, he pulled the trigger to end his target.
’This was easy,’ thought the intruder before a loud gunfire echoed across the four corners of the room.
THUD!
The intruder who thought pulled the trigger suddenly landed on his knees. He hunched in, touching his stomach and catching blood on his palm. When he looked up, he caught Hera still sitting in the same position. But only this time, there was a pistol slipped in between her arms and torso.
She shot him even without looking.
Hera slowly looked back at the man, pushing herself up, and sauntered over to him. Standing before the man, she kicked the rifle away from his reach. The shot wasn’t fatal, but it was enough to incapacitate him.
"Why are you so slow?" she asked in disappointment. "You just have to pull the trigger. Why did you have to wait for my reflexes to kick in?"
The man clenched his teeth, holding those pair of phoenix eyes swirling with mixed emotions. He tried to reach for his rifle, only for her to stomp on his hand.
"I was hopeful they would send only the best of the best," she remarked quietly, squatting down in front of him. "Why did they send someone so pathetic like you? If only you were good enough, you could’ve killed me. Don’t you guys have someone like Tiger? Who can shoot people even from miles away? The chances of killing me would be sky-high if you could do that."
Bitterness dominated her face, disappointed that this man had failed to kill her. Just like how countless assassins sent by her enemies failed.
"Here." Hera slipped her pistol into his grip, helping him point the gun at her chest. "Do it."
The corner of her mouth curled up, nodding at the man encouragingly. The man, who was slowly bleeding out to death, looked at her with equal confusion and fear.
"Come on," she urged. "You might die, but at least we’ll die together. Don’t you want that? Take your target to hell with you."
The man’s pale lips quivered, barely having any strength to hold the rifle without her help. All he could manage to do on his own was stare at her in this close distance.
"You..." the man breathed out in great difficulty. "... are crazy. Just like... what they said."
Hera’s eyes went blank as the intruder suddenly collapsed on his stomach. His hand dropped from her grip, dying sooner than he meant to. She slowly gazed down with shaky eyes. He failed.
