Chapter 1015: Piecing everything like a puzzle
"Now, Wolf’s dead."
Wolf’s eyes fell on the body at the end of the van, wearing the same clothes as him. When he lifted his eyes, it hit him.
"You’re part of that list," he whispered, referring to the list of people Hera sent out for a mission just like him. However, he had never seen these people in the Reapers.
"It’s a long story." The woman stepped aside. "We’ll tell you the details on our way home. The mother is calling everyone home."
The male detective glanced at the rest. "Clean everything up. Don’t leave any evidence behind." He then casts Wolf a look, saying, "Let’s go while she’s stalling the Interpol."
Wolf shook his head mildly, telling himself to keep it together. He dragged himself out without help. The second he stepped out, he saw the gory scene outside. It looked just like any ambush scene would appear. It was just that the people who ambushed him were also the people who were supposed to transfer him.
Wolf followed the two to a private car, sitting in the backseat. The male detective was behind the wheel while the other was in the front passenger seat. He darted his eyes between them, still hostile towards them. After all, Wolf knew Hera had a lot of secrets. One of them was the names and identities of the people she sent out for a mission, just like him.
Hera didn’t just send out members of the core like Wolf and Ram. Perhaps Wolf’s position and mission were the only public ones among the Reapers. At least, among the core members of the Reapers. But the rest? No one had any clue aside from Hera. Bear probably knew a little.
Even so, he couldn’t just let his guard down. Until he was sure they were allies or saw Hera, he wouldn’t lower his guard.
"Right. I’m sorry for the late introduction." Suddenly, the female detective looked back. "I’m Tracy and this is my partner Victor."
"So it’s not Detective Campbell and Valden?" Wolf scoffed. "Why should I believe you?"
"If you don’t believe us, then why did you come with us?" said Victor, eyes on the rearview mirror. "Too many enemies back there?"
That was right.
The only reason Wolf went with them was it was easier to fight two instead of ten.
"We weren’t part of the Reapers," said Tracy, peeling her gaze from the backseat. "At least, not officially. My story is a very long and complicated one. But to make it short, this is my first mission. It’s the same for Victor. That is why you never saw us with the group."
"It’s not like Hera doesn’t have a plan," Victor added. "She said it’s better if no one knows about our cover. Even her own people."
Wolf’s expression hardened, observing the two.
"If that’s her orders, then why did you blow it?" he asked under his breath. "Hera isn’t someone who will just ask you to blow your cover for others, or even for her sake."
"It’s always for the better good... is what she always says," Tracy quipped. "You’re right. As much as possible, she would want her people to keep their cover. Even if she was behind bars, she wouldn’t give the damn word. It’s almost torturous that we’ve been living our lives as different people for a very long time."
She paused, smiling. "After playing a role for a long time, sometimes, I would wonder who I truly am. Am I Tracy? Or Detective Valden?"
"But I guess the wait is over," she added.
"Wait?" Wolf furrowed his brows. "Wait for what?"
"Didn’t she tell you the reason she asked you to infiltrate the Central Intelligence?" Victor inquired out of plain curiosity.
Wolf didn’t answer. Whatever reason Hera gave him was already something everyone knew. She wanted Wolf to erase her tracks and clean her people’s records. Everyone knew that. As mentioned, his mission was quite public in the Reapers.
"When Hera made her orders, she was already facing problems with her regular clients," explained Victor solemnly. "She knew one of these days, the Reapers would come crashing down if she didn’t do anything. That’s why she planned to send people out to different parts of the world."
"Others call it so she could control the world. Maybe it was a move out of greed," Tracy added. "But Hera isn’t as shallow as that. She knew her enemies and what they were capable of. Therefore, she had to be as unpredictable as she could to be a step ahead of them."
"She didn’t mention it to anyone — maybe she did, but not to you," Victor continued in the same tone. "Felice’s death doesn’t end with that traitor. Her death is more than an ambitious traitor blinded by greed. Those same people who took her mother’s life were also the same people who wanted to take hers."
"Only this time, they didn’t want just her," Tracy backed up. "They want the entire Reapers dead. That’s why she asked you to infiltrate the Central Intelligence."
"If that is the plan, then why didn’t that happen?" Wolf blurted out, only to see Victor cast him a strange look in the rearview mirror. Tracy also looked back as if she was in disbelief at hearing that question.
After a second, Wolf rocked his head in understanding.
’Right...’he thought. ’Because she fell sick.’
"Her sudden death put everything on halt," Tracy sighed, setting her eyes ahead. "Dragon was good. We give that to him."
"He won’t have that nickname if he’s stupid," Wolf scoffed. "He got all of us."
"He did." Victor nodded. "But the point is, now that she’s back, it wouldn’t be a surprise if she put her initial plans in motion."
Wolf lowered his head, and his tensed shoulders relaxed. Hera was in Heaven’s body all along. However, she never mentioned anything about this. However, the more he thought about it, the more it made sense why Hera never mentioned it while in Heaven’s body.
Because Hera planned was total destruction.
She couldn’t just risk everything, especially when she was given a chance to start a new one. But now that she was back in her own body, everything also returned. Not just her problem with Dragon and Dimitri, but also the existing ones before she died.
"Does Ram..." Wolf trailed off as he raised his eyes to the front. "Does he know?"
Tracy glanced over her shoulder. "We don’t know how, but why do you think he lets her into Dragon’s custody all this time?"
In other words, Ram got a hold of this information. Hence, explains his obedience to Dragon’s whims. It wasn’t that he was afraid of Dragon. He was more afraid of Hera’s enemies lurking in the shadows. And if there was someone who would protect Hera just as much as him, it would be Dragon.
