Chapter 86: Miting De Avance

"Wake up..."

The voice was distant like an echo across a canyon of dreams. Something was calling for her, tugging at the edges of her consciousness.

But she felt so light and so hollow. Like her soul had unraveled, thread by thread, and dissolved into the void. It was warm, quiet, and peaceful here. She didn’t want to leave.

"Wake up..."

Again. Louder. Closer. Urgent.

"Wake up..."

She stirred, barely. Her limbs didn’t respond, but her mind began to have faint sparks of thoughts returning.

"Wake up..."

"Wake up!"

"WAKE UP!"

The final shout tore through her like lightning cracking the sky.

Verena gasped.

The ceiling above her was familiar. It was her dorm room.

Wait... dorm room?

She sat up slowly, body stiff. Her sheets clung to her like a second skin. The light filtering through the windows told her it was morning. Everything felt... real. and tangible. Had she truly been hurled into the future after surviving the self-progression arc?

"For the love of the universe, wake the fuck up!"

Whump!

A pillow smacked squarely into her face, knocking her back into the mattress.

"Oof!"

She bolted upright in shock, her eyes wide as she stared at the figure standing beside her bed, arms crossed, scowl fully loaded.

"Sera...?" she breathed.

The girl huffed, clearly annoyed. "What? You’ve been out for minutes and now you’re just gonna stare at me like I’m a ghost?"

Verena didn’t hesitate. She surged forward, grabbing Sera in a tight embrace, running her fingers through her hair, feeling the shape of her small frame, the warm weight in her arms.

"You’re real... Oh gods, it’s really you..."

SLAP!

A sharp sting bloomed across her cheek.

"Pervert!" Sera shrieked, flushed red. "What the hell’s wrong with you?!"

Verena just laughed breathlessly, tears forming at the corners of her eyes.

She was home.

[Recommendation: RUN, QUEEN.]

Ah, fuck. There it is. The goddamn system again...

Annoying? Absolutely. But also... weirdly comforting. Like the universe’s way of saying "Get up, loser, you’ve got trauma to unpack." In a way, it was like life itself was rebooting through passive-aggressive notifications.

Basically, it was a digital nagging bitch.Much like the real-life one standing in front of her right now.

"You bitch! The miting de avance is about to start!" Sera yelled, hands on her hips like a very angry pixie.

"Okay, okay—jeez! I just resurrected from existential hell, can I at least pee first?"

Verena bolted into the bathroom like a woman on a mission, except the mission was not getting smacked with a system penalty.

She tore through her routine like a man using one bar of soap for his hair, face, and soul. Not that she did that, obviously. Ew. She had standards. But the speed was comparable.

Three minutes. Maybe less. A personal world record.

BAM!

She punched the bathroom door open, towel barely clinging on. Sera, who was just minding her own business, got a full view.

"Pervert!" Sera shrieked, turning around with the speed of light.

"Oops," Verena said with zero remorse, already toweling off and wearing on her uniform like she was speedrunning an outfit change. She snatched her comb and decided she’d just tame her hair on the run. Efficiency was key.

Just as she hit the door, she spun on her heel and grinned at the flustered girl.

"Love you, pookie!"

"W-WHAT?!" Sera’s face exploded into crimson.

But Verena was already gone, dashing like a lunatic.

[Time Left: 4 minutes]

She glanced at the system timer.

Her eye twitched. "Four minutes?! That’s, like, two anime intros and a dramatic gasp!"

The gym, where the miting de avance was held, was on the other side of the campus. Basically, a five-minute jog on a good day. But this was a day of divine punishment. Birds were chirping mockingly. The wind was against her. The universe was watching with popcorn.

And Verena became a track star.

She leapt down stairs two at a time, ran across cobblestones like her feet weren’t dying, and almost knocked over a first-year carrying a suspiciously large bouquet. "Move it, Romeo!"

"Wait, was that the Conduitor—?!"

Someone opened a door in front of her. She parkoured off it.

"Hey, that’s not legal!" someone yelled behind her. "Is she Naruto-running?!"

Absolutely. Arms behind her, hair flailing like a banner of chaos, and the wind drying her half-damp hair into a frizz bomb.

"System, give me a temporary Speed Buff!"

[ERROR: You are not cute enough right now to receive temporary buffs.]

"Excuse me?!"

But she didn’t stop.

She slid under a floating broom, dodged a pigeon that looked way too judgmental, and did a somersault roll through the east hallway like her dignity wasn’t already dead.

One minute left.

"I will not get penalized for tardiness, you corporate-coded gremlin of a system!"

The gym was in sight. She could already hear Maisen’s annoying voice on the mic—

"Here we are gathered today for—"

CRASH!

Everyone was staring at her.

Awkwardly.

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION]

[CONGRATULATIONS! You have arrived at the Miting de Avance just in time.]

[No penalties will be applied.]

If she could flip the system off, she would’ve given it a double middle finger.

Thankfully, the Miting de Avance hadn’t officially started yet.

The gym was in prep mode—streamers halfway hung, students half-asleep, and one poor guy trying to untangle a mic cable.

She rushed to her party, eyes lighting up when she saw—

"Beatrice!" Verena yelled, launching herself into the girl’s arms.

"Why are you being such a weirdo?!"

"Says the biggest weirdo here!"

Once everything was set, they were herded behind the gym stage, waiting for the full crowd to settle.

Beatrice peeked through the door, eyes going wide at the flood of students. "There’s so many... What if I freeze?"

Cassian, their candidate for governor, placed a hand on her shoulder. "Pay them no mind. We got this."
