Chapter 59: Don’t Be Mad At Me!

Just when Verena thought she had finally broken free from the relentless grip of Evelyn Ashbourne, she opened her dorm door only to find a whimpering girl crouched in front of it like a kicked puppy.

[System Notification: Affection Update!]

[Target: Evelyn Ashbourne]

[+2 Affection Points Earned!]

[Affection Points: 47]

Huh?!Why did her Affection Points go up? Didn’t I throw her out last night?

"Why are you here?" she asked, exasperated.

Evelyn flinched, eyes wide with desperation. "Please don’t leave me!"

"I’m not leaving y—"

"Please don’t be mad at me!"

Ah, yes.

The doormat cycle.

The moment they realize they’ve messed up, they spiral into an endless loop of apologies, clinging to the person they think they’ve wronged.

It wasn’t even always about the other person. No, it was about them, their own fear of abandonment.

Verena knew this all too well.

God, she reminds me of my ex-boyfriend...

Her second ex had been just like this.

Whining, clinging, promising to change only to do the same thing again. And again.

No wonder dealing with Evelyn felt like handling an ex-lover in the middle of a breakdown.

Verena sighed, rubbing her temples. "I... Uh, forgive you, okay?"

Evelyn immediately brightened, her teary eyes sparkling with relief.

Great. Problem solved.

So why was Evelyn still following her around?

"Hey, do you know that girl?" Cassian, the governor candidate, asked as they stood outside her classroom discussing election matters.

Verena barely glanced in Evelyn’s direction. "No."

From behind a nearby wall, Evelyn peeked around the corner, her intense stare boring into them. It was impossible to ignore.

No matter where Verena moved, Evelyn lurked nearby.

At lunch, she was there.

During lectures, she was there.

Even when Verena went to the library, she was there.

Verena sighed, stabbing her fork into her food with a little more force than necessary. If I just ignore her, maybe she’ll go away.

She tried to pretend Evelyn didn’t exist.

That she was just a speck of dust floating persistently in her line of sight.

A very persistent speck of dust.

During class, she asked the teacher if she could step out for a moment. Just a quick break. A breather. A moment of peace.

But, of course, the presence was still there.

That very familiar, very persistent presence of someone who simply did not understand the concept of giving up.

She picked up her pace. They matched it.

She sped up.They did too.

She full-on sprinted.So did they.

"WHY ARE YOU RUNNING AWAY FROM ME?!"

"STOP FOLLOWING ME!!"

Thank god they were far from the classroom, but their voices still bounced off the hallway walls, carrying their chaos for anyone nearby to enjoy.

"Is that it?! Do you hate me now?! Is that why you’re ignoring me?! You’re replacing me, aren’t you?!"

"I have no idea what you’re talking about!" Verena shouted, legs burning as she pushed herself forward.

At least she was in a school uniform and not a damn corset. Dodging a lunatic was hard enough without fashion getting in the way.

"Do you really hate me that much now?! Answer me, Verena!!"

Verena skidded to a stop, doubling over and clinging to the wall, chest heaving.

"I’m just going to the bathroom, goddamn it!"

"...Oh."

The moment Verena stepped into the bathroom, she seriously considered escaping through the window. Maybe she could climb out and disappear into the wild, never to be found again.

She plopped down on the toilet seat. Five minutes passed.

Escape... or not escape?Escape... or not escape?

If she escaped, she’d finally be free. No more relentless pursuit, no more suffocating presence. But if she ran now, would it only make things worse?

Staying meant enduring more of this nonsense. More of this absolute waste of oxygen disguised as action.

"Verena, are you okay? You’re not having diarrhea, are you?" Evelyn’s concerned voice rang from outside the stall.

"I’m fine—"

Before she could finish, a hand slid under the stall door, offering tissues.

Verena exhaled. In defeat, she took them.

"If you need anything, I can help! I can even wipe you!"

I’M NOT A GRANDMA!

Several deep breaths later, Verena finally stepped out.

Evelyn was there, beaming, practically vibrating with the energy of someone ready to serve at a moment’s notice.

Her eyes sparkled with devotion, her smile stretched wide, though her twitching eyelid betrayed a hint of guilt.

Verena pinched the bridge of her nose. "What happened to the whole talk about respect?"

"I am respecting you! I’m serving you however I can!"

"That’s not—" Verena stopped herself. What’s the point?

"Never mind."

This girl still believed that submission and devotion were the keys to earning love. Verena couldn’t even blame her. It was hard to unlearn something ingrained since childhood. She had been brainwashed into thinking that being a good girl made her lovable.

Honestly, Verena didn’t trust her.

But duty was duty.

"Punch me in the arm," Verena said.

"P-Punch you?" Evelyn blinked, looking scandalized.

"Yeah. When someone disrespects you, you punch them."

"But I don’t want to—"

"Well, I ignored you, didn’t I? Stop trying to please me. Bring justice instead."

The words probably sounded like an alien language to Evelyn. Her expression flickered between confusion and reluctance, as if Verena had just asked her to commit a crime.

Still, she hesitantly raised a fist, her wide eyes silently pleading for some kind of explanation.

"Now!" Verena barked.

With a startled squeak, Evelyn flinched, then swung.

Thwack!

Pain shot through Verena’s arm. She gritted her teeth, a single thought ringing in her head:

Shit, why did that actually hurt?!

She sucked in a breath. Held it. Controlled herself.

"G-G-Good job," Verena stammered, trying not to wince.

Evelyn beamed, fists clenched in triumph.

Dear god, what have I done?

It suddenly made sense why Evelyn was so strong, even if she couldn’t quite see it yet. After all, there was a reason she was the first heroine, the true main character of the entire series.

It was because she was the Worldchanger, the very Incarnation of the First Weaver in this world.
