Chapter 12: Air Cannon?

“Right, right, just like that! No matter which part, just release that energy. Come on, you’re almost there!”

No, don’t get the wrong idea—this wasn’t some shady scene. It was just Ace Ultraman’s words. In the Land of Light, Mu Yang felt he’d probably never fall in love. He couldn’t handle the aesthetics here. Sure, Ultramans had romance, but with their browless, bulbous eyes (lamp eyes) and some female Ultramans having oval faces (maybe passable?), Mu Yang just couldn’t vibe with it.

His life felt bleak. The Ultraman world seemed devoid of girls matching his tastes. Tokusatsu heroines couldn’t compare to 2D anime girls! Why hadn’t he transmigrated into an anime world?!

But right now, Mu Yang had no time for such thoughts. He needed strength to survive this dangerous universe. His decent combat skills weren’t enough.

Under Ace’s guidance, Mu Yang worked on developing his beam techniques. With the system’s help, he could perfectly control his current energy. However, unlike other Ultramans who emitted energy from their arms, his best spot was his mouth.

He opened his mouth wide, firing a blast of energy that hit a target nearby. Honestly, if not for his enhanced physique, the recoil would’ve dislocated his jaw. No wonder young Taro and Orb struggled to aim their beams early on.

Looking at it, his performance seemed pretty good!

But then he saw the target and was dumbfounded. It was completely unscathed.

Seven and Ace exchanged glances, staring at the pristine target.

“No way! Everything seemed right. Using your mouth to fire beams isn’t that unusual—plenty in the Land of Light can do it!” Ace said thoughtfully. “Did you not condense the energy enough? No, that’s not it. The energy was plenty strong, comparable to my usual Metallium Beam. So why didn’t it work?”

“Try again?” Seven suggested, looking perplexed.

This was baffling. The energy wasn’t weak.

“Alright!” Mu Yang took a deep breath. His energy reserves were substantial, at least on par with Zero’s. In the Land of Light, energy depletion wasn’t an issue. He’d also noticed his energy recovery was much faster than Zero’s…

He used his self-named Mouth Light Cannon again, deliberately pouring in extra energy for damage. Sadly, the beam hit the target and still caused no damage.

“What’s going on?” Even Ace was stumped.

He’d never seen anything like this!

Mu Yang rubbed his chin, pondering silently. Was this the system’s fault?

When Ace taught him beam techniques, the system didn’t prompt an instant-learn option. Was it restricting him?

Thinking of the lottery function, he cursed inwardly. Damn system! Was it forcing him to use the lottery by blocking his beam learning? His plan to master all the Ultra Brothers’ combat and beam skills was falling apart.

But could his useless beam still earn shock points?

He glanced slyly at Ace and Seven, feeling these old-timers were definitely mocking him—kindly, of course. If he learned everything too fast, they’d probably lose the will to live.

“It’s probably the nature of your light!” A deep, resonant voice came from nearby.

Three more Ultramans approached. Leading was one with large horns—the Father of Ultra—followed by Taro and the Mother of Ultra.

The whole family showed up?

“Father, Mother! Taro!” Seven and Ace quickly greeted them.

“Uh, hello!” Mu Yang hurriedly followed suit. He was under their wing, after all. The Father of Ultra was the Land of Light’s current leader, so respect was due. As for the future, well, that was for later.

He’d met the Mother of Ultra before—a kind, gentle grandma. But this was his first time seeing Taro, the first Super Ultraman. Shame Super Taro only appeared once…

As for regular Taro, some said he was the strongest of the Ultra Six Brothers, others claimed Zoffy was, just holding back for some grand plan. Regardless, Taro’s strength was undeniable!

“No need for formalities!” the Father of Ultra waved dismissively. “Mu Yang, this is our first formal meeting! Your performance has truly surprised me!”

“It’s just so-so. Look at my beam technique!” Mu Yang pointed at the unscathed target. “See, I might be a one-trick pony. Any ideas to help me out?”

Footnotes:

无眉大眼 (wú méi dà yǎn): Literally “browless big eyes,” a playful description of Ultraman facial designs, emphasizing their lack of eyebrows and large, glowing eyes (often called “lamp eyes” in fan circles). It underscores Mu Yang’s struggle with Ultraman aesthetics.

鹅蛋脸 (édàn liǎn): Literally “goose egg face,” a Chinese term for an oval-shaped face, considered attractive in human aesthetics. Mu Yang uses it humorously to suggest some female Ultramans might barely pass his standards.

狗币系统 (gǒu bì xìtǒng): Literally “dog coin system,” a slang insult combining “dog” (a common pejorative) with “coin” (from cryptocurrency slang), used to curse the system for being unhelpful. It reflects Mu Yang’s frustration in a modern, internet-savvy tone.

人前显圣 (rén qián xiǎn shèng): Literally “showing off sainthood before others,” a modern internet slang term meaning to flaunt one’s superiority or skills publicly to impress or shock others. Mu Yang uses it to describe his attention-grabbing actions.
