Chapter 25: Going Back

Splatter.

The icicles rained onto the remaining Ice Wolf and plunged into the body of the Ice Wolf.

Blood and innards splattered as the icicles ripped the body of the Ice Wolf apart.

Lukas knew who had come to help.

It was Shiba.

He kicked the body of the Ice Wolf that bit his hand aside and walked over to Shiba and patted Shiba’s head.

Shiba looked up and responded with its usual wide grin.

A familiar sound then erupted in Lukas’s mind.

[Ding!]

[Slaughter Points +200]

[Current Slaughter Points: 600/3000]

[Host Level: 3]

[Current Abilities: 3]

[SSS Level Physique]

[SSS Level Shadow Wielder]

[SSS Level Summoner]

"Wait for me to get the demonic beast cores before feasting on them." Lukas said to Shiba, and it nodded its head, as if it was able to understand.

He got to work and took out the demonic beast cores from the four Ice Wolves’ bodies.

"Here you go. You can have your feast now."

When he turned around and glanced over at Shiba, it was lying on the ground with its eyes closed.

Lukas used his SSS Level Summoner ability to see what was going on.

He shook his head and smiled when the response he got was that Shiba needed to rest after unleashing the attacks.

Using his SSS Level Summoner ability, Lukas then summoned Shiba into his Summoner Space.

An orange glow engulfed Shiba and Shiba disappeared into thin air.

Lukas then looked up and realized the woods had started to get darker.

After having a glance at his watch, he saw that it was already 5PM.

It was time for him to go back before nightfall.

...

At the checkpoint, it was bustling with activity again.

All the awakened that had gone out and cleared the surroundings of demonic beasts came back with their haul of the day.

And they kept the demonic beast cores closely guarded in their backpacks until they came up to the checkpoint counter.

They opened their backpack and let the soldier at the checkpoint counter record down the number of demonic beast cores they had.

For any demonic beast cores they had gotten, they would receive a reward of $100.

It would then be reported to the Awakened Center, so that those in governance would have a feel of how the clearing was going.

"Looks like it was a rewarding day for your team."

"Nah. It’s nothing much. We only managed to kill off two Fire Deers."

"What? Two Fire Deers and you tell us it’s nothing much."

Most had been able to kill off just one or two demonic beasts.

Killing off demonic beasts with their lower-level abilities was difficult.

The soldiers were now on full alert as the night drawing near meant that things could be unpredictable.

One of the awakened came up to the soldier at the checkpoint counter and asked, "So, how’s our bet going?"

"Now that you’ve reminded us. How is the young man now?"

"Maybe he already got rescued by one of the other teams."

"I didn’t see any rescue mission on the Awakened App."

The other awakened were reminded of their bets on Lukas and they were also interested to know.

"Oh, our bet... The young man isn’t back yet." The soldier at the counter twirled the pen in his hand around and his eyes looked out into the distance.

He prayed hard for Lukas to appear.

The other awakened frowned at the soldier’s response.

"Isn’t back? I think everyone knows what that means. The young man most likely died out there."

One of the awakened spoke, and everyone else nodded.

To them, Lukas must have been killed by one of the demonic beasts.

Something they’d witnessed over the years whenever someone went out there alone.

They went and looked for the banker and started to ask for their rewards.

The banker cursed at his bad luck and grumbled.

There just wasn’t enough that bet on Lukas for it to be profitable.

He sighed and reached into his pocket to take out his cash.

But a commotion made him stop.

"That’s the guy, isn’t it?"

"I think so."

"My God, he really is back."

Out in the distance a lone figure was approaching the checkpoint.

It was none other than Lukas.

They scanned Lukas up and down and were surprised that he was unharmed.

"Thank God!"

The banker was ecstatic with Lukas’s return.

He wiped the beads of sweat off his forehead, and the tears rolling in his eyes and gave out a long sigh.

Looking at Lukas, he had wanted to go up to Lukas and give him a kowtow for coming back.

Now, he wouldn’t have to pay out to most of the awakened.

Lukas didn’t know why there was such an enormous amount of attention on him.

He just nodded at the awakened around him and waited for his turn in the queue.

However, the soldier at the counter waved at Lukas for him to step forward.

He gave Lukas a huge grin as he had now won half of the bet.

With his winning odds at 1:100 he already felt rich.

And so, the soldier at the counter was eager to find out whether he had won the other half of the bet.

That is, did Lukas kill any demonic beast and get a demonic beast core.

"Welcome back." The soldier stood up with his arms opened wide and said to Lukas.

Lukas frowned and nodded at him.

What’s with the warm welcome? Lukas thought to himself silently.

The soldier with his arms stretched out, gave Lukas an awkward smile and sat down.

"So... Did you manage to kill any demonic beast and retrieve their demonic beast core?

"You are required to show us how many for us to record it down. You will receive $100 reward for each demonic beast core obtained. "

The soldier leaned forward and asked.

All the awakened turned their attention to Lukas.

Lukas was empty handed, and his pockets didn’t seem to be bulging with any demonic beast cores.

They expected Lukas to say no, and he wasn’t able to kill any demonic beast.

At the very next moment, they heard Lukas open his mouth.
