I have an Apocalypse City -
Chapter 1136 - Chapter 1136 Chapter 1138 Inquiry _1
Chapter 1136: Chapter 1138: Inquiry _1 Chapter 1136: Chapter 1138: Inquiry _1 City of Hope had a dedicated area for the construction of divine temples, where not only the Goddess of Dawn’s Temple stood but also several other temples dedicated to gods like the Sun God, the God of Light, the Forest Goddess, and so on.
Previously, I promised Cecilia that the Temple of the Goddess of Dawn would cover three hundred acres, and so the standard was set for the other temples as well. Each occupied three hundred acres, which made the land in City of Hope start to feel a bit tight.
Fortunately, Song Jian and Wang Qi had anticipated this and designated the temple area to be in the outskirts. Although a road leading to the temple area was specially constructed, many of the basic infrastructures and facilities had yet to be established there.
Sitting in the carriage, Song Jian looked at the somewhat desolate land on both sides of the road and couldn’t help but touch his nose, feeling a bit embarrassed.
“You know, every time I go to buy grain, I have to drive the carriage over twenty kilometers…” Cecilia glanced at Song Jian and said.
“There’s no helping it, there are just too many deities in this world. If we arranged for all of them to be in the city center, there simply wouldn’t be enough space!” Song Jian couldn’t help but defend, “And although it’s a bit desolate here, the environment is very good, and the air is fresh…”
Cecilia rolled her eyes at him and stopped paying attention to Song Jian, lowering her head to look at a book in her hands.
Song Jian let out a sigh of relief, finally understanding why he had seen Cecilia at the library. Such a desolate place, even the most devout priest would probably grow weary and would often go to the city center to relax, he thought.
“Don’t worry, the population of City of Hope will keep increasing, and one day it will extend out here. By then, this place might become the busiest area in the entire city!” Song Jian comforted her.
“I look forward to that day!” Cecilia raised her head to look at Song Jian and said with a smile.
Just then, Song Jian suddenly noticed that to the left, not far off, there was a construction site. A group of construction workers were digging foundations, and slabs of black stone, each two to three meters long and over a meter wide, were being hauled over by horse-drawn carts. The site was also piled with many stone statues, each about five to six meters tall, looking quite majestic.
“What is that? Could it be another deity’s temple?” Song Jian asked curiously, pointing to the distant construction site.
Cecilia looked up briefly and said indifferently, “It’s the Temple of Nyx, the Goddess of Night. This place is always shrouded in clouds, plunged into darkness all day long – quite suitable for this goddess, haha!”
A wry smile appeared on Song Jian’s face. He naturally noticed the teasing tone in Cecilia’s words, but there wasn’t much he could do about the weather.
Since gaining first-level combat power, Song Jian had visited many places in the game world, like the City of Sin, the City of Hymns, and even Fengming City, which is closest to Scorching Gorge. These cities were almost no different from the real world, with bright sunshine during the day and the moon hanging high at night, surrounded by dazzling stars.
In City of Hope, however, during both day and night, the sky was mostly covered by thick clouds most of the time, making the people living there feel quite oppressed.
At that moment, Song Jian suddenly noticed a woman in a black robe standing on the construction site of the Goddess of Night’s Temple, looking towards them. Although she stood still like a statue, without uttering a word, she exerted a sort of pressure on Song Jian; clearly, she was a formidable person.
“Doratol, hmph!” Cecilia also caught sight of the woman, her face immediately turning sour as she let out a cold snort and pulled down the carriage curtain with a tug.
“Doratol? She’s a priestess of the Night Goddess, right?” Song Jian laughed, “What’s wrong, don’t you get along with her? The location of the Night Goddess temple seems quite close to the Goddess of Dawn’s temple. I think the priests of the two deities should have a good relationship.”
“The first light of dawn signals the end of the night; how do you think my relationship is with the priestess of the Night Goddess?” Cecilia rolled her eyes and said, “That woman is a formidable figure. You should stay away from her, or she might trick you.”
Song Jian just laughed and didn’t take it seriously.
Soon, the carriage stopped in front of a temple that was entirely built of white granite. The whole structure was majestic and artistic. A group of warriors dressed in silver armor stood motionless on both sides of the Temple Gate, like statues.
Seeing Cecilia, the group of warriors stretched out their right hands and struck their chest armor fiercely, making a “thud” sound. Dozens of warriors saluted at the same time but produced only one sound, which surprised Song Jian.
“Can you share the method you use to train the Dawn Warriors? These warriors seem quite strong, but most importantly, their discipline is simply astonishing!” Song Jian couldn’t help but say.
“Because they are all devout believers!” Cecilia glanced at Song Jian and said, “If you don’t mind your city guards becoming followers of the Goddess of Dawn, I could even send a few Knights of Dawn to train your army specially!”
Song Jian was momentarily at a loss for words. In the game, almost all city rulers have a love-hate relationship with the high and mighty deities; they both desire the favor of the gods and the help they provide but also fear that the gods will take everything away from them.
At the very least, they would keep tight control of the army, not allowing the city guards to have any faith–even though most city lords know that such an approach is ridiculous and futile. Just thinking about the scene where the city guards protecting them could, at the call of a single priest of a deity, defect without hesitation would deter any city lord from harboring a stroke of luck.
Song Jian was no exception; his recruited city guards were mostly NPC warriors but also included many player guild members. These players, unless required by their profession, would not worship any deity and, even if they did, it was only as lay believers, similar to a kind of transaction.
Passing through the temple and under Cecilia’s guidance, they bypassed the training area and arrived in front of a white stone tower.
“You are only allowed to look through materials on the first floor of the Temple of Knowledge; you cannot go to the second floor!” Cecilia led Song Jian inside and said sternly, “You have this privilege because you are someone our God values, but if you violate the will of the deity, you will invoke divine wrath!”
“I understand,” Song Jian nodded. This place must be similar to the Scripture Repository Pavilion of Shaolin Monastery; surely it contains numerous skills and spells, and possibly even powerful divine spells bestowed by the Goddess of Dawn, off-limits to most people.
Although there was no one else around, Song Jian believed that his every move here was under surveillance, but his purpose in coming here was just to consult information about the Sword Sect and had no intention of coveting anything else.
Cecilia nodded, pointed to a row of bookshelves on the left side of the first floor, and said, “The information you want is on the third row of shelves. Oh, and you only have two hours here, so please make good use of your time.”
Song Jian nodded and walked towards the bookshelves, while Cecilia watched him for a while and then turned to leave the stone tower. There was no need for her protection here; this was one of the most crucial and heavily defended structures of the temple. Cecilia believed that with Song Jian’s wisdom, he would not entertain any bad ideas here.
