Chapter 431: Chapter 132: Something that makes him feel strong must be tricky.

Gas station.

"Hehe"

Officer Huang stood at a distance, growling towards a modified bus, as if communicating through the sound, mindful of his appearance possibly causing panic among ordinary citizens, he maintained a safe distance.

The survivors inside the bus clung to the windows, looking out at Officer Huang.

The bus had just run out of gas and had come to the gas station to refuel when suddenly, zombies appeared; they thought the person refueling would be devoured, but who could have expected a zombie to suddenly turn up and kill all the other zombies.

Startled, they hurried back to the bus, nervously watching the situation outside.

"Maybe this zombie uncle is trying to help us," one said.

"Impossible, all zombies are the same, they’ll eat us on sight, without any sense of reason. I think this zombie just doesn’t want to share with the others, that’s why he killed them off," another retorted.

"Now’s not the time for this kind of talk. Our bus is out of gas; we can’t just sit here and do nothing."

The bus was in an uproar.

They were all like scared little rabbits in their burrows, looking out at Officer Huang, none daring to venture outside.

The group of survivors had been hastily assembled.

Fleeing from the south, they were forced to stop at a gas station in Huang City as the bus was running low on fuel. Their plan was to keep heading north, towards the great plains or some remote place.

Currently, there were twelve people in the bus, eight men and four women, ranging from young to old, with the eldest being around sixty but still robust.

"If we keep this up, we’re going to be stuck here indefinitely, not knowing when that guy will leave, or when more zombies will show up. I think there’s something we could try," suggested a young man, his eyes shifting slyly as he observed the group of survivors who had banded together but harbored their own agendas. Throughout their journey, they had each collected supplies on their own, and no one was willing to selflessly share with the others.

Everyone looked at each other.

Each with their own thoughts.

"What do you mean?" someone asked, feigning ignorance as if not understanding, when in truth they did. They just wanted someone else to spell it out.

The young man looked at the only siblings in the bus, two children; the brother was twelve, and the sister was seven.

"Just now this kid said the zombie might be helping us, but who really knows the situation? Why not let her go out and give it a try? If the zombie is really helping, wouldn’t that be better?" he said, pointing at the little girl.

Whoosh!

Whoosh!

All eyes turned to the little girl, yet no one spoke up, not even to say how wrong it was to let a child take such a risk.

Everyone remained silent.

The girl looked into the eyes of the others.

Her brother stepped in front of her, his eyes wide with fear, and said, "What are you talking about? Why should my sister take the risk?"

"All along the way here, it’s been us protecting you two. Now that the bus is out of gas, we must find a way to distract that zombie so we can refuel. Your sister just said the zombie might be helping us, so let her give it a try," the young man explained.

The silence persisted.

But in their mute glances shone an unspoken agreement; they all approved, they just didn’t voice it.

"What do you all think?" the young man asked the group.

"Ahem."

"That’s the logic."

"We’ve got to find a way to refuel."

No one said outright that the girl had to go, but the implications of their words were clear.

The boy looked at them and realized how calm and indifferent they were; he knew that’s what they were thinking. He remembered how, whenever the bus stopped somewhere, he’d tell his sister to stay inside while he went with the others looking for supplies, always mindful of zombies nearby.

If zombies appeared, the bus would drive off, ready to abandon anyone at any time.

After a moment of silence.

"I understand. I’ll go," the boy said, offering to take his sister’s place in approaching the zombie.

"Who’s turn is it to refuel this time?" the young man asked. "When he gets the zombie’s attention, you jump out the window and quickly refuel. Don’t delay."

Refueling was done on rotation, with two people refueling at a time. They had operated like this throughout their journey, with no one able to avoid their turn.

Resistance was futile.

Action was necessary.

"Brother..."

"Listen, stay on the bus and be good," he said to her.

The boy patted his sister’s head, having promised his mother to take care of her, he would make sure to do so.

He was now an adult.

An adult capable of caring for his sister; no time to hide in his mother’s embrace and cry out his troubles. He had to hide all the pain inside, to be a brave little adult, the only support his sister had.

"Open the door."

Standing in front of the door, the boy took a deep breath, and with the opening of the door, he stepped down from the bus, turned back to flash his sister a smile, with a resolve as if ready to face death.

"Kid, good luck. We’ll take care of your sister," the young man said.

The boy didn’t take the words to heart.

They were insincere words.

Only a fool would believe them.

Truth be told, he didn’t believe the zombie was there to help them.

He had seen plenty of zombies, always crazily pouncing on humans, opening their ghastly maws to feast. His sister had said that the zombie seemed to be helping them.

He didn’t believe it, and neither did the others.

At such a critical moment, no one wants to sacrifice their life for someone else, and he was no different.

But for his sister, he had to do this.
