Chapter 136: Chapter 136 – The Scent of Battle in the Wind

Sofia stood before an old wooden mirror placed in the corner of her room. The mirror’s surface was slightly cracked in one corner, but still clear enough to reflect her figure. Her golden hair was still a bit messy, but her body was already clad in a set of light battle armor white with golden accents a modified version of her old military uniform. This time, the outfit was reinforced with a special material, a fusion of magic and advanced technology, designed to protect against zombie bites and claws. She took a deep breath, adjusting the belt that held her dagger and a small communication device.

"Done?" Sylvia’s voice came from the doorway casual yet teasing. She leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed over her chest, her jet-black dress swaying gently in the morning breeze drifting in through the open window. Though her smile was warm, her eyes remained sharp as blades.

Sofia looked at Sylvia’s reflection in the mirror and replied calmly, "Yes. But don’t think I’ve forgiven you for the way you woke me up earlier."

Sylvia grinned mischievously and pushed herself off the frame. She walked closer, gently tidying a loose strand of Sofia’s blonde hair that had fallen across the back of her neck. Her touch was light, almost like a breeze.

"If I didn’t, you might’ve slept till the afternoon," she said softly. "Besides... you’ve got visitors coming."

Sofia raised an eyebrow and glanced at Sylvia through the mirror. "Visitors?"

"Yeah," Sylvia replied as she turned back toward the door. "Rina and Vivi from your team. They seem to have something important to discuss and want to speak with you directly."

Hearing that, Sofia’s expression turned serious. She quickly stepped out of her room, descended the stairs, and opened her front door. Outside, Rina and Vivi were already sitting on the wooden chairs on the porch, talking quietly and glancing toward the house from time to time.

As soon as they saw Sofia, both of them stood and gave a quick salute. Sylvia remained by the doorway, arms crossed, silently observing them.

Sofia sat in the empty chair between them and began the conversation, "So, what did you want to tell me?"

Rina and Vivi seemed more relaxed now. Sylvia’s presence no longer made them overly tense perhaps because they felt more at ease when Sofia was around.

Rina was the first to speak. "We just wanted to report... about Altair and Yuki."

Sofia raised an eyebrow. "What about them?"

Vivi continued in a quiet voice, "They left the city. They said... this place is too peaceful. They want to grow stronger, and to them, living side by side with zombies... isn’t something they can accept."

Sofia clicked her tongue. "Tch. They’ve always been stubborn... But if that’s truly their decision, I won’t stop them."

She sighed, then looked at both girls in turn. "What about the two of you? Are you planning to leave as well?"

Rina answered first. "I prefer it here. The city is safe, and my work as a doctor is still useful. There’s so much to learn medically from the zombies, and I feel... like I have a purpose."

Vivi smiled and added, "Same here, Sis Sofia. I feel more comfortable in this place. No need to be on edge all the time... and we get to eat delicious food, hehe."

The three of them chuckled softly, and the conversation flowed easily. They talked about the city’s development, the new material experiments Rina was studying, and even a silly story about how Vivi once mistook a shy zombie for a ghost.

Sylvia didn’t join in. She simply stood off to the side, watching quietly, letting them enjoy the moment. Her gaze was sharp, yet understanding. She knew how important it was to build trust and a sense of community in this new world.

But as the afternoon approached and the sunlight shifted, Sylvia suddenly stopped what she was doing. Her eyes narrowed, pupils trembling slightly. A telepathic signal stirred her mind subtle yet firm.

"My Queen," Zark’s voice echoed in her thoughts, cold and flat as always. "At the city gates... there’s a horde of zombies. Many of them. They’re not part of our ranks."

Sylvia frowned, responding quickly in her mind, "How many?"

"Thousands. But only low-rank zombies. No sign of a commanding presence."

"A distraction or a probe?" Sylvia muttered internally.

She took a slow breath, then replied, "Prepare our forces. Place the high-rank zombies on the front line. Do not engage until I arrive."

"Understood, My Queen."

The telepathic link was cut.

Sylvia rose from her seat and stood tall. Her expression turned cold and serious. She looked at Sofia and said briefly, "I have to go."

Sofia furrowed her brows. "What is it?"

"Nothing serious. Just a little inspection," Sylvia replied casually, not wanting to alarm anyone until she was sure the threat was real.

Without further explanation, Sylvia walked away, moving through the town streets that were beginning to buzz with late-afternoon activity. The evening breeze carried the scent of disturbed earth, dust rising gently from the ground, and faintly... the smell of stale blood, drifting in with the approaching horde.

The scent of battle in the wind.

Sylvia walked through the city streets, now far livelier than just a few weeks ago. Humans and zombies, though still awkward in their coexistence, had begun to accept one another’s presence. But Sylvia didn’t walk leisurely her pace was brisk, cutting through the streets as she made her way toward the city’s eastern gate, where Zark was waiting.

The wind blew gently, carrying with it a foreign scent putrid and sharp, yet unlike the usual stench of zombies.

When she arrived at the wall, Sylvia climbed the stone steps and stood atop the guard tower. Below, right in front of the large metal gate reinforced with magic, thousands of zombies had gathered in a strange formation. They weren’t attacking, growling, or even moving wildly like normal zombies. They simply stood... still... waiting.

Their faces were as decayed as usual some missing noses, others with exposed ribcages or peeled skin. But one thing was different: their eyes. Not red, not cloudy white, but blackish-purple with a faint glimmer... as if something was controlling them with a subtle and organized will.

Zark stood beside Sylvia, dressed in a fine black suit like a proper butler. His voice was deep as he said, "They’ve arrived in formation, but there are no symbols or banners. However... one of them appears capable of speech."

As if understanding that their queen had arrived, a single zombie from the front lines slowly stepped forward. Its body was far more intact than the others. It wore a tattered gray robe, with a crowned skull emblem on its chest. Its neck was long, and its jaw hung slightly open, but its voice when it spoke... was clear.

"We... wish to speak to your queen..." it said, its voice heavy and distorted, like an echo from the depths of a dark well. "Our king... wishes to make her his queen."

Tension immediately filled the air.

The zombie guards atop the wall raised their weapons. Behind Sylvia, several high-ranking zombies were already on alert, holding black spears and magical weapons. Even the air near the gate began to shimmer with magical energy and mental pressure.

But Sylvia slowly raised her hand, signaling everyone to hold their ground.

She gazed at the messenger zombie with a calm yet piercing look. "Your king?" she asked flatly.

"Yes... Our Zombie King. The great savior... ruler of the northern lands who has risen once more..." the messenger replied with a tone of reverence, yet cloaked in darkness. "He... has watched this world from afar... and heard of a queen... who has slain two nuisances that dared challenge her."

Sylvia narrowed her eyes. "And he thinks... he can just come here and make someone his queen?"

The messenger bowed his head slightly. "We are merely... messengers. He... wishes to meet. And if possible... to bind you not through war... but through the uniting of blood."

A small laugh escaped Sylvia’s lips cold and mocking.

"So after I killed the other two Zombie Kings, this one shows up with a proposal?" she said quietly.

Zark muttered, "Ridiculous... Or maybe a trap. They can’t be trusted."

The messenger remained silent, head bowed, not responding to the insult. But Sylvia could sense something in the way it stood it was no ordinary zombie. There was a will inside it, but not its own. Like a puppet controlled from afar.

"I will give an answer," Sylvia finally said. She stepped forward until her body was at the very edge of the wall, overlooking the zombie horde below. The wind blew her dress back, her hair billowing like a shadow wrapping the sky in darkness.

"The answer is... I will come to him. But not as a future queen... as a hunter."

A dark purple aura erupted from Sylvia’s body, engulfing the wall with a suffocating pressure that made even the high-ranking zombies take half a step back. The enemy zombies below began to waver, some even collapsing to their knees from the sheer weight of her presence.

The zombie envoy gritted its teeth, then bowed. "...Message received. We will... convey it."

It then turned away, and the entire force of foreign zombies slowly retreated, vanishing into a mist that seemed to appear from nowhere like a gateway to death had opened and then closed once more.

Zark stood rigid. "My Queen... are we just going to let them go?"

Sylvia crossed her arms. "They’ll lead us to the King. That’s faster than searching for him."

She turned and began descending from the wall. Before she was completely gone, she told Zark, "Prepare the core army and scout team. Have the scouts follow them. In five days, we march."

"Understood."

As Sylvia walked away, the evening breeze carried the scent of fog and death. But beneath it all, one truth was clear...

The next war would be more than just a battle of the undead.

It would be the end of the Zombie Kings’ reign.

Or... the beginning of a new
