Chapter 116: Chapter 116 – Arrows in the Sky and an Unfamiliar Flame
The journey through the skies felt peaceful.
Blue skies, clouds rolling softly, and the sun gently warming my skin not that I could feel it. I sat relaxed on my dragon’s back, letting the wind caress my face and my hair stream freely. Below me, the land stretched as far as the eye could see forests, meadows, hills, and the occasional ruins of a world already fractured.
I even closed my eyes a few times.
Peaceful.
Almost boring.
But tranquility like that never lasts long in my life.
A few days after leaving the city, with the sun dipping westward and casting long shadows, I saw it.
Smoke. Dust. Trails of magic shooting through the air like falling stars. The faint sound of explosions in the distance.
At first, I thought it was just a monster horde attacking a village. But as I drew closer, I could see formations. Lines. Banners.
War.
Not a skirmish. Not some scuffle between factions. This... was war on a grand scale.
Hundreds no, thousands of fully armed human soldiers formed tight ranks on the western side. Shields, spears, arrows. They looked organized. On the other side were soldiers clad in dark armor, with pale skin and glowing eyes. Vampires.
I’d heard whispers of this back at the inn. Rumors that tension between the human nations and the shadow kingdom of the vampires was rising again. But at the time, it was just gossip passed around over cups of tea and dinner tables.
And now, I saw it with my own eyes.
From the sky, everything looked small. Even death appeared peaceful from this height.
I watched for a moment. I had no intention of getting involved. This battle wasn’t mine. I had my own destination The Tower of Echoes.
So I let my dragon continue, veering slightly to avoid flying directly over the battlefield.
But apparently... that wasn’t enough.
The first arrow whizzed past me. I wouldn’t have noticed it at all if it hadn’t left a trail of magic in the air.
The second arrow came closer, diving with a small flame swirling at its tip.
Then dozens more followed slicing through the sky.
I opened my eyes fully and met their gaze. The human soldiers. They were staring skyward, at me. And I understood.
They thought I was one of the vampires.
Pale skin. Red eyes. Riding a black dragon the size of a small house. To them, I wasn’t just an ally of the vampires I might’ve looked like their commander.
"Dragon, drop altitude evade!" I shouted.
My dragon banked sharply to the left, descending several meters to avoid the wave of magic blasts coming from their rear lines. But a creature this large, five meters long with massive wings, made for an easy target.
Several spells struck him. Small explosions erupted along his left wing, and I felt his body tremble from the pain. He roared not in agony, but in fury.
And I... was angry too.
I didn’t attack them.
I even tried to avoid them.
But they attacked me anyway.
I stood up on the dragon’s back, hair whipping in the wind, my black dress fluttering like a banner. My face stayed calm, but my eyes gleamed sharply.
"Fine," I muttered.
From beneath my sleeve, I summoned my old weapon a black chain. The chain writhed in the air like a living creature, responding to the emotion boiling inside me.
I coated it in my zombie virus. The dark liquid flowed over the metal like thick blood, cloaking it in a deathly aura.
"They started this," I whispered.
Then I swung the chain downward.
My first strike wasn’t a simple throw.
The chain dove like a heavenly serpent, spinning and crashing straight into the archers’ ranks. Two were hit instantly and like dominoes, their bodies twitched... then went still.
Dead?
No.
I watched them rise again.
Eyes blank, Skin turning gray. Movements jerky and unnatural.
Zombies.
My venom worked as always.
And within seconds, those near them were infected too. Screams began to rise from below. The human formation broke. Some tried to flee, but it was already too late.
From the sky, I watched as a small chaos spread like ink on white cloth.
Twelve targets. That’s all I aimed for.
But twelve was enough to ignite a small hell.
I reeled the chain back in and sat quietly in my saddle.
"That’s enough," I murmured. "Let’s move on."
My dragon flew away, leaving behind a battlefield unraveling due to their own mistake. I didn’t look back. I didn’t care how many survived, how many turned, or whether the vampires realized they’d just been aided by a flying undead.
I didn’t care.
They struck first.
The skies returned to silence after a few hours.
We passed over snowy mountains, and in the distance, I began to see the silhouette of my next destination: a massive gray tower, rising like a spear that pierced the heavens. At a glance it looked like ruins, but it was too intact. Too symmetrical.
That was the Tower of Echoes.
And who knew what awaited me inside.
But one thing was certain this tower was no ordinary place.
I took a deep breath. My hand rested on the hilt of my rapier. My eyes stared sharply ahead.
"Let’s hope this time... it brings me closer to returning home."
Before entering, I needed to check my status.
I opened the interface in my mind. A faint light flickered through the air, and then my data appeared:

I swept over the data quickly. Everything was stable. The two-level increase had made my body feel slightly lighter, sharper. I could feel it the world seemed slower, easier to read.
"Good," I murmured.
My eyes returned to the tower. There was no door at the base, only a single stone staircase spiraling upward. The tower seemed to be inviting me or challenging me.
Then, I summoned my werewolves, dark elf, and drake from my inventory. They emerged in flashes of black light, standing silently by my side.
Together, we stepped into the Tower of Echoes.
