Chapter 81: What Is It That You Want?

"Excuse me...?" Anna’s eyes widened, her lips parting in a slight tremble. A flicker of fear passed over her face, and in an instant, it felt as though all the alcohol had drained from her system—sobriety hitting her like a slap, courtesy of Sebastian’s chilling tone.

Sebastian let out a soft chuckle, dragging his fingers through his thick black hair with deliberate ease. "It’s strange... the more I look at you, the more I listen to you... the more familiar you seem. As if we’ve met before."

A fresh wave of dread swept over Anna. This was the second time he had said something unsettlingly perceptive, and it was starting to rattle her more than she cared to admit.

"I don’t understand," she said cautiously, choosing her words with care. Her eyes fought to hold his gaze, though it felt like staring into a storm. "Have we really met before?"

"I wonder," he replied with a nonchalant shrug. "Then again, I meet so many people—it’s entirely possible I’m mistaken."

That’s right, Anna told herself, shifting uneasily in her seat. There’s no way he knows who I really am. Even when I was still close to Marienne, I only ever heard about him—we never actually met in person. So he must be bluffing... or confusing me with someone else.

Sebastian grinned again, the corners of his mouth curling up as he leaned slightly closer, the proximity making her nerves buzz. "But you still haven’t answered my question. What’s it like—being indebted to a man like him?"

"Indebted?" Anna blinked quickly, trying to appear confused, her voice dripping with mock innocence. "I’m not sure what you mean—"

Another chuckle, deeper this time. Sharper. There was an edge to it that sent a shiver down her spine. He clearly wasn’t buying her act.

"Some things in life can’t be helped, I get that," he murmured. "But does it really have to be him? Of all people... William Stark is a broken man, Miss Dumas."

Then, Sebastian leaned in, his face dangerously close to Anna’s, and with a swift motion, unbuckled her seatbelt. "What do you really know about that man? Have you ever wondered why he came back?"

"What...?" Anna’s body went rigid. The woody scent of his cologne—sharp and musky—wrapped around her, making it hard to breathe under the sudden proximity of his frame.

Of course she had wondered. She even thought she’d received a clear answer. So what exactly was this man insinuating?

"I thought so," Sebastian muttered, a scoff curling from his lips as he reached over and clicked the door open. "His return. Your appearance. All the incidents... what a curiously perfect coincidence. Well then, good night, Miss Dumas. I hope we meet again—soon."

Anna winced at the sight of his grin—too wide, too cunning. Everything about him made her skin crawl, and yet she managed to muster a stiff nod and a strained smile, her voice hushed with caution. "Yes... thank you for bringing me home."

"Home, yes," he chuckled softly. "But even a gilded cage is still a prison, wouldn’t you agree?"

That was it. This was insanity. What did he know? What was he seeing? A storm of questions surged inside her mind, but before she could even catch her breath, the passenger door flew open—and a strong hand yanked her violently out of the car.

"Will?!"

She nearly collapsed at his feet if it weren’t for the iron grip he had on her arm.

"What the hell is going on?" William snapped, his voice low and dangerous as his eyes darted from her to the car. "Why aren’t you with your driver?"

"I couldn’t get—my phone died, so I just—"

"Enough," William cut her off with a near-growl. "Let’s go."

"Oh my, how rude," Sebastian drawled, stepping out of the car with an exaggerated air of amusement. "Is it really necessary to manhandle your woman like that? Doesn’t seem like she’s enjoying this little show."

His gaze drifted down to Anna’s shoulder, lingering on William’s hand gripping her arm with such force it looked like it might leave a bruise. Then, with deliberate slowness, he returned his attention to William’s face, his grin spreading wider. "I didn’t bring her back here just to see her manhandle her like this."

"Mind your own business," William snapped, his dark eyes narrowing into slits.

Although Anna wasn’t in any real pain, she could understand why Sebastian might think otherwise. Gently, she placed her hand over William’s, coaxing his grip to loosen as she offered him a soft, calming smile. "Don’t be upset," she murmured, her voice soothing. "He just gave me a ride. That’s all. Nothing happened."

Sebastian’s gaze flicked to her, his eyes gleaming with mischief. "And what, exactly, do you think could have happened?" he said with mock innocence, his tone laced with challenge. Anna grimaced in irritation, done with his games.

"Thank you," she said firmly, "but it’s late. We should all just go home."

"Good night, then," Sebastian said with a smirk, slipping back into his car and driving off without another word.

William remained silent, his jaw clenched tight as he turned toward the mansion and stalked off, nearly dragging Anna behind him. She struggled to keep up with his long, furious strides, her heels clicking hastily against the stone path.

"Will, what’s wrong?" she asked gently, confused by the sudden storm brewing in his eyes. "Why are you so angry with me?"

He stopped abruptly and turned to face her. His gaze was sharp, glittering with an edge that sent a chill down her spine."Do I need to put a tracking tag on you? Or maybe assign people to follow you around?"

Anna’s eyes widened in disbelief. "What are you talking about?"

William groaned, the muscles in his jaw tightening as his expression flickered from frustration to something unreadable—then settled into a mask of cold indifference."Nothing. Go to your room."

"What...?" Her voice caught. The way he said it—stern, dismissive—cut deeper than she expected. Go to your room? Like she was a misbehaving child?

"I don’t understand," she tried again, her gaze locking onto his, searching for some trace of warmth. "Did something happen? I only accepted the ride because I wanted to find out more about his relationship with Marienne—"

"Just go," William snapped, his voice rising before he quickly reined it in. "It doesn’t matter."

Anna’s heart fluttered erratically in her chest before plummeting to the pit of her stomach. Was it jealousy? Or something deeper—something darker?

"Mr. Stark," she said softly, her tone shifting as her eyes dropped to the floor. The formality in her voice made him flinch."What is it that you want from me?"

He didn’t answer. A thousand responses flickered through his mind, but none seemed right. He had already told her what he wanted—or at least, he thought he had. But somehow, she still didn’t understand.Or maybe... he didn’t either.

"Never mind," she murmured, shaking her head and turning to walk away. "I got into another man’s car while I’m supposed to be pretending to date you. I understand why that would upset you. I won’t make that mistake again. I’m sorry."

And with that, she left, her footsteps growing fainter as she disappeared down the shadowy hallway.

William let out a long, weary sigh, burying his face in his hands. His fingers trembled slightly as he exhaled.

No. Neither of them understood it. Not really.
