Chapter 80: How Does It Feel?
Anna fidgeted with her phone, her gaze flitting anxiously around the quiet street. She had ordered a taxi nearly twenty minutes ago, but the app had suddenly refreshed and canceled her request without warning.
Daniel had left about an hour ago, long before she’d finished her drink, and just as she was about to call one of William’s drivers, her phone had gone dark—completely out of battery, cutting off her last option.
I guess I’ll have to hail a cab the old-fashioned way, she sighed inwardly, squinting into the night in search of a yellow cab sign. This is the last time I ever drink alone at a bar. I swear.
"Miss Dumas?"
Anna flinched at the sound of a man’s voice calling out her alias. She turned around abruptly, her heart skipping a beat.
A sleek car pulled up to the curb, and a tall man with neatly combed black hair stepped out. His smile was broad and unsettling, stretching across his face with practiced ease.
"Need a lift?"
Anna froze in place, her phone nearly slipping from her hand as her palms turned clammy.Sebastian Welling. What on earth was he doing here?
"You’re not saying anything," he added with a smirk, slapping a hand playfully on the roof of his car, as if to grab her attention even more. "Did I make you uncomfortable?"
Anna parted her lips, scrambling for a response as panic whisked through her thoughts. The last time she’d seen Sebastian had been at the vineyard—right after he helped bury Susanne’s body.
They had barely exchanged more than a few glances then, and even back in the Golden Room, he hadn’t seemed to recognize her while she was secretly listening to his conversation.
Now, he seemed far too familiar—showing up at just the right time and place with unsettling precision. The entire situation sent a ripple of unease down her spine.
"Not at all," Anna finally replied, forcing a pleasant smile as she approached the car with cautious steps. "Sebastian Welling, right?"
"Good memory," he said with a nod, his dark eyes scanning her face with a quiet, unyielding intensity. "I didn’t think you’d remember me—especially considering how we met."
A flicker of irritation crossed Anna’s face. Why do they always bring that up? It seemed the harder she tried to push that incident into the shadows of her memory, the more determined others were to drag it back into the light.
"I’m good with faces," she replied coolly, the corners of her lips stiffening into a polite smile. "Especially when it counts."
Sebastian scoffed lightly, scratching the bridge of his nose as he eyed her from beneath his thick black brows. "I’m flattered." Then, with a casual air, he rounded the car and opened the passenger-side door for her. "My offer still stands, Miss Dumas. Care for a ride? It’s rather dangerous to wander these streets alone."
Anna looked at the car’s interior, weighing her options. Nothing about the situation screamed immediate danger. And if anything, this might be her chance to learn more—about him, about his involvement with Marienne, and about the things that hadn’t quite added up lately.
The choice, really, was obvious.
"Yes, thank you," she said with a grateful smile on her face. "How very nice of you."

The car glided smoothly through the nighttime city, its interior wrapped in a pleasant warmth that gradually eased Anna’s tension. She allowed herself to relax—just a little, but enough to seem disarmed.
The low hum of the engine, paired with Sebastian’s effortless driving, had a lulling effect, and she found herself fighting hard to stay awake and alert.
He didn’t even ask for directions, she noted, glancing out the window at the passing blur of streetlights and buildings. But he knows exactly where he’s going.
"So," Sebastian’s velvety voice sliced through the quiet, "how’s life treating you here? I bet it’s nothing like Paris."He kept his gaze on the road, his tone casual but probing. "That... incident must have put a damper on your time in the city. I’ll admit, your willingness to cooperate surprised me. But I appreciated your help. Marienne could use more friends like you."
Anna flinched inwardly, though she forced herself to appear calm and unbothered. "Are you that kind of friend as well?" she asked, tilting her head ever so slightly, like a curious dog sizing up a stranger.
Sebastian let out a low chuckle. "I’m more than just a friend... You could say whatever ties me to Marienne can’t really be put into words. It’s a very special relationship."
The way he emphasized very sent a chill creeping down Anna’s spine. There was something unnerving about him—something dark that lingered beneath his charming exterior.
"You must know a thing or two about special relationships yourself," he added a beat later, his voice lowering slightly, now glaring with a subtle challenge. His eyes flicked to her through the rearview mirror. "After all, you’re dating William Stark, aren’t you?"
For a brief moment, Anna felt her blood turn to ice. Why did every word that left Sebastian’s mouth feel like a needle piercing straight into her chest?
What did he know about her relationship with William? How could he know anything at all?
Her mind swirled with questions, each one more unsettling than the last. As she silently unraveled the implications of his words, the car rolled to a smooth stop at the main gate of the Stark estate, snapping her out of her thoughts like a splash of cold water.
She stiffened in her seat, suddenly unsure of what to do now that she was about to leave him behind.
She opened her mouth, ready to offer some polite farewell and bring the strange encounter to an end—when she heard the distinct click of the doors locking.
Startled, she turned toward Sebastian, only to find that his expression had shifted completely. The fake warmth had vanished from his features, replaced by something darker—something colder. His gaze was sharp, fixed on her like a predator watching its prey.
"Tell me, Miss Dumas," he said slowly, his voice cold and deliberate, "how does it feel to be tied to a man like him?"
