Chapter 60: Silent Breakfast

Anna speared a strawberry from her fruit plate, her sharp blue eyes fixed on William’s calm expression as he took a slow sip of his coffee.

They had been sitting in silence ever since he had blurted out that ridiculous remark. I cannot believe I’m getting jealous over a dog. The words echoed in her mind, looping endlessly as she tried to make sense of everything that had happened back in the garden.

He marched toward me. Grabbed me. Kissed me out of nowhere. Then he said he was jealous. And now he invites me to breakfast and sits here like nothing ever happened?

What the hell is going on?

She had long accepted his unpredictability, his hot-blooded nature, but this? This was sheer madness.

Now, as she watched him through the quiet breakfast—his focus entirely on his plate, his attention fixed on his eggs rather than on her—frustration prickled at her skin.

Just as she parted her lips to demand an explanation, William set his coffee cup down on the table and spoke first, still not sparing her a glance.

"I’ll be busy working all day... again. If there’s anything you need, feel free to contact Violet or ask one of the maids to run an errand for you."

With that, he took a final sip of his coffee and rose from his chair, clearly ready to leave.

Anna, however, wasn’t ready to let him go so fast.

"I’ve been meaning to ask you something," she said coolly, her voice laced with suspicion as she narrowed her eyes at him. "What exactly is it that you do all day?"

William’s eyebrows lifted slightly in surprise as he settled back into his chair, his strong arms crossing over his chest. Silence stretched between them once again.

Anna swallowed, gathering her thoughts before pressing on. "I think that," she began carefully, though the weight of his cold stare made her voice falter for a split second, "since we share such a... well, peculiar relationship, I deserve to know more about you."

A slow smirk curled at William’s lips, though it didn’t feel entirely mocking. "There’s not much to tell," he said with a shrug. "Right now, my time is mostly spent meeting with people and managing the foundation. It’s a large-scale operation, and overseeing it requires constant involvement with different parties."

He paused, his sharp eyes gauging her reaction. Anna remained silent, but her gaze didn’t waver—still studying him, searching for something beneath his carefully measured words.

Relaxing slightly, William leaned back and continued. "I’m also handling a business acquisition project, which takes up a considerable amount of my time."

"Business acquisition?" Anna blinked, her brows drawing together in confusion. "Are you... buying a company?"

William gave a small nod. "You could put it that way."

Her lips parted as another thought struck her. "Does that mean you’re planning to stay here longer? Are you moving back permanently?"

"That depends," he answered, his tone carrying a hint of amusement. "After all, I’m just a bored man with too much time and money on his hands."

Anna stiffened, heat rising to her cheeks. Was that a coincidence, or had he overheard her conversation with Gabriel? The way he phrased it... It was exactly what he had said.

She bit her lip, unsure whether to feel embarrassed or challenged by his words.

A nervous shiver crept down Anna’s spine.

"Anyway," William said, flashing a broad, almost smug smile. He seemed pleased with the reaction he had coaxed from her with that little remark. "Everything is still in the boring stages, so don’t burden yourself with curiosity just yet."

His chair scraped against the floor as he stood once more––this time he was truly set on leaving. But before he did, he threw one last parting shot over his shoulder. "And don’t spend so much time around dogs... Have a good day."

Anna’s brows knit together. She blinked in confusion as she watched him stride out of the dining room, his long legs carrying him away without another glance.

"Dogs...?" she murmured under her breath. Then, realization struck her like a bolt of lightning. "Did he just call Gabriel a dog too?!"

But as much as that irritated her, it was the least of her concerns. William continued to be evasive, dodging her questions with practiced ease. And though their relationship—if it could even be called that—didn’t necessarily require trust, Anna found herself growing more and more curious about what had been keeping him so preoccupied.

I’m not being nosy, she tried to convince herself as she quietly slipped out of the dining room, moving with careful, measured steps. I’m just curious, that’s all. There’s no harm in wanting to know more about him... right?

Following him toward the entrance, she came to an abrupt stop and pressed herself against the cool marble wall, tucking herself behind one of the grand staircase columns. From her hiding place, she had a clear view of William and Daniel.

Daniel was already waiting, standing by the door with his usual composed demeanor. As William approached, the assistant stepped forward, draping a tailored suit jacket over his boss’s broad shoulders before handing him a tablet.

"You’re looking rather cheerful today, Mr. Stark," Daniel noted, casting his employer a curious glance as he pulled open the door. "Did something good happen?"

"Not exactly," William replied, his fingers idly scrolling through the newsfeed on his screen.

As he and Daniel began walking toward the car, Anna discreetly followed, slipping outside unnoticed. She moved with careful steps, crouching low behind a cluster of flower bushes.

"The lunch reservation with Mr. Walsh has been confirmed for 3 PM at the Golden Room," Daniel informed him in his usual efficient manner. "We can move it up slightly, given that your meeting with the event manager is set to end at two."

Anna’s ears perked up. The Golden Room... she made a mental note. I know where that is.

William gave a brief nod before sliding into the back seat of the sleek black car as Daniel continued outlining his schedule.

The vehicle rolled down the driveway, its tires gliding smoothly over the pavement. William, who had been staring absently at his phone, suddenly turned to look out the window. A slow, knowing smile curled on his lips.

"On second thought... Cancel the reservation at the Golden Room. Mr. Walsh is a lazy man—he’ll appreciate the convenience. Just book a table at the restaurant in his hotel instead."

Daniel nodded without hesitation, already reaching for his phone. "Understood, sir. I’ll make the necessary arrangements then."
