Chapter 59: Future Knockout Expert
Euri hadn’t ever considered whether he might be a little psychotic in tense situations. But now that he was more or less done with Kiffs, he had to take a step back and contemplate the possibility.
"Crime by passion, that’s it. Yep."
All four limbs of the man were broken beyond repair. The joints had been ground into a paste of meat and bones. Purple bruises covered the entirety of his throat, results of Euri’s ham-fisted attempts at temporarily ruining his voice.
Blood was trickling down from his nostrils, ears, and mouth, pooling under his body mixed with piss. The stench was quite unpleasant.
"We could have avoided much of this if you were honest with me from the start, Kiffs," he said, feeling a bit sympathetic all of a sudden. Kiffs gazed at him with nothing but abject terror in his eyes.
"Ah well, at least you’ll live through this. Your friends have seen ’your’ distress text. They’ll be here any moment and take you to a hospital. You’ll live to see tomorrow’s sun! Isn’t that much better an outcome? You’ve been thinking it’s over for you, but it’s not!"
A shadow of confusion and hope seeped back into the incapacitated man’s eyes. It was lovely to look at, knowing how the night would end. Euri found the naive resilience of the human spirit fascinating.
Nearly twenty minutes after the distress calls had been sent, two small groups of armed men met up underneath the old building. Euri’s enhanced vision made out no less than eight distinct silhouettes in the dark.
His second and third targets lived in houses that were impossible to infiltrate without being seen, unlike Kiffs’ location. Had Euri tried to meet them the same way, things would’ve gotten troublesome, not to mention the traces he’d be leaving that way.
So he had decided to use Kiffs’ comcell to call them over, knowing that they wouldn’t easily come alone at this time of the night.
As long as he let them think that they could bring in a few helpers to deal with the lone ’robber’ in Kiffs’ house, they’d rush over confidently.
Eight people, all armed... He couldn’t take them all head-on. Or could he?
Despite the temptations, Euri chose the safer path and slipped downstairs through a broken window on the second floor. Less than a minute later, he was behind the group of eight men, accompanying them in sneaking into the back of the building like he was a part of the team.
He could hear their hushed conversations, describing how they planned to deal with the ’robber’. A plan was finalized very quickly after several conflicting inputs.
"We will split into two groups. One will go rescue Kiffs upstairs, and the other group will scout every room downstairs one by one. If they don’t find him, they’ll guard the exits while the first group searches the second floor. We can’t let this motherfucker escape thinking our area is easy to rob! Otherwise everyone’s home here will fall under risk!"
It was a sound plan they all agreed to. Two groups were formed in a rush, and while they were calling out the names of the ones who’d go upstairs, Euri realized that both of his targets were in that group.
He couldn’t join them without raising suspicion, and hence chose to stand alongside the members of the second group.
"Bro, where is your weapon?" the guy beside him whispered, watching four of their fellow rescuers stealthily going up the stairs.
"I just finished up taking a shit and saw you all going out! I didn’t even know what was going on!" Euri replied.
"Dammit! Whose kid are you? Get outta here if you don’t know what to do!"
"I can at least scream and alert everybody if I see the robber, right?"
"...."
"Fitch, this isn’t the time to be arguing," another older man cut in.
"The more eyes we have, the better. Being armed won’t do anybody any good if the robber isn’t discovered. Let him tag along."
"Fine, but if he fumbles, I swear to God..." Fitch grumbled under his breath as their group began moving.
One after another, all the rooms downstairs were cleared. The only signs of life in there were roaches and frogs in leaky cracks of the walls. The previous occupants of these rooms hadn’t left much behind except worn-out rags and a moldy stench.
"Secure all the exits! The guy must be hiding upstairs! If they find him up there, he might jump directly to the street. So stay near the windows, everyone. You gotta shout louder than Sunny’s mum if that happens; wake up the whole neighborhood to get him!"
Some snickers were heard, all at the expense of whoever Sunny was. Under a rather relaxed atmosphere, their group separated and spread out across the bottom floor.
Euri had been awaiting this moment since the beginning. He followed the guy whose position would be the most isolated on this floor. Together, they entered a stuffy bedroom, and Euri shut the door behind him to mask any possible noise.
Turned out, the precaution wasn’t needed. Two consecutive double-fisted punches at the back of the head knocked him out cold. Euri couldn’t believe it!
"Am I too strong now, or are these guys just too weak?"
Taking the man’s crowbar, he moved on to the next target. The second guy was a lot more cautious. After Euri entered his room, he never took his gaze off him fully. Despite the pitch-black shroud to mask his appearance, something must have ticked off that guy’s instinct.
"Why the hell are you in my room? Go guard somewhere else!"
"...This floor has only four rooms with windows. All are taken. Besides, I’m a bit scared," Euri said sheepishly.
"Why the fuck did you follow us if you’re so scared? Fuck! Whose kid are you?"
The situation forced Euri to consider how he could use his enhanced body to improvise a perfect, silent execution. He didn’t have long to form a plan, seeing how suspicious this guy was getting.
"Well?" The guy asked again, his impatience now turning into aggression.
"Can’t you tell? Take a look at my face! Here!" Euri strode over slowly as if he wanted the streetlight coming through the window on his face. The casual laziness in his gait kept his target’s guard low.
The moment the light shone on his masked face, Euri’s wrist snapped forward like a coiled spring. The target’s attention was on discerning his features, and that split-second window of distraction was what Euri had been aiming for.
Every limb, every fibre of muscle, every section of his mind, and all of his motor nerves moved in an excited harmony to execute the planned sequence of moves at a speed beyond the reaction speed of the average human being.
The crowbar shot out of his grip and hit the man’s sternum far more accurately than any ordinary pair of eyes could have aimed for. Euri’s confidence in his enhanced physique swelled.
His next move was to leap across four meters, which he managed with the ease and silence of a cat. Now he was close enough to the wheezing man to plant his fist into his throat.
A pair of labor-hardened arms tried to put up an obstruction on the trajectory of his fist. But his punch blew a way through them without even losing half of its momentum!
"Hack-!" The man’s eyes nearly bulged out as his windpipe was blocked. Euri had chosen not to exert his full strength at the final moment, knowing that might destroy his trachea and cause death.
While he was trying to breathe, Euri picked up the fallen crowbar and swung it down on his head.
Watching the man spasm on the floor for a good few seconds before turning still, he felt guilty for the first time.
"My sincerest apologies if you die from this. Please know that I only meant to knock you guys out. Unfortunately, I am not very experienced in measuring how much force is required to cause unconsciousness without permanent brain damage. Hopefully, I’ll be better at it by the end of the night."
