Chapter 53: Who Planned This?

Chapter 53: Who Planned This?

On the back of his carrier eagle, Nadir Bloodfly was watching Peacock District’s hottest livestream this evening. His sweaty fingers gripped the edges of the miniscreen hard enough to turn the fingertips bloodless white.

The roaring wind in his ears couldn’t drown out the voice of the woman operating the livestream. He listened intently as she described the scene in front of her, facing a large group of students in a familiar-looking classroom.

Nadir had been in that room just a couple of hours ago, checking on the equipment setup. To deal with the greedy old toads in the company, he had left the school bare to the desperate claws of Helios Clan. And this was the result.

The female streamer wasn’t quite a professional reporter, judging by her mannerisms. But she was indeed a Rank-1 superhuman, and she took the lead in poking at the false foundation of his project.

Nadir watched her beat down a loyal, but foolish employee of the company. He could only growl in frustration as the woman let in more reporters into the classroom.

No matter how fast his eagle flew, he’d never make it in time to stop her from going through the false data, the inflated stats, and showing all her viewers the truth.

And indeed, the viewers were responding accordingly. Bullet comments were flooding one side of the screen.

[ Am I seeing this right, guys? 80 kids from a Waist Zone school with an average physique rating of 1.2? ]

[ I live across from this school. I see these kids every day. You can’t convince me that all of these are true data, hahaha! ]

[ I still can’t be sure if the claim is true or not. Because even a retard wouldn’t make up a lie that big. If you’re going to lie, at least make it believable! ]

[ Yeah, it doesn’t make sense statistically or logically. ]

[ I’ve been watching the stream since the start. None of those kids look like they’ve ever received a supplement in their lives. I have been in the supplement industry for so long that I can detect users in one look! ]

[ They don’t look like they’re training for that kind of Physique. Even elite superhumans have to train rigorously to maintain their rating. This is so suspicious! ]

[ I always had a feeling that this was a publicity stunt. Looks like it’s confirmed now! ]

An identical flow of comments filled the screen. Nadir was tempted to write one in his defense, but the endeavor felt like trying to redirect a storm with a paper fan.

He had worked so hard to erect a delicate balance inside the company. Yet the Helios Clan had used his own move against him, sending in their puppet reporters and ordering the principal to stand aside. They had even commissioned a superhuman reporter to lead the attack!

But as he watched with increasing nervousness, the smooth sailing investigation faced an unforeseen obstacle.

One of the students came forth and gave the others a stance to take. The defense was pretty much made of paper, but it would be enough to delay the disaster for now.

On the livestream, viewers’ opinion fell into a lopsided divide. A small minority took the side of the students. Most of them were probably trolls, but the divide was still visible.

The majority of the viewers were busy giving all sorts of long-winded counters, but the real-time events weren’t waiting for them. The boy had found an opening to latch on to, but where was he going with this logic? Nadir could not understand.

The boy approached one of the antagonizing reporters who was clearly in the know about the real scenario. Nadir was almost certain that a killing blow was about to land any moment now.

His prediction turned out to be correct and wrong at the same time! A blow did land, but it wasn’t one directed towards his project.

Rather, it was the boy named Euri who delivered it unto the narrative being framed by the reporters.

A moment later, Nadir’s confusion dispersed into the wind. It all made sense as he watched the unassuming young man pick up a desk like it weighed nothing, and scare the bravado out of the reporter under his foot with an unnatural calmness.

A physique rating of 1.22 points—this score, out of the 80 scores in that class, was the only correct one, it seemed!

He had it all planned, this guy. And his plan was much more solid than Nadir’s hasty countermeasures.

From the beginning, this boy had been in control of the exchange with the reporters. He took them where he wanted to, and made them fall into a trap nobody knowledgeable had been expecting.

Rather, the third party, bearing witness to the scheme play out, were the ones who ended up convinced. The viewers online didn’t know the truth of the matter. They only saw a claim be investigated, and the investigator be proven wrong instantly.

Added to the mix was the hint of a fantasy; the age-old theme of poor commoners overthrowing a mediocre fate! Not just one, but eighty of them, gathered behind the young man who dominated the focus of the livestream.

The flow of comments didn’t change, but a large volume of their content made a full turn.

[ Okay, I think I’ll eat my own words this time. That kid’s rating is definitely accurate. ]

[ Fuck, my eyes deceived me! I can’t see any signs of supplements on this kid either! How did he train? ]

[ You know what? I still feel like the ratings aren’t accurate. That kid can’t be rated 1.22. It has to be higher! ]

[ You guys are all retards. This kid is obviously a plant left for this exact purpose—to show off and defend the fake data ]

[ Upper floor commenter should write novels. Don’t do what you’re good at for free, bro. ]

"Nadir, are you watching this?" Eskandar roared from the back of his own eagle, disbelief and delight coloring his face in equal parts.

"A superhuman! There was a superhuman among those Tail Zone kids!" Boris sounded just as shocked. It was a rare sight to see the steadfast guy lose his calmness.

"You didn’t plan this, did you?" Ania asked in an unsure tone.

"I’m going to beat you up if that’s true, Nadir!" Merida yelled from the back of the group.

"You can’t expect us to be fully in sync with your plans when you hide so much from us!"

"I didn’t plan it, I swear!" Nadir admitted, finally able to exhale in relief after hours of panic.

"But somebody had to have planned something, right? How else can you explain why a seedling like this is hiding in this shitty school?"
