Chapter 47: Every Examinee Has A Right To Fail, Right?

At a certain well-guarded classroom in W-15 High School, the second phase of Red Sea Lab’s recruitment test was ongoing at full speed.

Nervous students were coming in through the door one by one, entering the giant spherical chamber set up in the middle of the room, and then-

"Aaaggh! Hahahaha! Ow! Aaaaahghhh! Whoooo!"

Screaming in horror, rolling in pain, yelling in shock, roaring in laughter—these four were the most prominent visuals inside the chamber. Each student went through all four stages far faster than any natural possibility.

Some students showed rarer responses like breaking down in tears, panicking at imaginary threats, and going into seizures. Some started punching and kicking empty air.

These activities were not drawn out. Each student was allotted three minutes to spend as a test subject under the sphere’s invisible field of influence. At the end of the timeframe, they reverted back to their calm selves, albeit a little dazed and confused about what was going on.

All reactions were being recorded on the screens adjacent to the spherical construct. Three employees in the red uniform of the Lab were supervising the data collection.

On a typical day, there would be little need to discuss the influx of data in a test like this. But today, all three employees huddled together in front of the largest screen, and spoke amongst themselves in hushed whispers.

"This makes no sense! The statistics don’t match!"

"How is everyone hitting the minimum bar in every category?"

"Not a single student has been left out! Nine out of nine passed!"

"Somebody’s definitely messing with the central system, right? There’s no way so many Tail Zone kids from one school are qualifying on the psychological pressure assessment!"

"But how do we report this? You heard Overseer Nadir. He doesn’t want to file a complaint with the headquarters. He even deleted the one I was about to send!"

"Overseer Nadir definitely has some disagreements with the top brass. Could this be a result of internal conflict in the company?"

"Most likely, yeah. And we’re just small fries. It’d be wise to not get into the muddy waters and risk getting fired."

"So what do you suggest we do? Lay back and let it happen?"

"Exactly. Kane just texted me. All five overseers have flown away in the direction of the headquarters. This mess will sort itself out once they get there. We just need to do what we’re supposed to do and keep it all under wraps."

Their argument eventually reached a conclusion that all three of them could agree upon. They simply watched in silence as the number of qualified students hit double digits, crossed 25, crossed 50, then 75, and finally, last in line, the 80th student walked into the spherical machine for his test.

"Mm, fear response, pass; profound dysphoria, pass; panic response, good; euphoria, good..." One of the workers trailed off, sounding tired.

"Why are we even testing for the rarer conditions? He’s already qualified. Just hit submit and close the table. We’re done for the day. Let’s wait for a signal from the headquarters now."

As the strikingly tall young boy walked out of the sphere’s influence field, all three of them couldn’t help but notice a sudden disparity between him and his 79 predecessors.

He did not really look dazed. His footing was stable, his gait and countenance far too normal for someone who has just been artificially pushed through various extremes of human emotions and instinctive responses. There were no tearstains in his eyes. No swear soaking the back of his shirt.

While they observed the boy from head to toe, the boy also looked back at them with the same suspicion in his eyes.

"Hey, is the test really done? I didn’t do anything!"

"How the fuck are we supposed to answer that..." One of the workers muttered before replying, "It doesn’t require you to do anything. Don’t worry, you passed with flying colors."

The other two workers had to suppress their derisive smiles. Only they understood the true meaning behind that praise.

Passing with flying colors? This boy was not the only one who had accomplished it. All 79 of his predecessors had done the same!

"Now go outside and wait for the next test announcement. Shoo!"

The news did not quite seem to elicit the response they were expecting. Why didn’t he look happy? In fact, he even seemed a shade angry.

"What the hell is that supposed to mean? What did this machine test? Someone outside told me it’s meant to target psychological faculties. I didn’t feel like I was being targeted at all!"

"You passed, kid! Why are you acting like we intentionally failed you? It’s all fair procedure! Do you need proof? We can show you the official register if you want."

The boy gnashed his teeth, looking utterly indignant.

"Fair procedure, my ass! In a fair test, I’d have equal chances of passing or failing, won’t I? At least the choice would be up to me! Why wasn’t I given the opportunity to decide how I should perform in the test?"

The trio of workers exchanges a series of befuddled looks among themselves.

What was this kid talking about?

What does he want?

Why is he demanding the opportunity to fail?

At this moment, one of the teachers in charge of the batch popped into the classroom, appearing almost just as confused as the three of them were.

"When did the test conclude? How come you guys published the results online without informing the school authority? This is a violation of our regulations!"

"...."

"...."

"...."

"...."

After a very lengthy pause, one of the workers carefully replied, "The test just ended. We haven’t even consolidated all the raw data yet. How the hell would we publish it online? Are you crazy?"

Brows furrowing, the teacher strode over to the other end of the classroom and slammed open one of the windows. Through the gap, the main entrance of the school campus could be seen.

And right now, this area looked packed with formally dressed people holding microphones and professional streaming cameras. A group of teachers, led by the principal himself, was facing them in an animated exchange.

"If you didn’t publish anything at all, then how did every news outlet in the Waist Zone of Peacock District get the intel an hour ago that a record-breaking discovery of potential has been unearthed from the graduating batch of this school?"
