I Became The Administrator of A Sacred Ground -
Chapter 44: Moving Speech
Chapter 44: Moving Speech
This was not the first time he had snooped on conversations among superhumans. But few would discuss such sensitive topics in public unless they were sure that nobody could hear them.
The height of the water tank gave the young superhumans this assurance of security, and Euri’s recently enhanced physique gave him the ability to hear what he needed to.
Yet even with his enhanced physique, the adrenaline in his blood refused to settle. His heart was beating like a drum.
Had he not just discovered a massive clue on how to reach Rank-1? It did make sense when he compared their words with the development of the beasts in his sacred ground!
All the beasts in the game were upgrading their special attributes by relying on the vitality gas. This was synonymous with improving one’s affinity towards certain abilities.
The Blizzard Porcupine, having reached the limits of Rank-0, needed to undergo a special procedure for a breakthrough. So what implications did that carry for a Rank-0 human whose affinity and physique had reached the limits as well?
These young elites were constantly, casually referring to crossing ranks at such a stage, which meant that if there really was a special procedure humans had to partake in to reach Rank-1, it couldn’t be something too complicated or tough to arrange; not for them, at least.
If it was possible to strain one’s ears until the eardrums popped, Euri would’ve caused two explosions by now. The entirety of his consciousness was hanging on to every thread of whispers coming from the top of the tank.
However, his luck seemed to have been wrung out. The route of their conversation quickly shifted away from the topic of breaking through.
The young man named Eskandar, who had claimed to have reached 1.5 points in terms of physique rating, began to complain.
"Man, we could be training right now. This whole day has been a waste of time. How come we have to run so many errands when our contracts with the company are supposed to be the most lenient category?"
Joining his voice, another girl added, "Yeah, I didn’t think the clan heads would give this much leeway to frame contracts to your big sis, Nadir. She sure is taking full advantage of the opportunity!"
"I don’t mind running errands since we’re getting paid," another girl said. "But why does it have to be so..."
"Beneath you?" supplied a voice that hadn’t spoken a single word until now.
The others immediately fell quiet. The silence almost became painfully oppressive before Nadir, whose older sister had been a significant part of their conversation till now, spoke up.
"She didn’t mean it like that, Boris. Don’t tease her. I know all of you dislike the fact that our company is sending us on odd jobs with no training benefits. But you’re not considering the bigger picture here."
"Oh? And what might that be?" The unfriendly voice retorted.
"What does it mean to reach Rank-1, Boris? That’s nothing if you have no backing. Beasts rely on brute strength. Beasts, we are not. Civilized power needs channels—institutions, allies, authority. That’s how you rise in this world.
"Our clan’s foothold in Peacock district is too weak. We’ve just gained stability with the expansion of Red Sea Labs and the other four nascent companies. Suppressing the Helios clan is not an easy task for my sister since the main branch of our clan refuses to help. And Helios Clan isn’t even the most influential party here!
"So she needs me to become one of her pillars of strength in Peacock District. But I, by myself, can’t do so much. That’s why I convinced her to invite all four of you under the most lenient contract conditions in the company policy. This is as much an opportunity for me as it is for you.
"Nowhere else will you find such convenience and luxury right at the beginning of your career. So stop complaining, get out of your comfort zones, and handle whatever task we get assigned to in a way that increases our imprint on the heart of this district.
"We have to become faces that every household knows, elites whose authority is never questioned, our influence infused in every breathing vein of this district.
"The day we can claim that this city belongs to Bloodfly Clan, you will realize how generous the main branch can be to its promising seedlings! Each of you could become a true aristocrat, if everything goes well. Don’t forget that!"
As dramatically motivating as his speech was meant to be, Euri’s focus was entirely wrapped up around the droplets of intel being leaked in every sentence.
His suspicions about the power play between Bloodfly Clan, Helios Clan, Principal Serique, and these scholarship programs weren’t off the mark! The larger picture was now more or less confirmed.
To conquer this territory, the Bloodfly Clan had only sent a handful of promising descendants, but even that was enough to suffocate the Helios Clan. Euri had no illusions—they had no chance of stopping the inevitable.
What remained to be seen now was how the Bloodfly Clan intended to treat its future subjects. As one such insignificant subject, this would be his only concern.
While he was rearranging the assumptions in his mind, Boris let out a deep laugh imbued with ridicule.
"Become a true aristocrat? Nadir, surely, you meant to say that each of us would become a vassal for your branch of the Bloodfly Clan! How could your elders bear to let us leave free after we consume years and years worth of resources to help you establish your might in this city? Would we not become valuable tools as well?"
"If you were so opposed to joining my family, you should’ve reconsidered signing such a contract with us, Boris," Nadir said in a sharp tone.
The attempt at keeping his words polite and neutral had disappeared, and Boris backed off quickly, acknowledging his lesser ground.
"Come on, I was kidding, brother. These talks about a distant, prosperous future tickled my funny bone a bit, hence the jokes. If the Bloodfly elders chose to impart to me an aristocratic title, I’d be honored."
Nadir was about to say something in reply, but his voice was cut off by a loud slam from a corner of the rooftop. Even Euri, unwilling to miss a beat, turned to look.
A couple of teachers, accompanied by a representative from the Red Sea Labs, had tumbled out of the staircase, clothes sweaty and faces somewhat pale.
"Where are they?" One of the teachers shouted at the crowd of students, ignoring the view of the giant eagles. It was clear that something big had happened.
Initially nonplussed, a collective of gasps rang out from them as the superhumans walked up to the edge of the water tank and jumped down onto the roof. One by one, all five of them made the four-meter jump seem as easy as breathing.
"What’s the matter? Where’s the final batch of students? I told you people that the introduction phase isn’t starting before everyone gathers here," said the youngest-looking one among the group, whose voice Euri recognized easily.
This was Nadir, the de facto team leader. Although all five of them wore the deep red uniform of Red Sea Labs, the clothes weren’t identical. On the back of Nadir’s suit, a seal of open wings set him apart from the rest.
"Sir! Something in the operational chamber needs your attention!" The Red Sea Labs representative rushed over close enough to whisper to him.
Euri, who was still glued to his spot by the tank’s wall, leaned forward with his head tilted. He knew by now that his ears could catch that.
"Sir, the evaluation system for the primary test has malfunctioned. The AI is grading everyone far below the passing requirements! It’s impossible to pick students for the next test now!"
