Chapter 99: One Chance

’What the hell!’ Varn wailed internally. ’Am I, Varn, really going to be the first Eleven-circle Necromancer in history to die... and that by nothing else but from falling and that too as a helpless sheep?! What a pathetic end for someone like me!’

"Even Old man turned into a sheep—have you ever seen one that fat? Look at him stumbling around like a sack of flour!"

"That fall—oh, it’s anything but graceful!"

"Honestly, I hope he splatters. Once he’s out of the way, the great me will finally be free!"

Undead Dragon, now a sheep skeleton, watched the distant falling speck and muttered one comment after another.

Sylphie, the Unicorn Leader, clearly didn’t like its chatter. A swift kick from her hoof shattered the skeleton.

After quickly pulling itself back together, Dragon scrambled a safe distance away. It couldn’t beat the Unicorn Leader now, not like this. Of course, it didn’t even think about actually escaping. It knew that if the Elf King truly wanted it dead, there was nowhere to run.

"Master!!"

A desperate cry came from the mountaintop.

Varn’s young female apprentice scrambled down the slope in a panic. Sadly, she wasn’t a powerful Saint, so she couldn’t fly.

The distance was just too great. By the time she got close enough to even think about catching him, Varn had already slammed into the unforgiving rock below with a sickening thump.

Splat! Blood went everywhere.

Varn, the fat sheep, had hit so hard he looked like a broken mess. He couldn’t get up, just lay there bleating weakly, blood foaming from his mouth.

"Master!"

The woman rushed to his side, cradling the grievously injured sheep, tears streaming down her face.

She wasn’t like a Dragon. Dragon had been secretly hoping Varn would die so it could be free. But for this woman, Varn wasn’t just her teacher; he had saved her life. Seeing him in this miserable state broke her heart.

"Baa... baa..." Varn’s bleats were faint. He tried to speak, but only the pathetic sound of a sheep came out.

The woman’s expression flickered. Yes, she was heartbroken, feeling like her world was collapsing.

But... why did a tiny, inappropriate urge to giggle bubble up inside her?

Thankfully, she managed to push it down immediately. If Varn wasn’t already dead from the fall, seeing her laugh might just finish the job out of pure anger and shame.

Just then, she looked up.

The handsome and regal Elf King approached, riding the snow-white Unicorn Leader. Behind him marched a troop of massive Golems and numerous Elves.

"You... stay back!" the woman cried out, terrified.

Renjiro gave her a passing glance. Even though she wore a dark robe and shadows clung to her face, he could see she was quite beautiful, though her skin was deathly pale.

Elaria murmured beside him, "Your Majesty, what should we do with them?"

Renjiro replied simply, "Kill them, of course. He’s a Eleventh-circle Necromancer. Even weakened like this, he’s too dangerous to leave alive."

The woman pleaded desperately, "Your Majesty, Elf King! I swear that my Master will never oppose you again!"

Renjiro gave a small, dismissive smile. "Your promises mean nothing."

Utter despair washed over the woman’s face.

Varn, meanwhile, was struggling feebly. Even if he had to die, he couldn’t die like this, a helpless, broken sheep! As a powerful Necromancer known across empires, the humiliation was unbearable!

But no matter how much he kicked his stubby legs, he couldn’t stand. The fall had clearly broken most of his bones. It was just too pathetic! If word of this got out, his old rivals would probably laugh themselves sick.

"Ahem, well, well, isn’t this the mighty master of mine?" Dragon trotted around the downed sheep, its bony jaws moving in what could only be mocking laughter. "Look at you now! This is truly hilarious, haha..."

Varn bleated furiously, fresh blood sputtering from his mouth. He trembled with rage, trapped in his sheep form. That blasted bone dragon, mocking him when he couldn’t even talk back!

Renjiro said calmly, "Convenient. All three of you are here. I’ll send you on your way together."

Hearing this, absolute hopelessness filled the eyes of Varn and his apprentice.

Dragon, however, remained oddly calm. It had expected this, was mentally prepared, and frankly, had lived long enough.

But just as Renjiro was about to act, a notification suddenly sounded in his mind.

[Alert! High-Priority Target Assessment]

[Subject One: Eleventh-Circle Necromancer, Classification: Peak Tier]

[Subject Two: Bone Dragon, Classification: Late Eleventh-Circle Entity]

[Assessment: Both entities possess significant arcane and martial capabilities. Immediate termination is not recommended, resource optimization protocols suggest alternative approaches.]

[System Advisory: Strategic Suggestion]

[Based on behavioral probability modeling, Subject Two (Bone Dragon) is projected to offer its Soul Origin voluntarily in exchange for survival. Subject One (Necromancer Varn) demonstrates a high likelihood of capitulation under duress, potentially offering service or information to preserve his existence.]

[Conclusion: Consider subjugation or negotiation protocols to maximize long-term gains.]

Renjiro paused. It was true. These two Eleventh-circle beings were incredibly strong. If not for his Dagger, Dragon alone could have potentially wiped out his entire elven force.

He quickly made up his mind.

Renjiro looked at the sheep skeleton that was Dragon. "Dragon, even though I don’t particularly care for undead... I’ll give you a chance to live."

Dragon, having existed for ages, instantly understood what Renjiro implied. Perhaps it imagined being burned to ash by elven fire again. ’That would definitely hurt!’

It lifted its skeletal sheep head, managing a bony grin. "Your Majesty! I’m willing to offer up my soul and pledge loyalty to you! Of course," it added, glancing at the furious, bleating sheep, "I won’t be difficult like Varn. I have more than enough respect for the great you!"

"BAAAA!!" Varn roared, practically vibrating with fury.

If he was in his human form he would have said aomething like this.

’Damn you, Dragon! How dare you betray me?! You are MY servant!’

Dragon completely ignored him. After all, it couldn’t understand Sheep.

Dragon completely ignored the furious bleating sheep. It couldn’t understand sheep-speak anyway.

Renjiro waved his right hand.

Instantly, Dragon’s skeletal form lifted into the air. At the same moment, Renjiro swung the Dagger again, and the Dragon transformed back into its true form, a massive bone dragon stretching dozens of meters long.

"ROOOOAR!!"

The Bone Dragon threw back its head and let out a long, satisfying roar.

"Ah, my own body feels much better!"
