Chapter 88: A Sword...

Suddenly, several people pushed forward, eager to grab the magic core.

"Hold on!" one of them yelled. "That magic core is worth a fortune! Millions in gold! How can your you just take it all? We want it!"

"We wants it too!" another shouted, rushing closer.

The leaders of other merchants guilds quickly joined in, adding to the commotion.

The first leader shot back, "You can fight over the box if you want, but the magic core belongs to me!"

The faces of the other merchant leaders immediately turned sour. Sure, the box might be valuable, but the real treasure everyone was eyeing was the glowing magic core inside.

"What’s that?!"

Suddenly, someone pointed towards the box, staring at the large sword inside. "Wait a second... I know that sword! Where have I seen it? It looks exactly like the Garrick Knight uses! The leader of the famous Mercenaries group!"

Instantly, all the noisy chatter died. The entire place fell completely silent.

When the name ’Garrick Knight’ echoed in the quiet...

For a long moment, you could hear a pin drop. Everyone’s expression became incredibly strained and strange.

Garrick wasn’t just some ordinary knight. He was a top-tier Tenth Circle Guardian Knight from the Temple of Light. More than that, he was a famous Dragon Slayer, covered in glory. The very greatsword he always carried had once sliced off the head of a terrifying fire dragon.

But now... that legendary sword was here. Being sold like common goods by the Elf King.

Everyone knew how much a sword meant to a knight. His horse came first, but right after were his armor and his blade. Many knights treasured their swords even more than their wives.

Finding another wife was easy for a powerful knight, but finding a sword that felt like a part of you? That was incredibly rare and difficult.

Knights never let their swords out of their sight. Even when sleeping, a knight kept his sword right beside him, ready to grab instantly.

And now, Garrick’s sword—the symbol of his greatest achievements—was sitting in that box. It meant he hadn’t just lost his weapon; he had almost certainly lost something far, far more precious.

That realization hit everyone hard.

Lord Alden, the head of the Mercenary Guild, the leader of the Mage Association, the delegates from all the big powers, even the arrogant nobles who usually looked down on everyone—all of them had grim looks on their faces. A few were visibly shaking, their knees feeling weak.

If a legendary Tenth Circle Guardian Knight like Garrick could fall in the Forest, what hope did any of them have?

"Garrick... he’s dead!" someone finally whispered, voicing the thought on everyone’s mind.

"His greatsword showing up here... it proves it! He’s really gone!"

"No wonder we haven’t heard anything from Garrick or his Mercenary group for the last two days."

"A knight of his power, a Dragon Slayer... he led his whole mercenary group into that forest... and none of them came back. Just left their bones scattered in there!"

Shocked whispers spread through the crowd like wildfire.

The leader of the Mage Association, an old man with white hair in fancy robes holding a jeweled staff, stepped forward. He looked at the greatsword in the box, his eyes filled with a mix of emotions. He let out a long sigh.

"’So, greed finally destroyed him,’ the old mage murmured sadly. ’That promising Dragon Slayer... A Guardian Knight who swore oaths in the Temple, promising to defend the light and fight evil... but even he couldn’t resist the poison of desire!’"

His voice dropped, and he turned, giving several nobles in the crowd a cold, hard look.

"These nobles," he went on, "they were also driven by greed. But unlike Garrick, they’re still alive, hiding safely in the shadows, plotting like rats. Just because they were born noble, they have fortunes most knights could only dream of."

"They flashed gold in front of him, tempted him! They’re the ones who personally pushed this Guardian Knight, a man with such a bright future, towards his doom."

Just then, one of the nobles who’d been glared at suddenly stood up straight. He pointed at Renjiro and demanded loudly, "Your Majesty! Sir Garrick was one of humanity’s greatest knights, a Guardian Knight of our Temple! Why do you have his sword?"

It was obviously a challenge. Everyone there knew Garrick had died trying to capture elves in the forest.

Renjiro simply asked, his voice calm, "And you are?"

The man puffed out his chest. "I am a noble of this city! A Viscount, with rich lands to my name!"

"Ah," Renjiro said, his tone clearly unimpressed. "Only a Viscount."

The Viscount’s face turned red with anger. "Elf King! How dare you insult human nobility? Don’t think being an Elf King gives you the right to look down on a Viscount! The elves’ time is over! Humans rule this land now!"

"Be quiet!" Lord Alden roared, stepping forward quickly. ’Is this fool trying to start a war between us and the elves?!’

The City Lord immediately turned to Renjiro, bowing his head slightly. "Your Majesty, please forgive his rude words! I promise you, he will be severely punished when we return."

Renjiro replied coolly, "Take him to the Temple. Let them deal with him. Handling disrespect and pride is exactly what those followers of God are good at."

As soon as Renjiro finished speaking, the mood in the area shifted dramatically. Everyone’s faces changed.

They watched as Renjiro casually waved his hand. Instantly, the small, glowing spirits floating high above raised their tiny staffs together.

Beams of sickly dark green light shot down, wrapping around the loud nobleman and the servants standing near him.

"What did you do to me?!" the nobleman screamed, pure terror in his voice. "I’m a noble of the human kingdom! A Viscount!"

Those were his last words. A horrifying scream ripped from his lungs as he crumpled to the ground.

Unbearable pain washed over him as the green energy, like a vicious acid, ate away at his body.

He thrashed wildly on the floor, screams tearing from his throat without stopping.
