I Became My Elf King Character In A Game-Like World -
Chapter 48: Last Stand
Chapter 48: Last Stand
A few kilometers away from the elven army, there was a large valley.
If Renjiro were here, he’d be shocked.
In the center of the valley, more than a hundred unicorns were gathered. A few were adults, but most were either old or young. They had come together at the call of a winged unicorn.
Every unicorn glowed with a pure, holy light.
This light shot from the horns on their heads into the sky, forming a holy shield that protected all the unicorns inside.
But outside the holy shield, a massive pack of Dark Wolves—thousands of them—surrounded them.
Under the roars of the Dark Wolf leader, the wolves Under him attacked the shield with magic. With each attack from the wolf clan, the shield trembled more and more.
The Dark Wolf Leader fixed its gaze on the unicorns within the sacred barrier and spoke in a deep, chilling voice:
"Stop struggling. Lower the barrier, and I will grant you a swift death!" The unicorns let out sorrowful cries as they looked at their wounded Unicorn Leader, who was gravely injured.
They had followed the whispers of the wind and traced the presence of the elves, leading them to this forest.
But instead of elves’ land, they found themselves ambushed by the Dark Wolves in the forest. Their young leader had fought to protect them, only to be severely wounded by the Dark Wolf Leader.
Standing atop a massive boulder, the Dark Wolf Leader loomed over them.
Its enormous body was covered in sleek, silky fur that shimmered like black satin. With its head held high and chest puffed out, it radiated an aura of supreme dominance.
"The elves of this forest can barely protect themselves. They won’t come to save you. Your resistance is meaningless!"
"Awooo!!" Thousands of dark wolves howled in unison, launching a relentless assault on the barrier that protects the unicorns.
On a hillside overlooking the valley, a group of human mercenaries lay hidden, watching the battle unfold.
"How can there be so many Dark Wolves? Even a strong Dark Wolf has appeared!"
"With this many wolves, there’s no way we can capture the unicorns ourselves."
"Should we retreat? The nobles are offering an unbelievable amount for a single unicorn. The ones here are worth at least a in millions!"
"Let’s wait a little longer and see how things turns out." Their eyes remained locked on the battlefield, waiting for the right moment to move or plan something for themselves.
....
Dark wolves unleashed countless blasts, which exploded against the barrier in rapid succession. The Dark Wolf Leader furious roars echoed as its minions attacked without rest.
The Unicorn Leader stood at the center of the barrier, its pristine white body and wings stained with blood making him looks gravely injured.
Though its wounds were grave and its figure looked pitiful, its eyes held no fear. It gazed northward, sensing a presence that called to it.
Deep in that distant forest, the elves exist even if they had limited numbers.
The Unicorn Leader had led its people across mountains and rivers, ignoring the dangers of the humans, all to reach this this forest where ekves lives. Yet, they had failed to enter the land of the elves.
As it looked around at its kin desperately maintaining the barrier, a deep sorrow filled its heart.
It raised its head and let out a mournful cry. The sorrowful wail pierced through the barrier, echoing far and wide.
On the boulder Dark Wolf Leader bared its fangs in a cruel grin and spoke once more with an arrogant tone:
"You Pathetic Unicorn Leader, the elves cannot hear your filthy cries. Even if they could, they wouldn’t have the numbers or courage to save you! This forest belongs to me!"
It leaped down from the boulder, its massive paws landing with a deep thud.
The surrounding wolves immediately lowered their heads, letting out submissive whimpers in reverence to their king.
The Dark Wolf Leader sneered.
"You’ve come too late! Even I, along with the Ogres of the mountains, would have bowed before the great Elves. But now? The don’t have the strength to survive even the everyday lives. The elves are on the brink of extinction. They can’t even save themselves, let alone you the pathetic you and your minions!"
Hearing these words, the Unicorn Leader and its kin let out sorrowful cries.
They had endured countless hardships. Followed the whispers of the wind and the voice of nature.
Chased the faint traces of the elves. They had finally arrived, only to discover that the once-mighty race had fallen into brink of extinction.
The Dark Wolf Leader sneered, "your resistance is meaningless. At most, all you’re doing is delaying the inevitable—I’ll still eat you in the end and make all of your minions my food."
But the Unicorn Leader refused to give up.
It poured every last drop of its magic into maintaining the barrier, clinging to one unshakable belief, the elves would never abandon their allies.
"ROAR!!"
With a furious howl, the Dark Wolf Leader lunged forward, joining the attack. Its power was monstrous—each strike sent tremors rippling through the barrier, threatening to shatter it.
....
On the Hillside
A group of human mercenaries huddled together, watching the unfolding battle.
"Looks like the unicorns won’t hold out much longer!"
"Should we step in? If the barrier falls, the unicorns are as good as dead!"
"Each unicorn is worth a many gold coins. Every one that dies is a massive loss!"
One of the mercenaries, a seasoned warrior, scoffed.
"The Dark Wolf Leader is a strong magic beast. Even our strongest fighters— a Circle 9 Mage and a Circle 9 Knight—aren’t a match for it. Not to mention, there are thousands of other wolves in that area. If we go down there, we’ll be the ones dying."
"Is there really no way?"
"None."
Someone else gritted their teeth. "That’s over a millions of gold coins down there! With that much, we could buy an entire city, not just some noble’s estate!"
Then, suddenly—
"Wait... do you hear that?" The mercenaries fell silent, their ears straining. Then, as if drawn by an invisible force, their gazes snapped toward the distant forest.
Through the dense trees, countless elegant, agile figures moved swiftly, their forms blending with the shadows as they raced toward the valley.
Their speed was incredible—so fast that they seemed like flickering illusions.
The mercenaries’ faces turned pale.
