Chapter 39: Showing Off?!

No. It was impossible. There was no way the elves could have obtained such information so quickly. This was a bluff. Yes. That had to be it. The elves were simply guessing, hoping to provoke a reaction.

Gorren shook his head and forced a chuckle.

"Your Majesty, this is nothing but a misunderstanding!" he declared. His voice was steady, but his hands were clenched into fists.

"There is no such plan. Your accusations have no evidence, and without proof, such claims cannot be taken seriously!"

"Our Ironcrest Trading Company is not like those greedy human nobles who exploit the world for their own gain."

Renjiro’s smirk deepened. "Evidence?" With a flick of his wrist, a legendary weapon materialized in his hand.

The instant the weapon appeared, the entire hall trembled with magical energy. A dagger he got from the system.

The moment it entered Renjiro’s grasp, the very laws of magic seemed to shift around him.

A chill ran down Gorren’s spine. His instincts screamed at him to run, but his body refused to move. Across from him, Theron reacted in reflex.

His knight’s instincts took over, and his grip on his greatsword tightened. But... Renjiro was faster. Much faster. The Dagger moved with a single, elegant slash, so quick that Theron never even had the chance to counter.

In the blink of an eye... The proud knight commander, the fearsome warrior who had led countless battles, vanished.

And in his place... A small, snow-white sheep stood on the grand hall’s stone floor.

Gorren and Lyra starred in absolute horror, their eyes wide and filled with disbelief.

"What... What kind of magic is this?!" Gorren gasped. His voice shook, his mind struggling to comprehend what had just happened.

"Is this the legendary Druid’s Transformation Spell?" Renjiro lowered his dagger, the faint gleam of amusement in his eyes. With a casual motion, he dismissed the Dagger, letting it vanish into the air.

Then, without bothering to acknowledge the panicked expressions of his guests, he turned toward Lorien.

"Send word to our soldiers," he commanded.

"Arrest every knight and mage belonging to the Ironcrest Merchant."

"If they resist...kill them."

"Understood, Your Majesty!" Lorien responded immediately, bowing her head before swiftly exiting the hall.

The moment she left, Gorren felt his blood run cold. His face turned ashen, all color draining from it. This was a disaster. He opened his mouth, desperately trying to salvage the situation.

"M-Most Esteemed Elf King" he stammered. "Please...please calm yourself! We are not your enemies!" Renjiro’s expression did not change.

His gaze remained steady, and his voice was as smooth as still water.

"Of course, we are not enemies." Gorren swallowed hard, his body still trembling. For a moment, hope flickered in his heart. But that hope was immediately crushed by Renjiro’s next words. "In fact, I am very grateful to the Ironcrest Merchant."

Gorren froze.

’What...?’

"Over the years, your Ironcreast Trading Company has provided my people with a great deal of fresh fruits and other necessities," Renjiro continued.

"Thanks to you, my people have never needed to worry about food." His tone was calm, almost gentle.

"Of course, you made enough profit to buy an entire human city in return... by exploiting over our small numbers and we living in seclusion in this forest... but such is the nature of trade, is it not?"

Gorren stood there, completely dumbfounded.

If he was grateful, then... Then why? Why is he demanding two million gold coins in compensation?

Why turn Theron into an animal? Why order the capture of their knights, mages and everyone with them? If this was his way of showing gratitude... Then what would he do if he was angry?

For the first time in his life, Gorren felt helpless and afraid. The kind that clawed into his bones and made his body tremble.

Yet, even with that fear choking him, he forced a smile. "You... You are a wise and merciful King, Your Majesty." He swore, by his faith in the Goddess of Magic, that these words did not come from his heart.

Renjiro simply ignored his flattery. "There is no need to be concerned," he said. "I have no intention of killing you." Gorren let out a small, shaky breath.

But then... Renjiro’s next words made his relief disappear instantly. "I do, however, intend to renegotiate our partnership."

Gorren immediately nodded. "O-Of course! Anything you desire, Your Majesty!"

Renjiro smiled. "In addition to our usual trade, our weapons, our mana cores, our gems and precious metals, I have one more product I would like to offer you."

Gorren hesitated. "...What product?"

Renjiro did not answer Gorren’s Question instantly. Instead, he simply tilted his head toward Elaria.

Understanding his silent command, Elaria bowed slightly before turning to leave the hall. Gorren watched her graceful figure disappear through the doors, his aged eyes narrowing slightly.

Now, the hall was nearly empty. The only ones left were him, Lyra, Renjiro, and the sheep that used to be Knight Theron.

More importantly... Renjiro was now alone. No elven guards. No Elaria. Just him, an unprotected Elf King, sitting right before them.

Gorren’s heart began to race. ’This... is a golden opportunity. If I can capture Elf King,’ Gorren thought, his fingers twitching in anticipation, ’I might be able to negotiate our safe departure from this cursed forest!’

A ninth-circle Mage against a seventh-circle young Elf King? With a surprise attack, he could absolutely pull it off. Of course he was young but in Elven terms only.

Victory was within reach... Or so he thought. Because at that moment, Renjiro turned to him.

His eyes carried a smirk that was not quite a smirk, a gaze that was both knowing and amused.

A chill ran down Gorren’s spine. Cold sweat beaded on his forehead as his confidence crumbled.

Renjiro’s calmness, his utter lack of concern, was terrifying. If the Elf king wasn’t worried about his own safety, it could only mean one thing.

He didn’t need protection. Gorren shuddered.

’No, forget it. If I even try, he’ll probably turn me into a sheep before I can cast a single spell enough to capture him or immobilise him.’

His gaze unintentionally drifted toward Theron, the mighty Knight, now a pathetic wool-covered creature standing awkwardly in the middle of the hall.
