Chapter 109: Upgrade?!
Chapter 109: Upgrade?!
"Your Majesty!" Varn called, turning to Renjiro with a triumphant grin. "The Dragon Ghost is caught. I have everything I need to become a Lich!"
Renjiro crossed his arms, his expression stern but curious. "I hope you didn’t waste that barrel of Life Water I gave you," he said. Though he’d used the precious liquid as bathwater, he still knew its value.
Varn chuckled, wiping sweat from his brow. "I’m only about fifty percent sure it’ll work, but I trust Master Hades will guide me. I believe I’ll succeed."
Renjiro nodded. "Good. Now go. And Varn—make sure no one knows my elves are tied to necromancers or the undead."
Varn bowed low, his tattered robes brushing the ground. "Your Majesty, I understand completely."
He and Nina climbed onto Bone Dragon’s back, Nina clutching Varn’s arm nervously. The Bone Dragon spread its bony wings, its skull turning toward Renjiro.
"Your Majesty," Bone Dragon rumbled, "wherever I am on this continent, I will always hear your call."
With a powerful flap, the dragon took off, its wings rattling as it soared into the night sky and vanished among the stars.
Renjiro watched them go, then looked down at the spot where they’d stood. The grass was black and withered, the soil cracked and rotting.
A foul stench hung in the air—death energy, seeping into the earth. His jaw tightened.
This was why elves despised the undead. Death magic was the opposite of life, poisoning the nature they cherished.
....
High above the clouds, Bone Dragon glided through the night, its bones creaking in the wind. Varn sat hunched on its back, clutching the storage ring with the bottled Dragon Ghost, a wide grin on his face. Nina clung to him, her eyes darting nervously at the dark sky.
Bone Dragon’s voice rumbled, low and thoughtful. "Varn, I could feel it. The Elf King... he doesn’t really like us."
Varn didn’t answer for a moment, as his mind elsewhere. His fingers traced the ring, his heart racing with excitement.
Varn paused, his hands stilling. He nodded slowly, his voice calm but heavy. "That’s just how it is. On this continent, nobody really cares for necromancers... or undead things like you."
Bone Dragon’s empty eye sockets flared with a faint glow, its tone confused. "But we’re his servants. We gave him our loyalty!"
Varn went quiet, his wrinkled face tightening. Then, a small smile crept across his lips. "Then we need to show His Majesty we’re worth keeping. If he ever decides we’re useless... he might destroy us for good."
The Bone Dragon’s glow flickered, alarmed. "Varn, don’t say that!" it protested. "You and I aren’t the same!"
Varn raised an eyebrow. "We’re both undead, bound to him."
"No, no, it’s different!" Bone Dragon insisted, its voice rising. "I’m a magnificent Bone Dragon! Practically immortal! You? If your Lich plan fails, you’ll just die and visit Hades. You’ll escape all this! I’ll be stuck here, scared out of my skull!"
Varn’s face soured, annoyed at the lack of support. "Don’t worry," he snapped. "I’ll make it work."
Bone Dragon’s jaws clacked, almost sheepish. "Oh, I hope so, Varn! From now on, I’ll pray to the Dragon God every day for you to succeed!"
Varn smirked, leaning back. "So now you see how important I am."
"Yes, Varn!" Bone Dragon said eagerly. "And... I heard liches are awfully ugly. With you in front, drawing all His Majesty’s attention, I’ll feel much safer."
Varn sputtered, his face twisting in frustration. "You—!" he growled, shaking his fist. "%¥#%#!"
....
Back on the mountain, Renjiro stood beneath the towering Eternal Tree, its jade glow bathing the lush forest in soft light. The air hummed with life, and the elves around him worked quietly, setting up camp. He closed his eyes, focusing on the system. "Let’s do this," he thought, and spent 100,000 gold coins.
A burst of light erupted from the Eternal Tree. Thousands of tiny glowing wisps—each a shimmering speck like a star—rose from its branches, filling the night sky. They floated and danced, their soft hum like a joyful song. The forest sparkled, transformed into a glowing wonderland.
Elaria stepped closer, her hair catching the light. Her eyes shone with awe. "Look at them all... they’re so beautiful!" she whispered, her voice full of wonder.
Renjiro watched the wisps, a genuine smile spreading across his face. "They really are," he said softly, his usual sharpness replaced by quiet admiration.
The wisps swirled in the air, glowing like tiny galaxies, their joyful hum filling the elves with warmth. Renjiro’s mind turned to the system again. "Can we summon more wisps?" he asked mentally.
The system’s voice answered clearly.
[As long as the user has gold, more wisps can be summoned. However, only 10,000 can mine efficiently here. This gold mine cannot support more.]
Renjiro nodded to himself. He remembered each wisp could gather 100 gold worth of resources daily. With 10,000 wisps, that meant one million gold every day.
The nearby gold mine held 15 million gold total—enough to be mined out in about 15 days. His quest to "Establish the Elven Territory" had over twenty days left, so the timing was perfect.
His thoughts shifted to his second quest: upgrading the Eternal Tree to a True Eternal Tree. It required five million gold and had to be done within a month. "System," he thought, "five million gold just to upgrade the Eternal Tree? Isn’t that a bit steep?"
[The current Eternal Tree is as strong as a peak Tenth-circle Treant, A True Eternal Tree has power equal to a peak Eleventh-circle entity.]
Renjiro’s eyes widened, impressed but still unsure. Then the system continued.
[Upon evolution, the True Eternal Tree gains a Teleportation ability.]
"Teleportation?" Renjiro asked aloud, his voice low so no one heard.
[It can instantly transport nearby allied units to any other Eternal Tree or True Eternal Tree on the same planet. Range is unlimited. It can also communicate mentally with other Trees of Life across great distances.]
Renjiro’s heart raced. Teleportation meant he could move his army anywhere in an instant. If orcs attacked, he could send his entire force straight into their camp.
With enough Trees of Ancients across his lands, his elves would be unstoppable, able to strike or defend from anywhere.
"If I upgrade all the Eternal Trees..." he thought, a grin spreading, "my kingdom would be nearly impossible to conquer."
He looked up at the wisps, still dancing in the sky, and felt a surge of certainty. The gold mine, the wisps, the True Eternal Tree—it was all coming together.
His mind buzzed with possibilities, his eyes glinting with ambition. He imagined planting an Eternal Tree right at the gates of Mountain, the towering orc city.
In the future, we could grow one near their gates, he thought, a grin spreading across his face. Then I could teleport armies from everywhere—right to their doorstep!
The idea of sending thousands of elves and treants into enemy territory in an instant made his heart race. No wall could stop that kind of power. He turned his focus inward, his voice sharp in his mind. "By the way, System, can the True Eternal Trees be upgraded further?"
The system’s voice answered smoothly. [A True Eternal Trees can be upgraded to a Tree of Eternity for 100 million gold coins. A Tree of Eternity has combat power equal to a peak Demigod.]
Renjiro’s breath caught. "Peak... Demigod!" he whispered, his voice barely audible. The words hit him like a thunderbolt.
Demigods were legends on the Continent, beings so strong they were just one step below True Gods. He leaned against the Eternal Tree, his mind spinning.
True Gods lived in divine realms, far from the mortal world. If they could come down freely, he thought, this continent would be a warzone of gods, torn apart by their power. A Tree of Eternity, with Demigod strength, could change everything.
Shaking off the awe, Renjiro stepped away from the Eternal Tree, his boots sinking into the soft grass. He scanned the clearing, picking a spot for new buildings.
With a thought, he opened the system interface and selected two structures: a Battleborn Tree and an Elder Tree of Wisdom.
No gold was needed—the system let him build them for free. He skipped the Hunter Hall and Hero Altar, knowing each unique building could only be made once.
The ground rumbled softly. Two massive trees, each a hundred meters tall, sprouted from the earth.
The Battleborn Tree had thick, gnarled branches that looked ready for war, while the Elder Tree of Wisdom shimmered with silver leaves, its trunk carved with ancient runes.
Their roots twisted deep into the soil, claiming the land.
A sharp chime rang in Renjiro’s mind.
[Ding!]
[Congratulations! You have defeated the kobold tribe and the Dragon Ghost, securing ownership of the gold mine. You have also constructed an Eternal Tree, Battleborn Tree, and Elder Tree of Wisdom. This site is now officially your second territory.]
Another chime sounded.
[Ding!]
[Congratulations! You have completed a hidden objective and unlocked the Elven unit: Ancient Treant.]
[User, continue your conquest of the Continent!]
Renjiro froze, his eyes wide. The quest had been to wipe out the kobolds, take the mine, and build a second Eternal Tree.
He’d thought the kobolds were the only challenge.
