Chapter 982: Chapter 979: Outsider at the Door

"Furthermore, Marshal, this person’s death is the same as Meng Huxiu’s half a month ago. He also died suddenly, and the cause of death is very puzzling."

"Meng Huxiu?" Tang Ye questioned as he looked at Old Cheng’s face, memories swirling in his mind, and finally locked onto an image. Just before he had entered the elevator, among the four soldiers guarding the door, one had been him.

"Marshal Meng Huxiu, you might not recognize him. He was a logistics soldier of the First Army Corps. Half a month ago, he was on duty at the zombie-defense wall in Zone B, and after his shift ended, someone found his body, with no apparent disease or chronic toxin that could suspect a slow death; he died suddenly."

"So this is the second case."

"Yes."

"Fine, since you can’t figure out anything, go take a look at what that eye has seen," Tang Ye’s gaze suddenly moved to the nearby security camera, speaking indifferently.

Under Tang Ye’s command, a group of soldiers and medical staff, led by the security room staff, walked into the Security Room. The large monitor was turned on. Following the time frame provided by Old White, the staff swiftly retrieved the footage from the camera outside the restroom to the moment just as Old Cheng had entered.

According to Old White, Old Cheng had said he needed to use the restroom and walked quite fast, probably in a hurry. Indeed, in the surveillance, Old Cheng moved quickly, likely feeling urgent, but strangely, upon reaching the restroom, instead of going in, he stopped at the entrance. Did that look like someone in a hurry?

He looked around as if waiting for something. Tang Ye’s brows furrowed slightly until at 6:25:44 AM, four or five staff members appeared laughing and chatting as they approached the restroom, with one of them greeting Old Cheng friendly.

From the movements, these staff members seemed to have only a nodding acquaintance with Old Cheng, not much of a deep friendship, just a casual greeting upon sighting him.

The surveillance showed that Old Cheng responded, moving his lips as if explaining he was waiting for someone. However, soon after these staff members entered the restroom, Old Cheng followed. About two minutes later, the staff members started to leave the restroom, yet Old Cheng never came out.

At this point, Tang Ye’s frown deepened.

"Something’s fishy," he thought to himself, but he wasn’t sure; he suspected something infiltrated the Central United District, yet the surveillance showed nothing, and over the next half-hour, various people entered and exited the restroom.

Xu Haishui approached Tang Ye and exchanged a few words. He then rewound the footage to the segment where the workers appeared, pointing at them and said to Tang Ye, "President, should we check these people out?"

Tang Ye squinted his eyes and shook his head, responding, "No need." Then he looked to others and said, "If similar incidents occur in the future, report to me immediately."

"Yes!"

With everyone nodding, Tang Ye turned and entered the elevator to leave the first floor. The elevator moved quickly and soon ascended to the top floor. The elevator doors pinged open, and Tang Ye saw the increasingly sparse white clouds overhead, sunlight streaming through gaps in the clouds, illuminating the distant Green Mountain and the ruined city, displaying the urban prosperity as if it were from a beautifully drawn anime.

If it weren’t for the fact that the city in the distance had been plagued by ferocious, bloodthirsty zombies and the lovely Green Mountain also harbored countless dangers, then it might have been a fine piece of art, but it was still the apocalypse.

Those beautiful places were like the patterns on a venomous snake, deadly beautiful.

Before Tang Ye was a garden of colorful blooming flowers, a breeze blowing through the unpartitioned areas, the flowers and lush grass dancing with the wind. Above the garden, a transparent dome protecting them from being buried by heavy snow and destroyed by strong winds was covered with dew, occasionally sliding down leaving a streak of watermark.

Passing through the garden, Tang Ye entered his rest room. Above the top floor was his private space. Initially, he viewed the outside through the window, intending to finish a document he was working on, but within minutes, Tang Ye grew weary of the mentally taxing act.

Perhaps this was a task better left to Xu Haishui, he thought silently mourning for the increased workload Xu Haishui was about to endure. Tang Ye picked up an information file, all contents were about the achievements of the United District’s Southern Expedition Army at Jiuge, a week before Tang Ye had also asked Ah Fu, who ordinarily only does one thing and never a second.

The initial goal of the Southern Expedition Army was just to resist Jiuge, but now it had escalated to attacking their stronghold.

When Tang Ye asked Ah Fu when it would end, the response was "soon", though since Tang Ye and Ah Fu were far apart, the brainwave transmissions he sent required time to be received, a brainwave message from Tang Ye could also take two or three minutes before Ah Fu could receive it.

The reply he received was filled with excitement, obviously, this excitement was not because of Tang Ye; it was definitely some good fortune Ah Fu had encountered at Jiuge, thus what started as defense turned into slaughter, absorbing the vitality from living beings, a basic instinct of every zombie.

The information file also included the Peace Party’s propaganda department’s glorification of the war, portraying the Peace Party as standing on the side of justice, an indispensable strategy.

As Tang Ye delved deeper, his mood seemed to settle a bit, and as time pretending to be human increased, Tang Ye could distinctly feel the humanity within his soul being engulfed by his zombie identity growing stronger, and when one focuses on something, a book, a movie, or comics, his mood gradually calms.

And so it was with Tang Ye.

However, after a while, his ears picked up the "ping" sound of the elevator door opening outside; someone was coming in. Tang Ye’s rest room had strong soundproofing to ensure maximum quiet, but even so, his sensitive zombie ears caught any slight sounds.

With the elevator door opening, Tang Ye also heard very faint footsteps outside. Listening to the rhythm, the newcomer probably took small, but not overly cautious steps, likely a woman, either a frequent visitor or someone acquainted with him.
