Chapter 981: Chapter 978: The Sudden Death of Old Cheng
After waiting for a full half-hour, the tall soldier called Old White felt his need to urinate growing more and more urgent, periodically glancing in the direction of the restroom, but never seeing the figure of that soldier.
"F*ck, did he fall into a pit? Why isn’t he coming out!"
He couldn’t help but blurt out, while also trying to maintain his composure. But is it normal for anyone to take a half-hour trip to the restroom?
The only possibilities were either falling into the pit or going AWOL, with the former being simply because he was annoyed—any sane person wouldn’t fall into a pit, and even if one did, there’s no need to go AWOL, right? Even if ashamed, one should at least say something; the consequences of going AWOL are severe.
At the Peace Party, everyone knows the consequences of going AWOL. While it might not be a death sentence, the state of constant physical exhaustion and the perception of time slowing down is something that even the augmented humans at the Peace Party Building can hardly withstand for long.
If you need to leave during your duty period, all you have to do is report it, and it’s not that difficult; generally, you’ll be allowed to leave. So, as long as one is not a fool, no one would do something so stupid.
Of course, unless there’s something unspeakable but very urgent to attend to.
After waiting a few more minutes, Old White, whose bladder had begun to swell and now felt like exploding, could wait no longer. He just wanted to dash to the restroom for a rapid relief. To even think about it felt exhilarating, but the soldier who had gone to the restroom was still nowhere to be seen.
"Damn it, I can’t wait any longer."
Feeling he had reached his limit, he awkwardly twisted his body towards the two soldiers outside the door.
"Hey, brother."
These two soldiers were not from his area, so Old White did not know them and had to address them as "brother" to be friendly.
"What’s up?"
The two soldiers guarding the door outside turned their heads when they heard him.
"Can you guys keep an eye out for me? I need to use the restroom."
"The previous guy hasn’t come back yet?"
"Yeah, I’ve been waiting for ages, and now I’m in a rush too. Can’t wait any longer."
"Okay, okay, go on then. We’ll watch this post for you. And while you’re there, check on the situation with the guy who went just now; he hasn’t come back for a long time."
"Alright, alright, thanks a bunch, pal!"
"No problem, off you go."
Old White nodded, quickly paced towards the restroom like a whirlwind, and soon reached it. Entering, it wasn’t long before a stream hit the porcelain with a "hiss." The amber urine flowed freely into the urinal, and his bladder felt relieved with the last drop, prompting Old White to shiver involuntarily.
After relieving himself, Old White was in no rush to leave. After arranging his clothes, he began to look around the restroom.
"Hey, Old Cheng, if you fell into a pit, get out of there!"
He shouted, but the restroom echoed emptily back to him. It seemed as though he was the only one there.
"Damn it, did you really go AWOL?" Old White found it hard to believe. In his opinion, Old Cheng was always very honest and likable, and thus had better connections than many others in their circle.
The thought of AWOL was something that would never occur to most people, and wouldn’t happen to anyone else.
"Old Cheng? Old Cheng! Get out here. Where did you go? I’ve been waiting so long for you. You couldn’t have really gone AWOL, could you?"
The more he thought about it, the more Old White was convinced that it was unlikely for Old Cheng to go AWOL rashly. The doors of the cubicles in the men’s restroom were all closed, and the light from the ceiling was bright. Yet, for some reason, it cast an eerie ambiance.
Soon, Old White knew why it felt eerie—he was a soldier who had come back from death’s doorstep countless times and was unusually sensitive to death. In the air, he thought he could smell the stench of death.
Walking to the first stall, casually pushing the door open, nobody was inside; the second was also empty. And so, going from one stall to the next, when he opened the door to the third from the last, a familiar figure appeared before him, giving Old White quite a shock!
Inside the third stall from the end, a person sat on the floor, showing no signs of having used the toilet. His clothes were still neat, and this person was none other than Old White’s colleague, Old Cheng, the soldier who had gone to the restroom half an hour before.
His eyes were wide open, showing no emotion and staring straight at the stall door. When Old White opened the door, his gaze met with the lifeless eyes.
"Old Cheng, are you alright? It’s not that you..." Having regained his senses, Old White began to speak but stopped mid-sentence when he realized something was off. There was no sign of life in Cheng’s eyes, no emotional fluctuation—they clearly belonged to a dead man!
"Old Cheng?" His voice tinged with uncertainty, he called out again, but Cheng remained unresponsive, like a robot that had been unplugged.
After a few seconds, Old White finally reached out to check for Cheng’s breath beneath his nose. It didn’t take long for him to confirm that Old Cheng was dead—died inexplicably!
He hurried out, and before long, a crowd of medical staff in white coats followed Old White in, pulling Old Cheng’s body from the stall. After checking him, one of them said with furrowed brows, "He’s dead; the cause is unknown. All his vital signs are normal."
"Strange, Bai Yuan, what could be the reason?"
"I don’t know either..." Old White was equally confused. How could someone fine yesterday suddenly die?
He recounted what had happened to the medical staff, but his story didn’t bring anyone closer to an answer. Instead, it made things more puzzling.
Due to the mysterious nature of the death, and since it occurred in the Peace Party Building—a place where many high-level members of the Peace Party were present—news of the event piqued their curiosity and skepticism. Shortly after, some big shots arrived at the scene, which also alerted Tang Ye.
"How did he die?" Tang Ye, who had just gone upstairs not long before, now reappeared on the first floor. He was still there, wondering who the deceased was, when someone led him to the entrance of the restroom where Old Cheng lay dead.
"Marshal, it’s this man. He died very suddenly. We’ve checked; there were no hidden injuries or toxins in his body that could have caused sudden death," said the medical staff guiding Tang Ye, pausing before gesturing to Cheng’s face, they continued, "His eyes are wide open, but everything else seems normal. It doesn’t look like he was scared to death by something; it’s as if he just stopped breathing while doing something."
