Chapter 963: Chapter 959 Unreasonable
However, without considering the hidden corners where bodies are out of sight, let’s talk about the corpses around Tang Ye. Excluding those killed by himself, the remaining zombies all share one trait, their heads are missing.
In the early Apocalypse, Tang Ye had taught Ah Fu to eat his own kind to stave off hunger. However, only the brain part of the body could provide Ah Fu and himself with the energy to remain active, because the brains contained the Evolution Crystal. Even if the brains of non-evolved zombies didn’t have an Evolution Crystal, they were still its precursors. Consuming them could, more or less, replenish some energy.
At that time, when Ah Fu preyed on his own kind, he only ate the brains, leaving many headless zombie corpses behind, which bore a striking resemblance to the current situation. The sight before Tang Ye could only mean one thing: before his arrival, the zombies here indeed had been devouring each other, the strong preying on the weak.
Tang Ye looked toward the surrounding Silver Armored zombies, his view filled with a vast expanse of silver. The Silver Armored zombies were assimilating other zombies at a geometric rate, growing exponentially. Now, the remaining non-assimilated zombies had dwindled to double digits, forming a small group struggling beneath the Building.
Among all the Silver Armored zombies present, only about 0.01 percent were unevolved and therefore unranked. Behind them, Level 3 zombies were the majority, with nearly forty individuals being Level 5 zombies. Zombies devouring each other could produce high-level evolution zombies on a large scale.
However, cannibalism among zombie kin would at most occur among high-level zombies, as these zombies had developed a moderate level of intelligence and understood that they could eat their own kind to maintain their functionality when hungry.
Even so, high-level zombies did not possess the kind of thoughts that people would imagine. Their intelligence differed greatly from human expectations. Aside from those that had intelligence to begin with, the rest, which gradually increased their intelligence through evolution, lacked too many aspects of human wisdom, such as their worldview and perception of certain matters.
Cannibalism among high-level zombie kin, barring a misunderstanding or extreme hunger, did not involve the concept of benefit in their cognition. When they devoured their kin, all they thought was that eating them would relieve their hunger, never grasping the knowledge that devouring a powerful kin could lead to evolution.
Hence, when zombies devoured each other, it was mostly high-level zombies preying on lower levels, and they rarely provoked those of the same level or those higher than themselves since they knew not to casually provoke a more powerful entity.
Within a swarm of zombies, the unevolved will always be the majority, and the number representing each rank of zombie decreases gradually as their rank increases.
In the City Center, for there to be more Level 3 evolution zombies than all the unranked, Level 1, and Level 2 zombies combined is highly abnormal. This could only be the result of the zombies engaging in mass cannibalism within their group.
However, in the absence of high-level zombies with intelligence on par with or exceeding that of humans to control them, how could a swarm of zombies engage in large-scale mutual cannibalism? To say that the swarm did this on their own, Tang Ye believed not even a ghost would believe that.
Zombies engaging in group cannibalism for no reason is like an ant colony voluntarily helping humans carry things. Without the interference of a highly intelligent being, ants wouldn’t be capable of doing things that only high-intelligence beings can understand.
"Then what’s the situation here?"
"That’s what I find strange too."
Tang Ye looked around in confusion, his hand slowly lifting. As he did this, the silver-armored zombies around him all quieted down. Only over a dozen unassimilated zombies were left trembling in the corner, unable to break through the impregnable wall of silver-armored zombies, and could only shrink back, their roars growing much weaker.
Soon, a large number of silver-armored zombies began to wriggle, moving their bodies to either side to make way. Before long, a wide passageway was cleared for Tang Ye. He stepped forward to the unassimilated zombies that were not converted into silver-armored zombies, reached out, and casually grabbed one unlucky soul.
With a thought, Tang Ye felt a certain thread within his mind quivering, and then it drilled out of his mind and entered the brain of the zombie in front of him.
The consciousness of the high-level zombie instantly took over its victim’s mind.
"Lift your hand," Tang Ye said loudly, ordering the zombie he was holding to perform the action he wanted. Strangely, the zombie just stared back at Tang Ye with its fierce face, making a hoarse "heh heh heh" roar, not heeding Tang Ye’s control at all.
At this moment, Tang Ye’s brow furrowed into a "Chuan" character shape; his mental thread had clearly entered its brain and taken over its consciousness, but his commands had no effect, almost as if it wasn’t under his control at all.
When he was at Level 6 or before that, there were some special types of zombies he couldn’t control, such as the Wicked Spirit zombie and the Skinless Night Demon. The reason Tang Ye couldn’t control them was that their brainwaves operated on a completely different frequency from his, so he couldn’t send his mental thread into the consciousness of these zombies. He didn’t know how to control the frequency of the brainwave emissions to synchronize with the special zombies similar to the Wicked Spirit zombie. It wasn’t until after Level 7 that Tang Ye mastered this ability and then could control the Wicked Spirit zombie.
But now, Tang Ye couldn’t control these ordinary zombies in front of him, not because he couldn’t synchronize with their brainwave frequency but because after synchronizing and attempting to control, his commands had no effect. It was as if the program he had set up on the computer wouldn’t work at all after launching, and he had no idea what the reason was.
This was undoubtedly very frustrating.
If one were to use a different analogy, it was like buying something from a store, assembling it at home, and then it doesn’t work at all when turned on. Not knowing where to even begin troubleshooting was an absolutely infuriating feeling.
Tang Ye looked up at the building above, which seemed as precarious as an old sword that has been used for a long time and could collapse at any moment. In the air around him, Tang Ye didn’t sense any consciousness waves from other high-level zombies, which meant that these zombies weren’t controlled by any high-level zombie collectives—they had formed independently!
But this seemed impossible to explain.
Tang Ye was silent, and at this time, Xu Haishui could no longer contain his impatience and called out softly, "President?"
He called out, but just then, Tang Ye suddenly turned his head sharply toward the corner not far away!
"Who is there!"
