Chapter 61: Chapter 58 The end of the world, so good_1
"Chen Nusheng, what are you doing, that’s your child! Let him go! Ahhh! You heartless brute, let him go!"
A roar!
In the middle of a wide street, a zombie in shabby work clothes lifted a little boy about five or six years old. A middle-aged woman stood next to the zombie, holding its hand tightly.
The zombie, called Chen Nusheng, stood there as if the woman’s shouts had recalled some of its consciousness. It hesitated, struggling to lay a bite on the young boy.
"Chen Nusheng! Nusheng! Wake up! It’s me, it’s me, your wife! This is Little Bo, Chen Little Bo, your son! Wake up!" The woman cried out joyfully, her tears flowing freely as Chen Nusheng seemed to awaken.
"Chen Nusheng, let go of Little Bo, let him go. You are going to hurt him, let him go now!"
Chen Nusheng really put down Little Bo. The woman became excited, hugging Chen Nusheng, saying happily, "Husband, have you woken up? That’s great, maybe you’re becoming human again, how wonderful... Ah, Chen Nusheng, you..."
The woman’s face froze mid-smile. Looking back, she saw Chen Nusheng’s teeth deep in her shoulder, ripping a chunk of flesh off.
She pushed Chen Nusheng away, took the little boy by the hand, and ran.
A roar!
Chen Nusheng roared in rage, chasing after the pair. Any semblance of consciousness was buried back under his single-minded desire to consume.
"Daddy, I want Daddy, Daddy hug~" Although the little boy was running hand in hand with the woman, he turned back towards Chen Nusheng, reaching out one little hand.
"Little Bo, run faster! Run faster, your dad has gone mad! He will eat you!" The woman spoke desperately, lifting up the little boy and continuing to run.
But how much stamina does a woman have? Especially when the zombie chasing them was once a strong man. It didn’t take long for the creature to close the distance by half.
Looking back at Chen Nusheng, the woman gritted her teeth. With resolute eyes, she put Little Bo down and said to him, "Little Bo, listen to mommy, run, okay?"
"No, I want Daddy!"
"You run, or mommy won’t speak to you!"
"I won’t!" Little Bo said stubbornly.
The woman’s eyes filled with desperation. She knew she couldn’t argue with her child any longer. She turned back and ran towards Chen Nusheng!
"Daddy!" Seeing his mother run towards Chen Nusheng, Little Bo called out happily.
Chen Nusheng was covered in blood, but Little Bo wasn’t scared. In his eyes, his father was an invincible giant.
With shaking steps, the woman moved towards him. She glanced back at her son, her heart filled with despair as he continued coming towards her. All she could do now was pray. Pray that, by sacrificing herself, she could provide Little Bo a slim chance of escape. Pray that Chen Nusheng would realize something wasn’t right after consuming her and run away!
A growl!
Chen Nusheng let out an excited howl. It showed the woman no mercy, biting down on her neck. Flesh and blood sprayed everywhere as a large chunk of her neck was ripped off.
Little Bo hesitated, not understanding why things were like this. Shrugging off the doubt, he continued to walk towards the creature that was once Chen Nusheng.
The woman had stopped breathing, but the Chen Nusheng monster carried on tearing at her body. Sensing Little Bo’s approach, it suddenly raised its head and fixed its bloody gaze upon the child.
A roar!
It got up and rushed towards Little Bo.
"Dad..." Little Bo started to say, but before he could finish, he was knocked to the ground by Chen Nusheng. The rest of his words were swallowed forever.
A cruel bite to his throat silenced Little Bo’s screams once and for all.
Not far away, on the top of a building, Ning Yu’er watched the whole scene, weeping. She kept glancing at Tang Ye next to her, hoping he would save the mother and son, but Tang Ye stood by unmoved till the end.
Tang Ye took her by the hand and led her away.
There were many survivors in the Apocalypse, and Tang Ye wanted to save some, but even if he saved one, two, three...or ten, could he save hundreds or thousands?
He wasn’t a savior, a superhero from the Marvel universe who was determined to fight evil and save people. Nor was he a noble-hearted, broad-minded statesman. He was just a zombie, a zombie with a human mind.
Ning Yu’er couldn’t bear the death of the mother and child, but for Tang Ye, it had become routine. He knew he shouldn’t be so cold, but since becoming a zombie, his mindset subtly changed.
Tang Ye had brought Ning Yu’er from Honglin High School to here. They had arrived at a strange area.
When Tang Ye had first turned, he had wondered near the city outskirts. Logically, there should have been more zombies near the city center, but now there were only a few scattered about. It was as if most of the undead had been drawn away by something mysterious.
All the way, Tang Ye remained vigilant, although he was more concerned about Ning Yu’er than himself.
"Little Mister~" Ning Yu’er suddenly stopped behind Tang Ye and spoke.
Tang Ye turned around in surprise, wondering what she wanted.
"Can we not go on? Can we go back to Honglin?" She asked softly, looking sadly at the South.
Her brow was furrowed with worry. The closer they got to the safe zone, the more conflicted and nervous she felt. She’d started caring for Tang Ye in the past half a month.
To Ning Yu’er, Tang Ye had become like family, giving her a sense of security like a father, yet also different.
Today, she had to leave him behind. Without her, where would Tang Ye go? What would he do? She was afraid that one day he would be eliminated by the army clearing up the zombies and she would never see him again.
The pair journeyed on. Time flew, and by mid-afternoon, they had climbed over building after building. Their journey staying steeply linear, they were making good progress towards Hongyi Street.
When they were about four to five kilometers from the safe zone, the number of zombies on the street gradually increased, building into an endless sea of undead.
The sight turned Ning Yu’er’s face pale, and Tang Ye couldn’t understand why the zombies had gathered in such numbers.
Tang Ye gently stroked her hair. Ning Yu’er felt the gesture, held Tang Ye tighter, and shuddered at the thought of the zombie horde below. Would she be torn to pieces if she fell? Trampled into nothing, or eaten to the bone?
Thinking about this, a chill ran down Ning Yu’er’s spine. She clung tighter to Tang Ye, who couldn’t help but squint, as though he was savoring the moment.
Being held like this by a beautiful woman. Before the Apocalypse, this was something he wouldn’t have experienced. Suddenly, a ridiculous thought came to his mind.
Thank God for the Apocalypse!
