Chapter 39: Candlelight in the Dark_1
Chapter 39: Chapter 39: Candlelight in the Dark_1
"Did a human do this?" A bespectacled boy hit the skull of this giant zombie with a bat in his hand!
"It must’ve been a human, right? It couldn’t have been zombie-on-zombie violence, could it?"
"Could anyone really be that strong?"
The blond boy paused. He wasn’t sure how this strength-evolved, hulking zombie died. This giant zombie had appeared a few days ago, and more than a dozen people with weapons had tried to fight it. They were all torn to pieces one by one. Now, it had died here.
"Was it really done by a human?" The girl muttered. An odd spark lit in her eyes, hinting at her excitement. If the person who killed this zombie was by her side, she’d feel secure and wouldn’t need to stick around these weaklings!
She shot a disgusted glance at the blond boy, who didn’t notice anything off and pulled her into his arms.
"Hey, look at you all dreamy-eyed. You must be longing for Chun , isn’t it? When we get home, I’ll satisfy you, Brother Peng. Heh, heh." He smiled lecherously at her.
The girl was helpless. Now, at the end of the world, she had to rely on this blonde boy Chu Yupeng for survival. She could only let him have his way with her.
"Just you wait, once I find that person, I, Huang Yidan, will make sure you pay a hefty price. Just you wait!" She vowed in her heart, gritting her teeth in determination.
The bespectacled boy, standing by the corpse of the giant zombie, kept scanning his surroundings. For some reason, he felt unsettled knowing that not a single zombie was around and this strength-evolved zombie corpse lying here. He had an eerie feeling of being watched by some malevolent presence from the shadows.
He firmly believed in one thing: The more seemingly safe places are often the most dangerous!
"Let’s head back now. We can’t stay here!"
"What’s up? Done searching? There’s not a single zombie here!" Chu Yupeng retorts.
"Don’t you find this place strange?"
When the boy with glasses said that, Chu Yupeng also felt it. Just a few days ago, they’d passed by here and seen so many zombies. Now, there wasn’t a single one left. Where did all the corpses go?
As this thought crossed his mind, he felt a chill run up his spine. He couldn’t wait to leave.
"Let’s go, let’s go!" Chu Yupeng motioned with his hand.
He then led the group back to their dwelling, even releasing his hand from Huang Yidan’s shoulder.
When they returned to the library and made their way to the second floor, they could see that the main entrance was blocked with numerous bookshelves. The only entry point was through a window at the back. But it wasn’t just Chu Yupeng and his five companions dwelling here; there were also a dozen more survivors. Most of them looked sickly pale, apparently without food for a long time.
As they moved about in the dark, a sudden scream echoed, followed by sounds of violent beating. The moment he entered Chu Yupeng started to kick and punch a frail looking person, spewing cruel words out of his mouth.
"You good-for-nothing! Want to eat without working? You really think I won’t throw you to the zombies? Fucking hell. Try asking me for food again! You are a waste! I would rather feed a dog than you! Tomorrow, get out there and bring back food. If you find none, don’t bother coming back!" Chu Yupeng cursed vehemently.
The boy with glasses, after eating a sausage, was immediately drawn to a light that shone outside the window!
"Huh? Brother Peng, come quickly!"
"What is it?"
"Come here, I’ve found something!"
"Alright, I’m coming!"
Chu Yupeng just walked away after knocking the frail person to the ground.
"What is it?"
"Look there! There’s a light. It’s a candle. It’s in the girls’ dormitory, right where the giant zombie died."
"Hey, Guo Fagou, go get the telescope. Quick!"
"Oh, where did you put it?"
"In the second drawer of the table near the entrance! Hurry!"
"Okay!"
The teen referred to as Guo Fagou fumbled around the table in the dark and found a heavy telescope wrapped in a cloth.
"Here!"
"Give it to me!" Chu Yupeng haphazardly grabbed it. He unwrapped the cloth to reveal a monocular telescope. He looked through it and could see two silhouettes, but they were quite blurry due to the distance. He could see a man and a woman sitting across from each other; he couldn’t make out their faces. The man was built like a tank and was wearing a trench coat. Even through the telescope, Chu Yupeng could sense his imposing stature.
The woman, on the other hand, appeared petite. In the candlelight, she looked exceptionally beautiful, making Chu Yupeng stare, his eyes filled with a depraved desire to possess her. Now that it was the end of the world, and without the constraints of the law, he could do as he pleased.
He moved the telescope slightly down and then he saw what was on the couple’s table. Various colorfully wrapped packets dazzled him, and Chu Yupeng felt saliva pooling in his mouth.
All that food? They only had a small packet of food left. But the couple in the girls’ dorm room had a big bag on their table. Greed glinted in his eyes. He wished he could take a dozen people right now and raid their stash. But it was night, and zombies were particularly fearsome in the darkness.
"Let me have a look!" the boy with glasses said from behind.
"Here, Mad... so much food they got there. We should go and raid them tomorrow!"
The bespectacled youngster didn’t respond. When he saw Tang Ye through the telescope, his pupils contracted.
"Do you think... the giant zombie was killed by that man?" he asked Chu Yupeng.
Chu Yupeng froze at his question.
"How is that possible, him? He sure looks strong, but to take on the giant zombie... Nah! Doesn’t matter if he can fight that monster or not, we’ll just raid their food tomorrow!" Saying this, he went downstairs.
The youngster with glasses shook his head, sneering at Chu Yupeng’s retreating figure. He silently cursed, "Barbarian!"
"Let me see too!" Huang Yidan said from behind him.
The boy with glasses handed over the telescope, smiling. Huang Yidan took the telescope and turned it to look at Tang Ye and Ning Yu’er.
"It’s..." she mumbled, stunned by Tang Ye’s imposing frame.
Is that Yao Ming?
"Can you see that man?" the boy with glasses asked.
"Yes."
"I suspect that giant zombie was killed by him."
"What!" Huang Yidan exclaimed, gazing at Tang Ye’s blurry figure with fervor.
"Wow, such a robust man!"
"Chu Yupeng, you’ll pay. I’ll have you torn to pieces!"
She then looked at Ning Yu’er, her eyes filled with intense jealousy. She turned to the boy with glasses and asked, "Are you certain?"
"Seventy percent sure! Considering his physique, it’s quite possible it was him. Also, about the food, we have to go there tomorrow!"
"Oh."
