Chapter 382: Chapter 379: The Principle of Getting Lost_1
Tang Ye’s eyes brightened, and he hurried forward, signaling Ah Fu not to follow. He then carefully examined the plant.
"Heh heh, we meet again."
Coming face to face with it, Tang Ye clearly saw its rhizomes gently vibrating, the soil around its roots loosening bit by bit. It was exactly like the one he’d encountered a few days ago, certainly of the same kind.
Tang Ye stretched out a tentacle, and the rhizome plant seemed to sense something. Its large mouth slightly opened and closed, giving Tang Ye a clear signal. This creature may have once been a Venus flytrap!
Tang Ye had spotted a number of Venus flytraps in this area, yet they were all passive. However, these red, evolved flytraps were definitely the aggressive kind!
That much was apparent from the pile of bones scattered on the ground. They belonged to all kinds of animals, and Tang Ye even spotted human bones among them.
It appeared to only target living beings. Given that he, an undead zombie, had no vital energy, it couldn’t sense him and therefore wouldn’t attack him out of boredom. Zombies, to these predators, were completely inedible.
Unless, of course, the zombies attacked the predators first or gave them reason to believe they were hostile.
That seemed to have been the case with this evolved Venus flytrap. The moment Tang Ye began to stretch out his tentacles, its mouth opened wide, ready to clamp down with a burst of speed!
But he moved even quicker. Before it could snap shut, Tang Ye raised his hand and grabbed the roots connecting to its head, locking them in place. Then he inserted his tentacles with a plop and began to absorb nutrients...
Well, he failed to do so.
Tang Ye felt both disappointment and excitement, a combination of conflicting emotions.
He was disappointed that he couldn’t use the Star Absorption Method on the evolved plant. His excitement, however, stemmed from his newfound certainty that the giant tree did indeed possess an Evolution Crystal Core!
As he secured the two heads of the evolved Venus flytrap with one hand, he gently applied pressure with the other, prying open its heads. Sure enough, embedded within was a green Evolution Crystal Core!
His assumption confirmed, Tang Ye immediately inserted the Evolution Crystal Core into his mouth.
Though he noticed that it was slightly different from the one he’d obtained from a similar Venus flytrap. The previous Crystal Core was Level 3, whereas this one was only Level 2.
A minor hiccup in his quest to find out if the giant tree possessed an Evolution Crystal Core or not.
He arrived at the hillside with features identical to those he’d seen before. The looming tree behind him was obscured by a fog that seemed to have sprung up from nowhere, while another huge tree appeared in the distance.
If he tried to head back through the fog, he’d still see that same gargantuan tree. If he went forward, he’d only find himself back where he started.
This phenomenon, which Tang Ye had experienced several times by now, remained a perplexing mystery. It was like continuously getting lost—a truly unique experience that one would not understand without having gone through it personally.
Standing at the top of the hillside, Tang Ye lost himself in deep thought.
"Perhaps...there’s another way?"
As if realizing there might be a new method he could try, a gleam appeared in his eyes. But it soon faded, replaced by resignation. He had tried every possible method, yet what if he failed again?
After another moment of silence, with Ah Fu sitting quietly by his side, they prepared for their next move. Ah Fu could somehow sense Tang Ye’s thoughts. It knew that it might have to get moving soon, so it didn’t stray.
After a couple of minutes, Tang Ye lifted his head, his eyes filled with determination.
"Forget it. Hasn’t mankind’s technological progress come from a succession of attempts and breakthroughs? Failures are bound to happen along the way!"
Encouraging himself internally, his slight irritation vanished. Tang Ye immediately commanded Ah Fu to backtrack while he continued forward.
He also directed Ah Fu to track his location once it had travelled a certain distance.
So it was that Tang Ye and Ah Fu parted ways. Tang Ye moved swiftly, stirring up a literal storm with his rapid pace. Speeding past the sound barrier, he broke the usual peace of the forest with a string of sonic boom, the trees around him toppling under the tremendous wind pressure his passage generated. He cut through them like a blade, leaving their severed trunks in his wake!
His figure turned into a black shadow, leaving a five- to six-meter-long afterimage as he moved.
Ah Fu, on the other hand, leaped like a green giant—each jump taking it over ten meters high and nearly a hundred meters forward!
Tang Ye had no idea how far he had travelled. Focusing his mind on Ah Fu’s current direction, he noted that Ah Fu was initially moving in the opposite direction. But as he breached a certain boundary—without taking much notice of it—Ah Fu seemed to have inexplicably passed through it as well.
When he next realized where Ah Fu was, he was shocked to find it at a considerable distance ahead of him!
"What’s going on here?"
Surprise painted his face. After concentrating for a while, he confirmed that Ah Fu was indeed ahead!
Half an hour later, the two zombies finally met up at the base of yet another enormous tree. Upon encountering Ah Fu, Tang Ye noted its dazed expression—as if just awakening from a deep sleep.
With a hunch taking shape within his mind, Tang Ye ordered Ah Fu to stay put, while he turned around and started walking back!
This time, he proceeded with extreme caution, counting in his head with each step. After a long while, he reached a certain spot, choosing not to linger as he took another stride forward.
The giant tree behind him was now partially obscured by a thin sheet of mist. Unfazed, Tang Ye stepped past it once more. The moment he reached the 85214th step, his thoughts suddenly became a jumbled mess, as if something was stirring them up.
Tang Ye’s gaze grew unfocused. Though his stride remained unbroken, he stopped counting. It wasn’t until later that he managed to shake off his trance-like state. However, not immediately realizing this, he continued onward.
Nearly a kilometer from the hillside, Tang Ye realized that he’d been counting his footsteps. At that moment, though, he felt completely clueless—as if he had never started counting in the first place. It was as though he had naturally ended up at that spot, entirely unaware of how he got there!
His reaction was significantly delayed, similar to a person hypnotized to forget certain things after crossing a specific boundary.
For instance, someone might have a dream while asleep and wake up realizing he’d dreamed, only to have the memory of the dream fade away bit by bit under the erosion of his waking senses, until he could no longer recall it beyond the fact that he indeed had a dream.
Everyone experiences this, but very few actually experience this conscious erosion of a dream’s memory.
Tang Ye had. He’d experienced it back when he was still human.
And now, it seemed, he was beginning to understand what was causing him to get lost in a loop.
